A wildfire in southwestern Massachusetts grew to 1,000 acres this week, the second fire in the region to reach that size this month. As droughts and heat intensify, the risk of wildfires like these becoming catastrophic is growing across the United States. But after generations of suppressing fire, many millions of acres of brush and tree fuels have built up, increasing the risk of large, dangerous wildfires. Prescribed-burn associations — neighbors helping neighbors burn — are addressing some of these issues by pooling community members’ resources, experience and time. In an era of greater wildfire risk driven by fuel accumulation and global warming, governments should be swiftly removing barriers to the use of prescribed fires on private land.

Of course, these basic rules of political decorum are ones Donald Trump has rarely followed. He’s been accumulating political capital, and his victory only gives him an opening to accumulate more ... if he chooses to. On some level, I accept the notion that one person’s revenge is another person’s “reform,” so I’m sure Trump could argue he’s appointing reformists. What will ultimately matter is whether these folks can govern like reformers or end up simply as conduits for Trump’s revenge. Two people were killed and a third was injured after a house in an Ohio village exploded and caught fire Tuesday morning, officials said. The home exploded at around 8:44 a.m. in Bethel, a village of around 2,600 southeast of Cincinnati, Bethel Fire Chief Christopher Cooper said at a news conference. “It was a large explosion that had sent debris across the neighborhood,” Cooper said, describing the scene as chaotic. A burning body was discovered in a driveway of a home in Northeast Philadelphia early Tuesday morning, as police describe the death as “suspicious.”The Philadelphia police and fire departments responded to a report of a fire in a driveway in the 8000 block of Leonard Street shortly after 3 a.m., and found a man “with severe burns laying in the driveway,” officials said in a news release. The man, whose age was not known, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:23 a.m.A gas can and struck matches were found near the body, police said. CNN —Travelers aboard a Southwest Airlines flight preparing to leave Denver Friday had to evacuate after a passenger’s cell phone battery caught on fire and caused an airplane seat to catch fire as well. The Boeing 737-700 was still parked at a gate with 108 passengers on board when the incident occurred at Denver International Airport, according to Southwest. Crew members were able to extinguish the seat fire, the statement said. “Southwest’s customer care team is working to accommodate the passengers on another aircraft to their original destination of Houston,” an airline spokesperson said. The incident remains under investigation.”The flight arrived three hours later to its destination at William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, according to data from FlightAware.
