CNN —Rien Schuurhuis never expected to win this year’s cycling world championships, nor come close to claiming the race’s distinctive rainbow jersey. For the sole representative of the Vatican City in the 200-strong field, simply being at the race in Switzerland was enough. “There was one hill in the (2022) world championships and everyone was yelling: ‘The Pope’s cyclist! At every race, Schuurhuis’ ultimate aim has been to get people talking about the team and what it represents. Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff, is a soccer fan who played as a goalkeeper and supported San Lorenzo while growing up in Argentina.

Brisbane, Australia CNN —The Australian government is threatening multimillion dollar fines for social media companies that breach a proposed ban on children under 16 from using their service. “The legislation places the onus on social media platforms, not parents or children, to ensure protections are in place,” Rowland said. Many parents and pro-ban campaigners have lauded the bill as a long overdue measure to impose accountability on tech companies for tools Australian children use online. Both sides agree about the risks of children spending too much time online, and the need for tech companies to do more to safeguard their products. The Australia government’s also commissioned the UK consortium Age Check Certification Scheme to trial age verification technology, to aid efforts to keep children off social media platforms.

An engine failure forced pilots on a Quantas flight to make an emergency landing shortly after it took from an airport in Sydney, Australia. Passengers heard a loud bang shortly after flight 520 from Sydney to Brisbane left the runway on Friday afternoon, the airline said in a statement, adding that it was not an explosion. Engineers concluded after a preliminary inspection and confirmed the Boeing 737 jet suffered a contained engine failure, the statement added. “After circling for a short period of time, the aircraft landed safely at Sydney Airport,” Qantas’ chief pilot, Capt. The plane “was banking a lot” as it turned to prepare for its eventual descent back into Sydney, Willacy said.

Sydney Reuters —A Qantas Airways plane bound for Brisbane suffered an engine failure after takeoff on Friday and circled for a short period of time before returning safely to Sydney Airport, the Australian airline said. The airline said its engineers had conducted a preliminary inspection of the engine and confirmed it was a contained engine failure, meaning the internal engine parts stayed within the protective housing designed to keep them safely enclosed. Uncontained engine failures, where engine fragments fly out of this housing, can result in serious damage to the main body of an aircraft. Qantas flight QF520 took off from Sydney at 12:35 p.m. (8.35 p.m. Thursday ET), circled a few times and diverted to land at Sydney, tracking data from Flightradar24 showed. Qantas said the plane landed safely after appropriate procedures were conducted and added it would be investigating the cause of the engine issue.

We pay 37% taxes on our income up to $190,000 (Australian dollars) and 45% on anything over that. Housing prices are very high, but we don't pay property taxI paid over one million for a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house that's about 15 minutes outside the city. One benefit is that we don't pay property taxes. I figure if we stay here for five years, we'll break even on the amount we would have paid in property tax in the US. Plus, it's predictable — we own the home without worrying about rising property tax rates.

In Wisconsin’s hotly contested U.S. Senate race, Republican Eric Hovde has focused much of his closing messaging on attacking the finance career of Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin’s girlfriend, highlighting their same-sex relationship. Another Hovde campaign ad features a narrator talking about Baldwin’s relationship with Brisbane. “This is Sen. Tammy Baldwin,” the narrator says. Now vying for a third Senate term, Baldwin has said the attacks are designed to distract from her record. Baldwin campaign officials and LGBTQ rights organizations said that Hovde’s attack lines amount to a cynical ploy by Republicans.

A report from travel news site Skift shows that seven major airlines have retreated from the country in the past four months. Longer flights require more fuel, which make flights more expensive. "Indeed U.S. carriers are making hard but very commercial decisions to drop Chinese services and redeploy the aircraft elsewhere," he said. Brisbane, Australia CNN —Australia’s national broadcaster has released an internal review that found “systemic” racism within its ranks, prompting an apology from the managing director to all current and former staff. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) review was announced last year after high profile Indigenous anchor Stan Grant stepped away from anchoring duties, accusing the network of failing to publicly defend him from racist attacks. The report released Tuesday, titled “Listen Loudly, Act Strongly,” found that “systemic” racism exists within the ABC and that staff members also experience racism from external sources. Of 120 staff members interviewed by external consultants, only one said they hadn’t personally experienced racism. However, that person said they were “aware of racism occurring at the ABC.”“This response overwhelmingly indicates that racism exists within the ABC workplace, and that ABC staff are subjected to racism from external individuals and organisations in connection with their work,” the report found.
