But Trent Alexander-Arnold drilled in an 80th-minute equaliser with his right foot to deny City a 24th successive home win in all competitions. The result left City on 29 points from 13 games with Liverpool one point behind and Arsenal later claimed a late 1-0 victory at Brentford thanks to Kai Havertz's header. Arsenal leapfrogged Liverpool and City into first place with 30 points. Haaland did what he does best, firing home after Alisson's poor clearance had found its way to Nathan Ake. CNN —Golf courses, despite occupying large green spaces, are not necessarily good for the environment. Santa Barbara's Ocean Meadows golf course has been returned to its wetland state, which doubles as a flood defense for the city. Rivers and streams are often diverted or altered to make way for a golf course, but conservationists want them to flow freely. In other areas of the country, local councils are repurposing unprofitable municipal golf courses to create more natural spaces. A golf course turned nature reserve, Yalukit Willam can now be enjoyed by the Melbourne residents.

Man United slump to fourth season defeat at home to Palace
  + stars: | 2023-09-30 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
MANCHESTER, England, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Manchester United slumped to their fourth defeat of the Premier League season as an early Joachim Anderson strike earned Crystal Palace a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Saturday. Having tasted defeat in their previous home league match, against Brighton and Hove Albion, the below-par hosts again found themselves behind in the 25th minute as Anderson arrowed into the top corner. With plenty of time to find a leveller on home turf, clear-cut chances remained few and far between in the Manchester rain, with Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone enjoying a quiet afternoon. Mason Mount missed United's clearest opening in the second half, with Palace seeing out a victory that moved the visitors up to ninth in the standings, one place above the 20-time top-flight champions. Chelsea's woes continued as they lost at home to Aston Villa and Sheffield United slumped to the bottom of the table as they suffered a humiliating 8-0 home thrashing by Newcastle United in which eight different Newcastle players scored. The first north London Premier League derby since 2014 not to feature Harry Kane produced an enthralling contest at The Emirates where the two unbeaten sides went toe-to-toe. Arsenal twice led, first through Cristian Romero's 26th-minute own goal, and again thanks to Bukayo Saka's penalty early in the second half. Mitoma then wrapped up the points as Brighton moved above Tottenham and Arsenal with 15 points. Newcastle ran riot at Sheffield United in the weekend's final action as they put eight past the hapless Blades -- their biggest win in the Premier League since they put eight past Sheffield Wednesday in 1999.

But Forest grabbed a goal back in the 83rd minute through Taiwo Awoniyi and pressed for an unlikely point. ANXIOUS FINISH"Welcome to the Premier League!" Liverpool manager Klopp suspended and fined for media comments
  + stars: | 2023-05-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
May 18 (Reuters) - Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has been suspended from the touchline for two matches and fined 75,000 pounds ($95,000)following his comments to the media after the match against Tottenham Hotspur on April 30, the Football Association said on Thursday. After Liverpool's 4-3 home win, Klopp accused referee Paul Tierney of having something "against" Liverpool. The referee's body reviewed the audio of Tierney's exchange with the Liverpool manager and said he acted in a professional manner throughout. Liverpool are fifth in the league standings with 65 points, seven points ahead of sixth-placed Brighton and Hove Albion but having played two matches more. With relentless Manchester City winning at Everton in the earlier kickoff to move four points clear, long-time league leaders Arsenal knew only a victory would suffice. The result also moved Brighton up to sixth place with games in hand on the teams around them. City could even secure it before that if Arsenal lose against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. I don't think City are going to do too many mistakes now," Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard said. And there was a lethargy about Arsenal's play as Brighton sucked the life out of them with their measured passing game.
Arsenal's seventh successive league win moved them to 72 points from 29 games with City, who still have to play the London club at home, on 64 having played one game less. Jean-Philippe Mateta's late goal sparked jubilation amongst the home fans as Palace moved into 12th place with 30 points, five points ahead of third-from-bottom Leicester. Pressure is intensifying on Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers as his side lost for the fifth time in six league games. Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers drew 1-1 at the City Ground as both clubs stayed far too close to the relegation zone for comfort. The result took both teams above Liverpool with Brighton in sixth place and Brentford in seventh.
Had Arsenal beaten City in the top-of-the-table clash they could have been heading into Saturday's lunchtime kickoff at Aston Villa with the chance to move nine points clear. Arsenal's lunchtime kickoff at Villa gives them the opportunity to lay down a marker and move three points clear again. Villa have suffered back-to-back defeats under former Arsenal manager Unai Emery for the first time since he took charge, but the Spaniard would take satisfaction from getting one over Arteta, the man who replaced him at Arsenal. With so much of the focus on Arsenal and City, Manchester United have quietly moved themselves to within touching distance of the top two. Bournemouth, in 19th place, travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers while third-from-bottom Everton host Leeds United who are just one point above them in 17th.

"When you start like this you don't deserve anything in a Premier League game," Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said. Manchester United consolidated their top-four position with a 2-1 victory at home to Crystal Palace, although it came at a cost with midfielder Casemiro shown a straight red card. Everton are in 18th place with 18 points behind West Ham United on goal difference before the late kickoff. For Arsenal it was a wake-up call and they will be hoping for a favour from Tottenham, who play second-placed Manchester City on Sunday. Arsenal host Manchester City on Feb. 15.
CNN —Lionel Messi had a penalty saved but Argentina booked its ticket to the knockout phase of the 2022 World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Poland. The opener came after Messi, Argentina’s all-time top goalscorer, had his penalty saved by Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny. Álvarez’s sublime finish midway through the second half capped off a nail-biting evening for Argentina, who will now face Australia. Poland advanced to the knockout stages by the skin of its teeth, qualifying on goal difference. While the Polish attack offered very little throughout the game, Argentina cranked up the pressure – and both Messi and left-back Marcos Acuña coming close.

BRIGHTON, England, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Brighton and Hove Albion failed to score for the third Premier League game in succession as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by struggling Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. Roberto De Zerbi's side dominated throughout but lacked a cutting edge as Forest hung on for a gritty point. The first top-flight meeting between the sides since 1983 was hardly a classic as Brighton suffered a frustrating night in their 200th Premier League fixture. Tariq Lamptey and Pascal Gross both had good opportunities after the break for Brighton while Forest rarely managed an attack and failed to register an effort on target.
Kamada and Mitoma strike as Japan breeze past United States
  + stars: | 2022-09-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Jesus Ferreira's early header had sailed over the bar from Sergino Dest's cross in an encouraging start for the United States, but that was to prove a rare sight of goal for Gregg Berhalter's side. Arsenal goalkeeper Turner ensured the United States were not on the end of a heavier defeat with a string of fine saves in the second half. The 28-year-old kept out a 55th minute effort from Junya Ito before denying Kamada a second of the game 10 minutes later. But there was nothing Turner could do to prevent Mitoma from adding Japan's second in the 88th minute. The Japanese will be appearing at their seventh consecutive World Cup in November and have been drawn to face Germany, Spain and Costa Rica in the group phase while the United States meet England, Iran and Wales.
