Reddit filed for an IPO, revealing nearly 10% of its shares are owned by entities related to Sam Altman. AdvertisementLast week, not long after Reddit made moves toward a public listing, headlines began to appear about an unexpected figure: Sam Altman. For example, Hydrazine Capital II is listed as owning nearly 9.9 million shares of Reddit. But Altman, at most, owns 5% of Hydrazine Capital II's holdings, or 492,720 of its Reddit shares. AdvertisementThe various entities point to a side of Altman — Altman the investor — that has receded from view since he has become known to the public as OpenAI's CEO.

Venus Aerospace is a US startup developing a Mach 9 hypersonic jet known as Stargazer. The ultra-speedy plane would carry up to 12 people and fly some 5,000 miles in just one hour. Insider spoke with Venus' co-founders to learn about the recent developments and the obstacles ahead. The last time humans witnessed supersonic travel was the legendary Concorde, which operated from 1973 to 2003. Denver-based Boom Supersonic is leading the pack with its faster-than-sound Overture jet, already securing over 100 orders from United Airlines, Japan Airlines, and American Airlines.

Last December, it decided to make its own engine after engine manufacturers refused to help. Now its Symphony engine will be made with the help of FTT, GE Additive, and StandardAero. Sustainable aviation fuel is made from sources like cooking oil and waste, and can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel. The company is aiming to be net zero by 2025, and Scholl said using sustainable aviation fuel is key to this. Boom's Symphony engine.

The 112,000 tons of carbon dioxide that Charm will remove is more than ten times the total quantity of carbon dioxide that has been removed so far with human techniques. "It's sort of a brilliant, but accidental, discovery," Reinhardt told CNBC. "It's a little it's a little odd or unusual, but uniquely American, in that we're basically pumping barbecue sauce into old oil and gas wells," Reinhardt told CNBC. There are about 2 million abandoned oil and gas wells in the U.S., and owner-operators are eager to find another use for them, Reinhardt told CNBC. We will run out of waste biomass long before we before we exhaust the subsurface capacity," Reinhardt told CNBC.
Denver startup Cosmic Aerospace is developing a fully electric plane to reduce air pollution from regional flights. The aim is to build an electric plane that operates without any emissions but that can still fly for just over 600 miles. Alex Teng, a partner at 50 Years, told CNBC his firm invested in Cosmic partly owing to the cofounders' experience in aviation. The fund also liked that Cosmic is tackling a problem that other developers of electric planes and air taxis have not solved yet -- getting beyond the short hop flight. "Electric aviation has always suffered from a range problem," Teng said, "but my average flight is over 500 miles personally.
In recent years, numerous pretenders to the throne – supersonic, hypersonic, hydrogen-powered, with anti-boom technology – have been whizzing round, conceptually at least, but many of these projects promising seamless super-fast travel have instead stalled, sputtered out or hit delays. The Destinus concept is hydrogen-powered flight at five times the speed of sound, cutting flight duration to less than a quarter of current commercial air travel. Its first two prototypes have made successful test flights and are about to start testing hydrogen-powered flight. Hydrogen-powered aviation is still in its infancy, with hydrogen jet engines yet to enter commercial use. The upcoming prototype, Destinus 3, will be supersonic and the hope is for it to achieve supersonic hydrogen-powered flight in 2024.

"We see Frontier's advanced market commitment as an important demand signal boost for the carbon removal market. Carbon dioxide emissions from energy production topped 36 billion tons last year, according to the International Energy Agency, with total global carbon dioxide emissions projected to have been 40.6 billion tons in 2022, according to the Global Carbon Project. So far, Frontier has spent $5.6 million buying nearly 9,000 tons of contracted carbon removal from 15 carbon dioxide removal startups that are collectively pursuing seven methods. And Living Carbon is a synthetic biology startup working on engineering natural systems to remove carbon dioxide. "However, the science is increasingly clear: Carbon removal is an increasingly necessary tool for limiting warming.
Already, some of the world’s biggest airlines are signing on to Air Company’s vision. Jet Blue Ventures, the airline’s investment arm, also invested directly in Air Company’s $30 million Series A funding round earlier this year. Air Company's carbon-neutral, CO2-derived fuel was successfully used in August 2022 during a test flight in partnership with the US Air Force. Air Company“How we think about what the company does is trying to solve humanity’s toughest problems,” Gregory Constantine, co-founder and CEO of Air Company, told CNN in an interview last month. But Air Company’s production process starts by pulling harmful carbon emissions out of the air.
CFM International told media on Sunday that the company has no plans to build a supersonic engine for Boom. Colorado-based startup Boom Supersonic is developing an ultra-high-speed jet, known as Overture, that could catapult travelers from New York to London in less than four hours. But, there is one problem — no engine makers want to help Boom create a supersonic engine. Engine maker Rolls-Royce was at one point a contender, having signed an "engagement agreement" with Boom in 2020 to look into a supersonic engine. However, if Boom is able to pull off creating a supersonic engine, it could give the company a big advantage in the industry.

Travel analyst Henry Harteveldt told Insider that Boom may build its own engine, which could be advantageous. However, Rolls-Royce told AIN Online in early September that it has since left the table. "We've completed our contract with Boom and delivered various engineering studies for their Overture supersonic program," Rolls-Royce said. "As a practice, we avoid commenting on any ongoing and confidential negotiation with our suppliers, until both sides are ready to announce jointly," Boom told Insider on Friday. "However, we can reconfirm our intention to announce Boom's selected engine partner and transformational approach for reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable supersonic flight, later this year."
"The last time the world attempted supersonic, it was a fierce competition between countries," Scholl added. "But the team coming together with a vision of making the planet more accessible and making the earth a smaller place I find very pointedly to be a global team." Pete Syme/Insider

Experts have estimated that aviation is responsible for nearly 2% of global greenhouse-gas emissions and 2.5% of carbon-dioxide emissions. Some aviation giants, like United, are signing purchase agreements to buy electric aircraft. Today he serves as CEO and chairman of the company, which aims to be a pioneer in electric aircraft. In 2000 he founded Aviation Technology Group, which developed the ATG Javelin very light jet before ceasing operations in 2007. He is also a founding member of the Nordic Network for Electric Aviation.
