Soto, 26, is hands down this winter’s most highly sought-after free agent, valued as much for his elite baseball skills as for his birth date. And in an age of swing-for-the-fences baseball, Soto struck out just 16.7% of the time, while the league whiffed at a 22.2% clip this season. Free agency is “going to be exciting,” Soto told reporters moments after the Yankees lost Game 5 of the World Series, ending the baseball season. The AL champion Yankees had the second-highest MLB payroll, at $309.8 million for their 40-man roster, according to Baseball Prospectus. There's no telling when Soto or other any free agents will come to terms with their 2025 teams.

So let’s do our best to tell you about Game 5 of the 2024 World Series — the game that crowned the Los Angeles Dodgers the champions of baseball, but also very possibly the craziest World Series clincher ever. Was that upside-down enough to qualify as the craziest World Series clincher ever? That was Game 5 of the 2024 World Series, the only postseason game in history in which all that happened. On one hand, STATS tells us that the previous two teams to do it in a World Series game both won anyway. That would be the Cubs, in Game 7 in 2016, and the Cardinals, in The David Freese Game (Game 6) in 2011.

CLEVELAND — The baseball gods work in the shadows, scripting moments and matchups and sequences that we couldn’t begin to fathom. Take, for instance, the night of June 26, when Matthew Boyd just so happened to flip on a Cleveland Guardians game to gauge the pulse of the team desperate for his services. But in late June, shortly before Noel arrived, he suffered an elbow injury that the Guardians have kept discreet. “I’m like, ‘No, I’m just not hitting well, Dad,’” Fry said. This was the baseball gods working overtime to deliver us October goodness, a beautiful blend of tangled storylines and jaw-dropping momentum shifts.

The Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays will resume a June 26 game that was suspended for rain in what will be the first game of a doubleheader on Monday. Back in June, Jansen, then playing for the Blue Jays, was at the plate with one out and one on in the top of the second when the game was suspended. “I don’t even know how this works,” Jansen said when asked about the suspended game after he’d been traded to Boston. The Blue Jays will have some funky developments in the game, too. Though the suspended game will end on Aug. 26, it will be officially recorded as having taken place on June 26 in the record books.

I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. Liz McGuire was at a Blue Jays game in Toronto on Friday night, sitting on the third base line and talking with a friend, when a foul ball suddenly hurtled toward her at 110 miles per hour, striking her in the head and leaving a large lump above her right eye. McGuire, 40, didn’t get to keep the ball that hit her, but now, 110 personalized Topps baseball cards bearing a picture of her swollen forehead have been mailed to her. Bo Bichette, the Blue Jays shortstop, was up to bat during the late innings of Toronto’s game on Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays when he fouled off a pitch. The ball was fired over the protective netting in the lower bowl of Rogers Centre and behind the third base line, where McGuire was sitting with her friend. McGuire said she briefly turned her head away from the field to talk to her friend and didn’t see the ball barreling toward her.

The Twins advanced — for the first time in 21 years — to play the defending World Series champion Astros. It's familiar territory for Correa, who played for Houston for seven seasons before signing with Minnesota in free agency. The Blue Jays hit the ball hard again and made Gray work for his first career win in the playoffs, but the veteran right-hander finished five effective innings. Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi, one of four Blue Jays who made 31 or more starts this season, was greeted by a single by Max Kepler.
