“If Joan of Arc was a glamour girl,” quipped Roan’s makeup artist, Andrew Dahling, who worked on the VMA vision. Dahling was inspired by Pat McGrath’s work as runway makeup artist for Dior in the 2000s. Kevin Mazur/Getty ImagesFor Roan’s red carpet look, Dahling had a lighter touch. (Dahling, who was behind Roan’s green body paint and makeup, said the look took around four hours to complete). “It’s not meant to look classically beautiful (like) the Instagram makeup that we see today that’s super blended and perfect,” said Dahling of Roan’s VMAs vision.

Many forms of help are tied to the federal poverty line, which is calculated using a formula that has largely not been updated since the 1960s. The poverty line is calculated in an outdated wayThe current federal poverty line for the 48 contiguous states and Washington, DC, is $15,060 a year for one person, $20,440 for a family of two, and $31,200 for a family of four. Courtesy of Melissa HeddenMuch of the resistance to changing the federal poverty line could stem from the government's desire not to inflate the number of people in poverty overnight. AdvertisementRep. Kevin Mullin, a Democrat from California, has introduced legislation — called the Poverty Line Act— that would modernize the federal poverty line, taking into account actual costs of goods and how prices differ across regions. Do you make above the poverty line but not enough to meet your daily needs?

Bryant West was halfway through high school in Pascagoula, Mississippi, when he dropped out in 2020. But in every state reporting high school graduation rates by gender, research shows female students graduate at higher rates. “I was lashing out because I wasn’t OK,” said Nichols, who ended up leaving high school after ninth grade. Still, the urban district posted a 10-point graduation gender gap in 2022 (84%-74%) and an 11-point gap (84%-73%) in 2021. The graduation gender gap “is harder to explain than some of the other disparities we see,” PRB’s Jarosz said.

As technology shapes customer habits, entire industries, and society at large, digital transformation has become a critical priority for every company. A February report from Deloitte found effective digital transformation initiatives could increase market capitalization by a staggering $1.25 trillion. From artificial intelligence to extended reality, a variety of technologies are shaping digital transformation strategies. He said he expected industries with "significant human implications," such as healthcare and space exploration, to benefit the most from digital transformation. Extended reality — a combination of virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality often called "XR" — is another technology that could revolutionize organizational cultures.

Opinion: A boast that could sink Trump

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. CNN —“I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade,” former President Donald Trump boasted Tuesday on Newsmax. Congress has the power to rein in the court, wrote CNN legal analyst and law professor Steve Vladeck, whose new book “The Shadow Docket” focuses on the Supreme Court. For some, its celebration of a multiracial but purely fictional British aristocracy may even be a big part of its appeal.”As escapism, “Queen Charlotte” is a success.
Mr. Sebesky’s musical interests ranged far and wide. From the beginning, Mr. Taylor and CTI were on a mission to broaden the audience for jazz by exploring intersections with pop, rock and R&B, and by making music that was more accessible to mainstream audiences than some of jazz’s more esoteric strains. It was an approach that displeased some purists, but it sold records, and Mr. Sebesky’s arranging skills were pivotal to that success. Mr. Sebesky arranged the saxophonist Paul Desmond’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (1970), an album of interpretations of Simon & Garfunkel songs. Pairing Mr. Benson with that song was an idea Mr. Sebesky had proposed to Mr. Taylor, but with a twist.
California Looks to Ban Diesel Trucks at Ports by 2035
  + stars: | 2022-11-20 | by ( Paul Berger | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +6 min
An ambitious California plan to require trucking fleets in the state to switch from diesel to electric power faces a potential backup at charging stations. Requiring that dealers and truckers make the switch should give companies confidence to invest in charging stations, Mr. Brasil said. The trucks tend to cost two or three times as much as diesel trucks, which retail for about $150,000. State officials say they have funded 200 charging stations for medium- and heavy-duty trucks so far and that many more are being funded by private companies. Write to Paul Berger at paul.berger@wsj.comCorrections & AmplificationsThe Port of Los Angeles expects to install a small number of charging stations for electric trucks.
