New London is burning after British troops — led by Benedict Arnold — raided the town. About a month later, soldiers fight in Yorktown, Va., in the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. On a recent Saturday evening, hundreds of people gathered in the streets to burn Benedict Arnold, America’s most famous traitor, in effigy. “Burn the traitor!” onlookers screamed. “Burn him!”The procession is an annual piece of street theater, organized by Flock Theatre, a New London troupe.

The American militia men were hidden in the bushes having lunch and playing cards when they heard the horse galloping toward them. He was Maj. John André, head of British secret intelligence. He had only received the information two days earlier from Benedict Arnold, the commander of the fort, and André now was riding south in the hope of getting back behind the British lines. But the militia men, John Paulding, David Williams and Isaac Van Wart, questioned André, realized he was a spy and arrested him. West Point was never attacked, André was later hanged and Arnold, whose name became synonymous with treason, fled.

To the Editor:Re “Spry Diplomat With a Stiff Gait: Aging Leader’s Complex Reality” (front page, June 4):Joe Biden on a bad day is better than 99 percent of Americans on a good one. He adroitly defeated the greatest human threat to U.S. democracy since Benedict Arnold, spearheaded a largely successful first-term legislative agenda, managed to avoid World War III with the Russians while materially supporting Ukraine’s war effort, and has kept an increasingly hegemonic China at bay. President Biden just oversaw the first truly bipartisan legislative effort in years, thus averting a world economic meltdown. If the measure of the man is his gait, speech and memory for trivialities, then we are lost. Otherwise, let his achievements and character speak to his fitness to serve again as our president.
