LONDON — European stocks were slightly higher Wednesday as investors attempted to look beyond escalating tensions in the Middle East and await fresh employment data out of the region. The pan-European Stoxx 600 was up 0.35% in opening trade, with the majority of sectors and major bourses moving in the green. Oil and gas stocks added 2.42% on the prospect of supply disruptions in the Middle East, while travel and leisure stocks dipped 0.25% as airlines diverted flights out of the region. Meantime, shares of British sports retailer JD Sports fell 3.5% even as the company reported expectation-beating revenues and profits for the first half. The attack came on the heels of Israel's deployment of ground forces into south Lebanon, escalating its offensive on Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group.

Markets are now braced for what could follow a likely Israeli retaliation against Iran. watch nowOil prices gained over 5% in the previous session following the missile strike, before tapering to a 2.5% climb. Oil infrastructure 'tempting targets for Israel'Lewis Sage-Passant, an adjunct professor of intelligence at Sciences Po in Paris, described energy markets as jittery, as investors watch for Israel's next moves. Even without direct targeting, much of the world's oil infrastructure sits under these missile's flight paths, so naturally everyone is very nervous." Questions remain whether a strong Israeli response would restore deterrence or trigger further escalation from Iran and tip the nations into a full-blown war.

Nonetheless, the inclusion of defense stocks in sustainably-minded portfolios remains controversial. WASHINGTON — A group of Democrats are raising concerns as to whether companies that received federal funding for semiconductors used the money to support stock buybacks - and criticizing their own party over how the awards are given. Raimondo has stated that CHIPS funding is not meant to pad companies' bottom lines or support stock buybacks. But lawmakers urged her to go further, and ban stock buybacks for companies that receive CHIPS funds. About $33 billion of funding from the CHIPS Act has been allocated, mostly to major companies. It also said decisions on buybacks were independent from any funds released through the CHIPS Act.

The rollout of the Biden administration's CHIPS Act award money has so far focused on providing major awards for major companies, with just four leading-edge semiconductor manufacturers receiving the lion's share of the $33 billion that has been allocated to this point. Now, with $6 billion remaining, the focus is shifting to sending smaller awards to smaller companies—dozens of them, up and down the supply chain. "We are really focused on investing across the semiconductor ecosystem," Michael Schmidt, director of the CHIPS Program Office at the Commerce Department, told CNBC. Intel , Taiwan Semiconductor , Samsung and Micron combined will receive nearly $28 billion, while GlobalFoundries received $1.5 billion and four smaller companies – BAE Systems, Microchip , Polar Semiconductor and Absolics – received a combined $392 million. Another $3.5 billion has been set aside for the "secure enclave" program, which will produce semiconductors for military use.

The Senate passed a $95 billion spending package that included aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. AdvertisementOn April 23, the Senate passed a $95 billion spending package that included foreign aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. In fact, an analysis of financial aid to Ukraine published in October by the website Breaking Defense found that a majority of the billions of dollars in Ukraine aid Congress had approved to date was ultimately spent in the US. The Ukraine aid is expected to be used to provide ammunition, artillery rounds, armored vehicles, and other weapons, the Associated Press reported. The factory, which is expected to employ 150 people when it opens, is expected to benefit from foreign aid to Ukraine.

LONDON — BAE Systems , the U.K.'s largest defense contractor, has established trading relationships with countries accused of human rights abuses, according to a new report that reveals the extensive reach of its lucrative arms business. Included in those are 13 countries on the U.K.'s human rights abuse watchlist, as well as 29 countries whose military actions have injured or killed civilians. It comes as BAE Systems sales have surged, hitting £194 billion ($242 billion) in the 10 years to 2022, with cumulative operating profits totalling £17 billion over the period, according to the report. The report said the booming trade highlighted how some defense companies were profiting from the lucrative arms trade amid rising global instability. "We know it's a bonanza right now for military sales," Overton said Tuesday, during a press briefing for the report's release.

“While some Ukraine-related orders are starting to come through, restocking and the impact of ongoing defense spending increases will be evident further down the line,” he noted. ‘Era of insecurity’Continued US military support for Ukraine on the scale of the past two years is looking increasingly unlikely. But the pressure on Western governments to beef up their military coffers will outlast the Ukraine war, analysts say, and it started to rise even before Moscow sent its troops marching toward Kyiv two years ago. The febrile global environment has helped lift the shares of Renk, a newly-listed German maker of military tank gearboxes, including those donated by Berlin to Ukraine. And this appeal is unlikely to fade soon, given growing defense spending by governments.

As the U.S. presidential election comes into the spotlight, Goldman Sachs has assessed the potential impact on global markets by changes in regulation, taxation, and other government policies. However, it sees U.S. subsidiaries of foreign companies potentially gaining if Trump delivers on a cut to corporation taxes. On average, European companies generate 25% of sales in the U.S., but most come from U.S.-based businesses rather than exports from the EU, according to Goldman Sachs. As these companies run substantial U.S. operations and assets, Goldman also sees them as benefiting from potential U.S. corporate tax cuts under Trump. However, they flagged that Biden has mentioned increasing the rate of corporate tax, "which would have an impact on US-exposed companies."

Defence Minister Yasar Guler said last week that Turkey was in talks with Britain and Spain to buy Eurofighter Typhoon jets, though Germany objected to the idea. NATO member Turkey requested in October 2021 to buy 40 Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) F-16 fighters and 79 modernisation kits for its existing warplanes. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsROME, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Italy's Leonardo (LDOF.MI) is trimming its stake in U.S. unit DRS (DRS.O) as new CEO Roberto Cingolani looks to expand the state-controlled group with major roles in European defence projects. Two sources at Leonardo confirmed that the DRS deal was part of that strategy. Cingolani, a former government minister who became CEO in May, has embraced the need to create broader European alliances to take advantage of rising defence budgets. It has pointed to its cross-border MBDA European missile company joint venture with Airbus (AIR.PA) and BAE Systems (BAES.L) as a model for the projects. Some analysts expressed surprise that the company was reducing its stake in DRS, acquired 15 years ago in a $5.2 billion deal when the Italian group was known as Finmeccanica.

BAE upgraded its forecast in August, guiding that earnings per share would grow by 10%-12% in 2023 after orders soared following Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year. Since then, Israel has invaded Gaza in the wake of Hamas' Oct. 7 attack, upsetting stability in the Middle East.
