The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) said the health authorities in Punjab, the most populous province, had launched the investigation into local use of the drug Avastin, which is licensed for use in Pakistan. On its website, Roche said Avastin was approved in more than 130 countries, including the United States, to treat several types of cancer. Cancer drug Avastin, when used at much lower doses, is similar to eye drug Lucentis and is used in many countries as a low-cost option to treat certain blindness-causing conditions. In its statement, Roche said: "Avastin is not approved for any use in the eye.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's health minister said Sunday that an injectable medicine that was causing a severe eye infection and sight loss in diabetic patients in the province of Punjab has been recalled and an investigation ordered while police are looking for the suppliers. Federal Health Minister Nadeem Jan said in Islamabad that a case has been lodged against the two absconding suppliers of locally manufactured injection Avastin. The Punjab government has formed a five-member committee of experts to look into the matter and report in three days. In a televised news conference along with Jan, provincial Health Minister Jamal Nasir said diabetic patients in Lahore, Kasur and other districts were administered Avastin injections to address retinal damage. However, the injections led to severe infections, ultimately resulting in the loss of sight of a dozen patients.

The drug, trilaciclib or Cosela, was unlikely to meet the main goals of extending overall survival or the time that a patient lives without the disease worsening, G1 Therapeutics said. Cosela is the company's lead therapy and the only drug being tested in clinical trials. However, the drug achieved its goal in the trial of the drug to reduce the occurrence of Neutropenia - an abnormally low count of a type of white blood cell - during induction and reduce its duration. The company is studying the drug in other indications such as breast and bladder cancer. The study was testing a combination of the drug administered along with chemotherapy and Roche's (ROG.S) therapy Avastin in patients with a type of colorectal cancer.

The trial involved 708 adults with HR-positive, HER2-low or -negative breast cancer whose disease has recurred or progressed during or after certain previous treatments. About three-quarters of women with metastatic breast cancer have HR-positive breast cancer. He points to the cancer drug Avastin, which was initially touted as having an advantage in progression-free survival for metastatic breast cancer. Burstein said he is encouraged by many of the presentations at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.
