MELBOURNE, Australia — Anti-war protesters clashed with police on Wednesday outside a military arms convention in the Australian city of Melbourne. Protesters hurled bottles, rocks and horse manure, a police statement said. “Victoria Police is appalled at the behavior of some of the protesters,” the statement said, referring to the Victoria state force. Around 1,800 police officers have been deployed to a Melbourne convention center where the Land Forces International Land Defense Exposition is taking place through Friday. Protesters also threw rocks, horse manure and tomatoes at police horses and officers with shields and wearing riot gear.

Magistrate Kathy Crittenden accepted that Baker was remorseful and was unlikely to drive after drinking again. CNN —Police have arrested and charged a man for allegedly stealing four Olympic medals belonging to Australian rower Drew Ginn. Authorities said Ginn’s medals were believed to have been stolen from the back of a Land Rover parked in the Victorian capital about a week ago. A GoPro camera, headphones and a wetsuit were also stolen, with police saying Ginn had left them along with the medals inside his car during a speaking engagement at a school. “They were hidden away in the car but the car was ransacked completely so lots of stuff was broken and destroyed,” he added. The 49-year-old voiced hope that, rather than being sold, the medals might find their way back to their rightful owner.

CNN —A Singaporean man has been ordered to repay more than 38 million Australian dollars ($25.7 million) after he lost big during a gambling spree at an Australian casino over the span of a few days. Queensland’s Supreme Court ruled Monday that Yew Choy Wong owed that amount to the Star Gold Coast, as well as the casino’s legal fees and interest. He had racked up losses of 47.3 million Australian dollars ($31.5 million) there between July 26 and August 2, 2018. Star Entertainment, which owns the Gold Coast casino, declined to comment on the case. The casino also paid Wong hundreds of thousands of dollars in goodwill payments following his complaints, the ruling said.

Lime, Dott and Tier were the companies selected to offer e-scooter rental in Madrid, with permits granted for 2,000 scooters each. The council’s decision means “rental scooters will disappear from the city from October,” it said. A spokesman for Dott told CNN on Monday that the company had received an official notification from Madrid city hall on Thursday. Madrid is not the first city to take action against e-scooter rentals, which have become increasingly divisive.
