CNN —Australia has warned travelers against drinking spirits made by a Laos distiller, following the deaths of six foreign tourists from suspected methanol poisoning in the Southeast Asian country. “Lao authorities have issued an order prohibiting the sale and consumption of Tiger Vodka and Tiger Whisky due to their concerns about these products being a health risk,” the Australian advisory said. One, who asked not to be named, told CNN they had conducted an independent survey of travelers who also fell ill or were hospitalized after suspected methanol poisoning. Laos Tiger Vodka and Tiger Whisky are a brand of locally produced spirits that are cheap to buy and often used in mixed drinks and cocktails. If not treated, fatality rates are reported to be 20% to 40%, depending on the concentration of the methanol and the amount ingested, according to medical charity Doctors Without Borders, which tracks cases of methanol poisoning globally.

Its street-facing windows offered the perfect vantage point to watch — and photograph — the procession, which travels down through midtown Manhattan to Macy’s department store on Thanksgiving morning. The shift in position came after a $250 billion proposal for a deal, drafted by Azerbaijan's COP29 presidency on Friday, was panned by developing countries as insufficient. It was not clear if the wealthy countries' revised position had been formally communicated to developing countries at COP29, and whether it would be enough to win their support. The U.S. delegation at COP29 and the UK energy ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk, the owner of social media platform X, criticized proposed legislation in Australia that aims to ban social media for children under 16. The legislation, which was introduced in Parliament by Australia’s center-left government on Thursday, is among the world’s toughest on social media. Other countries have tried to impose limits on social media for children, including the United States which requires technology companies to obtain parental consent to collect data from children under 13. This is not the first time Musk has been publicly critical of the Australian government over tech regulation. At the time, Albanese called Musk an “arrogant billionaire who thinks he is above the law.”In September, Musk called the Australian government “fascists” over plans to crack down on misinformation online.

The first emperor penguin found in Australia has been released after spending 20 days in the care of a wildlife expert, the Australian government said Friday. The bird, nicknamed Gus by its caretaker, was released from a vessel off the southern coast of Western Australia on Wednesday morning, according to the state’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. The team initially weighed the penguin at about 50 pounds, only around half the weight of a healthy male. “Good luck, Gus,” Biddulph shouted with a smile after the penguin dived into the water and swam away from the vessel. Don’t stop for anyone.”It remains unknown how the bird ended up arriving in Australia from its icy Antarctic home.
