Those hacked devices ranged from webcams to DVRs to routers, and about half of them were located in the US, according to Wray. That Chinese hacking unit is preparing to “wreak havoc and cause real-world harm” to the US, Wray told Congress in January. Lumen researchers are watching for signs that the Chinese hackers will resurrect the botnet. A Chinese company named Integrity Technology Group managed the botnet for the last three years, according to US officials.

The boreal forests are the largest forests in the world, and in Western Canada they evolved to burn once every century or so. What was troubling, Dr. Baltzer noted, is that fire isn’t supposed to make life harder for the black spruce tree. Any imbalance in this tug of war between life and death can threaten the boreal forests’ ability to store heat-trapping carbon. Given how huge the boreal forests are, her research could help shed light on which parts of the ecosystem were most important to protect.

Aspen is both rich and spendy, with one of the highest concentrations of ultrawealthy homeowners in the country. The record was broken again with another Aspen deal just a week later. “All those bursting wallets and bare walls add up to a consistent demand for paintings and sculpture, enough for Rebecca Hoffman, the founder of the Aspen Art Fair, to plunge ahead confidently with her event, even when trade reports show international art spending down more than 10 percent in 2023.
