Orlando, Florida, police released the identities of the two men killed in a Halloween shooting in downtown Orlando last week. Tyrek Hill, 25, and Timothy Schmidt Jr., 19, were killed Friday when a gunman opened fire shortly after 1 a.m. during a Halloween celebration, police said. At a news conference Friday, Police Chief Eric Smith said Halloween is one of Orlando’s busiest nights of the year, with crowds of 50,000 to 100,000. About 100 police officers were patrolling the area and tackled the shooter soon after the shots were fired, Smith said. The video police released showed an officer knock down the attacker and three others run to help arrest him.

JAKARTA, June 27 (Reuters) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Tuesday launched an unprecedented reparation programme for victims of past human rights abuses by the state, a project critics fear will compensate only a small fraction of those who suffered. "Today we can start restoring the victims' rights," said Jokowi, who came to office in 2014 promising to take up the issue. The compensation will range from educational and health incentives to house renovations, and visas for victims in exile. Research by Indonesia's human rights commission, in cooperation with civil society groups, has estimated there are between 500,000 and 3 million victims and survivors of the 1965 bloodshed. "We will try our best to reach more victims," Anis said.

German police have taken into custody a 32-year-old Iranian citizen suspected of having procured deadly poisons cyanide and ricin to commit an “Islamist-motivated” attack, authorities in western Germany said on Sunday. “The suspect is suspected of having prepared a serious act of violence endangering the state by allegedly procuring cyanide and ricin to commit an Islamist-motivated attack,” the statement said. Police seized electronic storage devices but found neither cyanide nor ricin during the search, Holger Heming of the Duesseldorf public prosecutor’s office told Reuters TV. The authorities are now investigating at full speed.”Heming said the tip came from a security agency of a “friendly state”, without elaborating. News about Sunday’s searches also comes a month after German authorities arrested 25 members and supporters of a far-right group that the prosecutor’s office said was preparing a violent overthrow of the state.
