RAFAH, Gaza Strip—Huddled in classrooms and crouching under tarps slung up in the courtyard, Palestinians seeking refuge from the fighting raging in Gaza have crowded into a United Nations-run school here near the Egyptian border. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees runs 183 schools in the Gaza Strip, most of which have been pressed into service as shelters. The agency, which also runs bakeries and clinics and provides financial aid, has been central to life in the Palestinian enclave for more than 70 years.

RAFAH, Gaza Strip—Hunger is spreading in Gaza as Palestinians living in the enclave grow increasingly desperate in their search for bread and other essential foods after Israel imposed a total siege on the enclave in response to Hamas’s deadly Oct. 7 attack. The bakeries that supply Gaza with bread are shutting down due to a lack of flour and fuel for their ovens. Those that are still working are serving lines of hundreds of people waiting for hours to buy bread. The price of what food remains in shops—mostly dry goods and vegetables—is soaring to levels that many can’t afford.

President Biden declared the world at an “inflection point in history” in an Oval Office address Thursday, linking Israel’s battle against Hamas to Ukraine’s fight against Russia and stressing the need for the U.S. to continue funding both wars. “American leadership is what holds the world together. American values are what make us a partner that other nations want to work with,” Biden said. “To put all that at risk and walk away from Ukraine and turn our backs on Israel. It’s just not worth it.”

RAFAH, Gaza Strip—The United Nations and world leaders were pushing Thursday to get immediate aid flowing into the Gaza Strip as the humanitarian crisis worsened for two million Palestinians who are trying to flee deadly Israeli airstrikes and struggling to find food, water and fuel during a near-total siege. President Biden said early Thursday that the U.S. had secured a deal with Egypt and Israel to send 20 trucks of humanitarian aid into Gaza as soon as Friday as the U.N. warned that the situation is growing increasingly desperate. The Israeli military has directed residents in the northern Gaza Strip to flee south as it prepares for what is expected to be a difficult ground assault designed to end Hamas rule. Israel has given no indication yet when it might launch the next stage of its military campaign.

She and her family fled Gaza City to seek refuge in a high-rise in Rafah. Soon after they arrived, they fled again after Israel issued a warning for people to leave the high-rise, she said. “If Rafah doesn’t have security, where are we to go?” she asked. The woman said she spent three months in Ukraine during its war with Russia. “I didn’t feel such horror while I was in Ukraine,” she said.

Israeli forces exchanged fire with Lebanon’s Hezbollah for a fourth consecutive day on Wednesday, dialing up fears that a second front could open up in the war if the Shiite Hezbollah movement chooses to enter the fray. The Israeli military said an antitank missile from Lebanon was launched toward a military post near the village of Arab Al-Aramshe along the Lebanese border on Wednesday morning. Israel said it struck in Lebanese territory in response. Hezbollah said it fired a missile at an Israeli military vehicle in retaliation for an Israeli attack that killed three members of the group on Monday. An Israeli military officer was also killed in the clashes.

In Gaza City’s al-Karama neighborhood, Ahmad Hassouna, a 42-year-old man wearing an orange T-shirt with a pair of glasses tucked into his collar, paused to catch his breath as he stepped over rubble in the street. “We all came out, my sister, my brother, my mother and me. It was the second such strike on the Rafah crossing in 24 hours. The route is the only border crossing in Gaza not controlled by Israel, which has imposed a blockade on the strip since 2007. The Israeli Defense Ministry on Monday declared a "complete siege" in Gaza cutting off two million Palestinians living there from water, electricity and fuel. Richard Hecht, spokesman for the Israeli military, said on X (formerly Twitter) that he wasn't aware if the border crossing was still open.

GAZA CITY—Israeli forces launched intense shelling and airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on Monday, striking both military and civilian infrastructure in attacks that have caused more than 100,000 people to flee their homes. Palestinian residents of the strip are expressing a sense of dread after strikes hit at least one mosque, government buildings and a school, according to local authorities and the United Nations. More than two million Palestinians are trapped inside the enclave with no way of leaving due to Israeli and Egyptian restrictions on its borders.
