The number of deaths caused by alcohol-related diseases more than doubled among Americans between 1999 and 2020, according to new research. Alcohol was involved in nearly 50,000 deaths among adults ages 25 to 85 in 2020, up from just under 20,000 in 1999. The biggest spike was observed among adults ages 25 to 34, whose fatality rate increased nearly fourfold between 1999 and 2020. Women are still far less likely than men to die of an illness caused by alcohol, but they also experienced a steep surge, with rates rising 2.5-fold over 20 years. The new study, published in The American Journal of Medicine, drew on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to court documents, Iranian officials asked Farhad Shakeri, 51, in September to focus on surveilling and ultimately assassinating Trump. That’s the takeaway from a new Committee to Protect Journalists report about the state of press freedom in the US. Taking a high dose of ADHD drugs is linked to more than five times greater risk of developing psychosis or mania, according to a new study published Thursday in the American Journal of Psychiatry. The research is among the first to find a relationship between escalating doses of the drugs — amphetamines, in particular — and a greater likelihood of psychotic symptoms. The drugs include Adderall, Vyvanse and generic amphetamines, such as dextroamphetamine. The medium dosage — 20 mg to 40 mg of Adderall, 50 mg to 100 mg of Vyvanse or 15 mg to 30 mg of dextroamphetamine — was linked to a 3.5 times higher risk. There was no increased risk of psychosis with another ADHD drug, Ritalin, which isn’t an amphetamine.

The Israeli military said Tuesday that an American woman who was killed during a protest in the occupied West Bank last week was "likely" hit "unintentionally" by Israeli fire. Eygi’s family said she was peacefully demonstrating when she was killed and that video showed the bullet appeared to come from an Israeli military shooter. The Food and Drug Administration’s “hands-off approach” to food additives, including those found in ultraprocessed foods and energy drinks, may allow unsafe ingredients to enter the nation’s food supply, according to the authors of an editorial published Thursday. While food manufacturers can request an FDA review of new ingredients before they are added to products — and they sometimes do — they are not required to do so. From 1990 to 2010, an estimated 1,000 substances were labeled GRAS by manufacturers and were used without notifying the agency, Pomeranz said, citing earlier research. Since then, she added, there have likely been many more ingredients added to the nation’s food supply without the FDA’s oversight. “We have no idea how many substances are in the food supply based on this self-GRAS mechanism,” Pomeranz said.
