Mandatory Credit: Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY SportsAug 7 (Reuters) - Frenchman Gael Monfils put on an impressive display of speed and skill to beat American Christopher Eubanks 7-6(3) 6-7(4) 6-1 to advance to the second round of the Canadian Open in Toronto on Monday. Eubanks battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the second set breaker and leveled the match with a perfectly executed serve and volley in the first meeting between the pair of popular players. But Monfils broke Eubanks in the first game to jump out to an early lead he would not relinquish in the deciding set. Next up for Monfils is a second round meeting with Stefanos Tsitsipas, who enjoyed a first round bye, at the Masters 1000 tournament.

CNN —His nerves may have got the better of him at the French Open last month, but Carlos Alcaraz seems to have found a way to relax his body and mind at Wimbledon. While a 36-year-old Novak Djokovic continues to dominate men’s tennis, this Wimbledon encounter perhaps provided a glimpse into the future. “It’s a dream for me to be able to play a semifinal here in Wimbledon,” said Alcaraz. Alcaraz and Rune embrace after their Wimbledon quarterfinal. He’s having a great, great year as well,” said Alcaraz of his next opponent.

Alcaraz passes test at Wimbledon, Rybakina on fire
  + stars: | 2023-07-08 | by ( Martyn Herman | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
In the men's draw, third seed Daniil Medvedev and fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas both swept through while 2021 runner-up Matteo Berrettini set up a showdown with Alcaraz. With the big-serving Berrettini up next, Alcaraz, who was a break down in the fourth set, said Saturday's test was just what he needed. Rybakina ensured a demoralising 48 hours for Britain as she demolished Katie Boulter 6-1 6-1 to end home hopes in the singles. But she lasted only 57 minutes as Kazakhstan's Rybakina sent out an ominous warning to those wanting her title. Second seed Sabalenka is also in the groove heading into the second week after a 6-2 6-3 defeat of Anna Blinkova.

Inspired Eubanks upsets Briton Norrie

"There's tons of really good tennis players who play professional tennis who never get the chance to play the number one Brit at Wimbledon in an atmosphere like this," Eubanks said. For a player making his Wimbledon debut, Eubanks showed no signs of nerves as Norrie failed to win a point off the American's serve until the seventh game of the match. Rallies were also in short supply as Eubanks mixed power and finesse with his serve and volley game to baffle Norrie to take the opening set. Errors crept into his game in the second set, however, which allowed Norrie to race into a 3-0 lead and the Briton, egged on by a vocal home crowd, levelled the match. Eubanks's power game seemed unsustainable, but the American broke early in the third set and clinched it.

"I feel like I'm ready to play more matches, to play more great matches on that court," U.S. Open champion Alcaraz said after reaching the third round. "It would be amazing to play a final here in Wimbledon. British hopes were further dashed as American Christopher Eubanks claimed the biggest win of his career by stunning 12th seed Cameron Norrie 6-3 3-6 6-2 7-6(3) on Court One. Twice former champion Petra Kvitova cruised into the third round after the ninth seed brushed aside Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2 6-2. Last year's quarter-finalist Jannik Sinner of Italy, seeded eighth, recovered from a poor start to beat Frenchman Quentin Halys 3-6 6-2 6-3 6-4, while Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev downed Adrian Mannarino 6-3 6-3 7-6(5).
