Three weeks after OpenAI's board briefly pushed out CEO Sam Altman without providing a specific reason for its decision, former director Reid Hoffman says he's still puzzled by what took place and why. He stepped down from OpenAI's board in March and said he hasn't spoken with any of the board members, though he said he did communicate with Altman. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella offered to hire Altman, OpenAI president Greg Brockman and their colleagues in a new advanced AI research group. "I do think that we're in a much better place in the world" to have Altman in the CEO seat again, Hoffman said. WATCH: Sam Altman returns as OpenAI CEO and Microsoft secures nonvoting board seat

Sam Altman has returned to OpenAI as CEO, but the details of exactly why the board pushed him out in the first place are still a mystery. They said that Altman wasn't candid, and often got his way. From that description, it sounds like the board really couldn't pinpoint exactly what was wrong, other than some sort of ~bad vibes~. (And the board couldn't even name them!) But ultimately, they did have a point: In the end, Altman got his way.

After a weekend of rumor and speculation, Emmett Shear — former co-founder and CEO of Twitch — confirmed he will take the top job at probably the most high-profile AI company in the world. watch nowTwitch was acquired by Amazon for $1 billion in 2014 and Shear stepped down as CEO of Twitch last year. Before Shear started Twitch, he was the co-founder of Kiko Calendar, a calendar app he worked on through the 2005 Y Combinator program. As head of OpenAI, Shear will likely face pressure from regulators who have been heavily scrutinizing AI model companies given the risks the technology poses around misinformation and potential displacement of jobs. Earlier this month, the U.K. held a pivotal summit on AI safety, attended by major foundational AI companies, to discuss some of the most pressing issues in the field.
