His first major global brouhaha since winning reelection posed the following questions that will help define the character of his second term. There’s no guarantee that Canada, Mexico and China will back down immediately. Trump’s trade war rhetoric is a reminder that in his worldview, the United States has few friends — only adversaries against whom it can choose to win or lose. The prime minister therefore has a huge incentive to avoid a trade war that could cause havoc in the Canadian economy. Initial reaction to Trump’s broadside against Canada and Mexico suggests that many observers see his outburst as a negotiating tactic.

A Dartmouth College sorority and two members of a fraternity were charged in connection with the drowning death of Won Jang, whose body was found over the summer in the Connecticut River following an off-campus party, police said. They are both members of the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity, the same one Jang belonged to. Police said sorority members hosted the July 6 party and members of the fraternity who were over 21 purchased and supplied alcohol. The fraternity and sorority were immediately suspended after Jang’s death. The interest rate outlook will come back into focus next week with key inflation data and Federal Reserve meeting minutes coming out ahead of Thanksgiving, as investors wrap up a major month for markets following President-elect Donald Trump's election victory. The October personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index set to release Wednesday could dent already-dimming hopes for a December rate cut if it comes in hotter than expected. The inflation rate is expected to have increased 0.2% month over month and 2.3% year on year. Rosy expectations Even with the interest rate cut expectations coming in, investors are optimistic on the direction for stocks to close out the year and into 2025. Goldman Sachs' David Kostin this week said he expects the S & P 500 can end next year at 6,500.

CNN —The avian flu virus isolated from a hospitalized teenager in Vancouver has mutations in key areas that could help the virus spread more easily in humans, scientists say. But scientists say the genetic changes are a reminder of what the virus is capable of if it continues to spread. The H5N1 bird flu virus that infected the teen, who is in critical but stable condition, is not the same strain that is transmitting in dairy cattle in the United States. The three mutations are at positions in the virus’ genome that Bloom and other scientists have determined would allow it to attach more easily to human cells. Most of the human H5N1 infections reported in the United States have had red, inflamed eyes as an early symptom, suggesting that’s where the virus entered the body.

Investors may like AT & T for its juicy dividend, but the underlying shares also have "significant upside" ahead, according to Goldman Sachs. The Wall Street investment bank sees a number of factors at play that should boost returns for the Dallas-based telecom giant, which pays a dividend yield of 4.89%. Overall, Schneider anticipates sustained EBITDA growth of 3%, which is 100 to 200 basis points faster growth than Wall Street is currently modeling, he said. That sustained improvement on EBITDA growth should warrant a higher multiple over time, he added. The stock, which hit a 52-week high on Monday, is up 37% year to date, excluding the dividend.

Do changes in national leadership change an investment thesis, or is it full steam ahead on dominant themes for the years ahead?
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Ben Maddern, stay-at-home dad and founder of South Australia's Strongman competition. Four years ago, at 47, I embarked on a huge life shift: I sold my business, stopped working, and became a stay-at-home dad for the first time. It's been a huge shift for me, and I've learned more about myself these last few years than at any time in my career. I've learned new things about myselfIf I had to give parenting advice to anyone, I'd say: just take it day by day. Not only has being a stay-at-home dad taught me it is OK to step out of your comfort zone, but it's important to do so.

Brandenburg was arrested by Salisbury police on Wednesday, and Clark turned himself in to Salisbury police on Thursday. Police said they were contacted by university police on Oct. 31 about an alleged assault at an off-campus apartment complex for college-aged students. David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital this week revealed a fresh stake in agriculture equipment maker CNH Industrial , and increased its bets on Peloton Interactive and gold in the third quarter. The hedge fund, which Einhorn founded in 1996, disclosed in its latest regulatory filing that it took a roughly $79 million stake in CNH during the latest quarter. Einhorn also increased his holding in Peloton by roughly 40%, bringing his stake in the company to about $45 million. That led him to buy medium-sized stakes in a few value companies and take a larger position in gold. Einhorn added 3.1% to his holding in SPDR Gold Trust in the most recent quarter, bringing it to $51 million.

"We have increased our bets on inflation," he told CNBC's Leslie Picker at CNBC's Delivering Alpha investor summit on Wednesday. "We will have another inflection up in inflation," he said. "The policy mix being proposed is inflationary and we will see more of that over the next few years." The latest CPI data released Wednesday showed inflation in line with market expectations, at 2.6%. There is an argument for tolerating it and trying to run the economy as hot as possible.

Value investors believe these companies are undervalued due to temporary issues, market overreactions, or broader economic conditions. The approach is long-term, as value investors wait for the market to recognize the company's actual value, which may take time. On a podcast earlier this year, well-known hedge fund manager David Einhorn of Greenlight Capital lamented that modern-day passive investors pay no attention to "value" of the companies they buy. Outcome Scenarios : If the stock price stays above the strike price, the option expires worthless, allowing the investor to keep the premium as profit. If the stock price falls below the strike price, the option buyer will likely exercise it, obligating the seller to buy the stock at the strike price.

As he has done several times before, Einhorn pointed a finger at passive, index investors: "The passive people, they don't care what the value is." "I view the markets as fundamentally broken," Einhorn said back in February on Barry Ritholtz's "Masters in Business" podcast. "You have these companies, and all they do is they manage these expectations, right?," Einhorn told Picker. This is causing great pain to value investors like Einhorn, many of whom have seen cash flee their funds. Another reason for long-term underperformance by active managers: They are competing against other active managers who have very little competitive edge against each other.

One of the surest bets when the Federal Reserve began cutting interest rates was for bond prices to rise while yields came under pressure, but that hasn't played out according to plan. This market, which has defied so many historical patterns, has kept the pressure on bond yields up due to a variety of factors, including more persistent concerns about the federal deficit. But her bigger concern remains on the bond side of the markets. She said investors will be "more wary" given the election rally and the pulling forward of expectations about tax cuts and regulation and expectations they will contribute to growth. But it is in the bond market where investors should expect even more volatility.

Investors looking for opportunities in this elevated market may want to take a look at U.S. small caps, according to Nuveen's Saira Malik. "That's why we're looking at areas that are cheap — small caps trading at that big discount. Malik views small caps as one of the most attractive areas amid a broad rally that's boosted the major indexes and valuations to new highs. "Deregulation is going to make the world an interesting place, because it could open up more M & A activity, which, again, positive for small caps trading at that deep discount to their counterparts," Malik said. CNN —The United Nations has accused Israel of “severe violations” of a 50-year-old agreement with Syria, saying it has engaged in “engineering groundwork activities” that encroach on a key buffer zone in the Golan Heights. The Israeli military said the strikes were part of a larger effort to target the capabilities of a Hezbollah unit responsible for weapons smuggling. Saban said that Hezbollah is unlikely to try and trigger an Israeli military offensive from the Golan, however. In July, the IDF said it struck Syrian military infrastructure in retaliation for alleged breaches. “The IDF holds the Syrian military responsible for all activities occurring within its territory and will not allow any attempts to violate Israeli sovereignty,” the Israeli military said.
