CNN —If you planned on traveling aboard Spirit Airlines for the holidays, which filed for bankruptcy Monday, you shouldn’t worry. Multiple US airlines have undergone bankruptcies over the years, including United Airlines in 2002, Delta Air Lines in 2005 and American Airlines in 2011. That same low fare model pushed competitors at legacy airlines to offer options for basic economy tickets, tickets that compare to Spirit’s prices but come with restrictions. She said the stigma of bankruptcy may impact Spirit going forward with travelers uncertain of its future. For now, travelers shouldn’t stress as the airline begins to navigate bankruptcy, as it seems like a pretty standard bankruptcy filing, according to Foss.

The bulk of a team's revenue in a given season comes from the ballooning media rights fees that the NFL charges for its games. Contrast that with leagues like the NBA and NHL, where clubs receive a much bigger cut of playoff ticket revenue. Stadium ownership and operating rights are also a lucrative source of revenue for NFL teams. Perennial playoff teams can also be more attractive to sponsors because they can almost guarantee that thousands of additional people will be in their stadiums every year.

NFL owners voted Tuesday to allow private equity firms to take a maximum 10% stake in teams. The league has never allowed private equity investment before. No other league takes a percentage of the so-called carry — the percentage of a fund's investment profits that managers typically receive as compensation — for all private equity firms. The NFL has informally told investment firms that if they make a return on an investment, it wants a portion of the profits to be returned to the league. It was unclear if the NFL's plans to take a piece of profits would deter future investment from private equity.
