PHOENIX — Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego will be Arizona’s first Latino senator next year, NBC News projects, after he defeated Republican Kari Lake amid a protracted vote count in one of the key swing states. Trump won the state in 2016 and won it again this year by what appears to be his biggest margin in any of the core swing states. But he kept his message homed on the issues behind those identities, linking them to border security, comprehensive immigration reform and expanded mental health services for veterans. Gallego focused on his party’s strengths, like reproductive rights, but he also tried to tackle his party’s weaknesses head-on, advertising on issues like border security. Lake tried to tie Gallego to Biden and his administration on a host of issues, but especially border security, a key focus of hers during their lone debate in October.

Tim Walz vowed to protect his state from President-elect Donald Trump’s “hateful agenda” while delivering remarks in Eagan, Minnesota, on Friday afternoon. “The other side spent a lot of time campaigning and talking about and promising that they would leave things up to the states. “The moment they try and bring a hateful agenda in this state, I’m going to stand ready to stand up and fight,” said the 60-year-old governor as supporters applauded. “As long as I’m governor of Minnesota, we will defend our kids’ freedom to go to school without worrying about being shot dead in their classroom,” said Walz. After promising to fight against the Trump-Vance agenda, he extended an olive branch to Trump-supporting Minnesotans.

ET Wednesday showed large gender gaps for the candidates: Among men, who made up 47% of the electorate, Harris won 42% of the vote and Trump won 55%. Among women, who made up 53% of the electorate, 53% voted for Harris and 45% for Trump. Broken down by race and education, the gender gap showed even wider splits in some cases: An overwhelming 91% of Black women voted for Harris vs. 7% who voted for Trump, and 57% of college-educated white women voted for Harris vs. 41% who voted for Trump. But among white female non-college graduates, only 35% voted for Harris vs. 63% who voted for Trump. But just 14% of voters said abortion mattered the most to their votes when they were asked to choose out of five issues.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said Friday that her office is investigating whether former President Donald Trump’s violent remarks about former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney broke the law. A spokesman for the attorney general's office, Richie Taylor, confirmed to NBC News the office is "looking into" whether Trump's remarks violated Arizona law. NBC News reached out to the Trump campaign for comment. Trump has escalated his violent rhetoric on the campaign trail in the last month. But the former president, no stranger to personal attacks, reserved his most violent comments for former Rep. Liz Cheney. In a lengthy and uncompromising riff on Cheney, Trump seemed to insinuate that the former congresswoman would be less of a “war hawk” — as Trump referred to her — if she was in a war herself with guns “trained on her face.”“She’s a radical war hawk. You know when the guns are trained on her face — you know, they’re all war hawks when they’re sitting in Washington in a nice building,” Trump continued. In the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, the relationship between Trump and Cheney frayed. Cheney and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, one of the architects of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, have endorsed Harris over Trump.

But for some Arizona voters, only Trump’s election denialism is resonating. A Fox News poll in late August found 32% of Arizona voters surveyed didn’t believe Biden was legitimately elected president. Taylor Hammond, 30, a real estate agent from Phoenix, doesn’t believe Trump lost in 2020. PHOENIX — Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban said Saturday while campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris that he would campaign against her if he thought she would tax wealthy people’s “unrealized gains,” which is part of the tax plan she has endorsed. The comments came at a town hall event attended by local Arizona entrepreneurs, which Cuban headlined as a surrogate for the Harris-Walz campaign. Toward the end of the event, a man asked Cuban, “Quick question: What about unrealized gains?”Cuban assured the audience that Harris wouldn’t tax unrealized gains. That is true: While Harris’ campaign issued a blanket endorsement of Biden’s 2025 budget proposal, it hasn’t actually spoken specifically about taxing unrealized gains. On Oct. 12, the Harris-Walz campaign deployed famous actor Bryan Cranston to stump in Arizona.

John McCain during a packed rally at the University of Arizona. “Being here in Tucson, I’m thinking about my friend, John McCain,” said Obama, speaking to several thousand Arizonans. “It required one more vote to keep it intact, and that vote was the late, great John McCain,” Harris said in the Phoenix suburb. “A great American, a war hero: John McCain. “Thanks to John McCain, he didn’t do it,” he added to thunderous applause.

LAS VEGAS — GOP candidate Sam Brown spent Thursday’s Nevada Senate debate taking shots at Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen, as he still faces a polling deficit with Election Day creeping nearer. In contrast, Rosen spent the evening focusing largely on her own track record and roots in Nevada, hoping to stay above the fray and ride her polling lead. “It’s interesting that Senator Rosen would mention a desire to want to fine greedy corporations,” said Brown. And when moderators asked Rosen and Brown if Congress should do an independent investigation into UFOs, Rosen answered the question. Fearing that such rights could be undone in the future, reproductive rights advocates garnered enough signatures this summer to put on the ballot a measure to enshrine abortion rights into their state’s constitution.

St. Olaf College boasted an 87.6% voter turnout rate in 2020, taking home the top prize in the All In Campus Democracy Challenge as the most civically engaged college campus in the country. The small liberal arts college reached that number with help from its “election ambassador program,” and this year, the school is looking to break its own record. “We are all about interpersonal connections,” said junior Roxi Wessel, an election ambassador. Several factors make St. Olaf the highest-voting college in the country, including its nonpartisan approach to the election ambassador program. Jen McAndrew, from Tuft University’s Tisch College of Civic Life, said that while Minnesota makes campus voting accessible, laws in other states are creating more barriers to entry.

PHOENIX — Republican Kari Lake and Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego faced off in Arizona’s feisty first and only Senate debate Wednesday evening, trading shots over the border, abortion, tax policy and more. Lake has long made the border a cornerstone of her campaign, chastising Gallego for supporting the Biden-Harris administration’s immigration policies. Gallego, in turn, has made the bipartisan border bill that Trump and Lake opposed a big part of his campaign. “He acts like he cares about us,” Lake said of Gallego, “speaking directly to the women” watching the debate. Talking to the media immediately after the debate, Gallego said: “She needs to be loud, she needs to lie because she’s weak.

A coalition of reproductive rights organizations is unleashing a $15 million advertising campaign backing abortion rights as Arizona faces a key ballot measure on the issue this fall. The ad blitz from Arizona for Abortion Access includes broadcast, streaming, radio and mail advertisements that will blanket the state through Election Day — and as early voting kicks off in the state on Oct. 9. The group has spent about $2 million on advertising in the last two months, according to the tracking firm AdImpact. The ad is Arizona for Abortion Access’ second spot on the Arizona airwaves. The central clash in the pivotal Senate race in Montana — and the fight for control of the Senate itself — was on full display Monday night as Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican Tim Sheehy faced off in a heated debate. Like other vulnerable Senate Democrats, Tester tried to make it personal — touting his bipartisan bona fides, highlighting his own connections to his red-leaning state and suggesting his opponent cannot be trusted. Montana is the party’s next top target, with Tester running for re-election in a state Trump won by 16 points in 2020. James Richmond, 50, an IT consultant and voter in Helena, pointed to those comments in explaining why he plans to support Sheehy, despite supporting Tester’s work for veterans. An AARP poll conducted in late August found Sheehy leading Tester by 6 points, 55% to 49%.

The office is shared by staff for the Arizona Democratic Party, the Harris campaign, and Senate and House campaigns, to boost turnout for the party in November. “Overnight, several shots were fired into our Tempe Democratic Party coordinated campaign office,” McEnerney said. The coordinated campaign office in Tempe is one of 18 field offices for the Harris campaign in Arizona, according to Patty Socarras, the state Democratic Party's communications director. Additionally, Republican members of the North Carolina congressional delegation, including Sens. The political fallout from Robinson’s past comments could be particularly tough for Trump because of the importance of North Carolina as one of seven key swing states on the presidential map. A Republican-controlled chamber could thwart Harris’ nominees to fill out her administration and the courts, along with her legislative agenda. Top Senate Republicans told NBC News she would need their sign-off to secure votes on any judicial nominees, including for the Supreme Court. The prospect of a split Congress looms over a possible Harris win even if Democrats have a strong year and sweep every swing state. And if it’s a GOP-led Senate, Republicans would control a floor vote. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, would have seniority to be the next Judiciary Committee chair and said he intends to claim the position if Republicans win control.
