Scott Arnould expected traffic and long lines when he arrived at Chicago O’Hare International Airport more than four hours before his flight home to Gulf Shores, Ala., on Tuesday — as experts warned of the busiest Thanksgiving travel week ever. The Transportation Security Administration said it expected to screen 18.3 million travelers from this past Tuesday through Monday — about 6 percent more than in 2023. AAA, the automobile organization, expects this year’s number of travelers will set records, including nearly 72 million motorists. The Midwest is expecting a wind chill, while the South and Northeast are expecting a cold, rainy storm system. Snow is also possible for parts of the Northeast.

EasyJet on Tuesday said it made a record £3.59 billion ($4.5 billion) from charging passengers for flight add-ons such as extra baggage in the full year to October, as the budget airline's CEO criticized a recent Spanish fine over the practice. Many airlines have stripped back what they include in their flight fares in recent years, instead relying on cashing in more from individual add-ons, as competition to offer ultra-low cost base fares intensifies. "We completely disagree with that, we think it goes completely against European law and European law's going to trump that," easyJet CEO Johan Lundgren told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Tuesday. "It's a highly unfair idea that you should not be able to offer products and services targeted for those people who want to use that. Spain's Association of Airlines (ALA), Ryanair, Norwegian and easyJet last week all criticized the fines and said they would dispute them.

Spain's Ministry of Consumer Rights on Friday slapped a $179 million euro ($186 million) fine on five low-budget airlines for "abusive practices" including charging additional cabin luggage fees. Spanish low-cost airline Vueling was ordered to pay 39.2 million euros and EasyJet was fined 29 million euros. Scandinavia's second-largest airline Norwegian and Spanish airline Volotea each received penalties in excess of 1 million euros. The five airlines should discontinue their practice of requiring additional payment for cabin luggage and reserving a seat near a dependent traveler, the ministry said. "We completely disagree with the decision of the Spanish Consumer Ministry and find the proposed sanctions outrageous," an EasyJet statement said, stressing it considers its cabin luggage policy to be aligned with all applicable laws.

An Alabama inmate convicted in a 1994 murder is poised to die Thursday in the state's third nitrogen hypoxia execution this year. Carey Dale Grayson asked to have his execution carried out by nitrogen gas. It refused to do so when Alabama executed Kenneth Smith, the first person in the U.S. to die in a nitrogen gas execution, in January and again in September, when the state executed Alan Miller in a second nitrogen gas execution. Since then, Alabama has become the first state to develop a nitrogen hypoxia execution protocol in addition to lethal injection. “The State of Alabama’s nitrogen protocol has been used twice and has not worked as they swore it would.

But the decline in support for Ms. Harris in some of the country’s most liberal areas is particularly notable. For example, in Fulton County, which contains most of Atlanta, Ms. Harris gained about 4,500 votes, but Mr. Trump gained more than 7,400. He similarly outran Ms. Harris where she made gains in Wake County, N.C., Lancaster County, Pa., and Montgomery County, Texas. In Milwaukee County in swing-state Wisconsin, Ms. Harris lost 1,200 voters compared with Mr. Biden’s total in 2020, while Mr. Trump gained more than 3,500. WASHINGTON — Congress faces a Dec. 20 deadline to fund the government and avert a shutdown, and Speaker Mike Johnson says House Republicans will probably push the fight into early 2025 rather than reach a full-year funding deal this year. And then then we should be actually working on the next year’s appropriations.”But even if they push the fight to early 2025, Republicans won’t have full control over spending decisions. Government funding legislation is subject to the 60-vote threshold in the Senate, which top Republicans have promised to preserve. That means they’ll have to reach a deal with Democrats, who currently control the Senate and want to pass full-year funding this year, not in 2025. “The bottom line is we’ve got to control spending and not allow there to be a runaway spending bill in December,” he said.

WASHINGTON — When President Joe Biden relinquishes power in January, some parts of his legacy will be secure, while others may be undone by President-elect Donald Trump and a new Republican-controlled Congress. The pieces of Biden’s legacy go into four buckets. But it will be difficult for Trump to undo bipartisan legislation, such as measures about infrastructure and preventing gun violence, and the judges Biden appointed can’t be unseated. Biden’s immigration orders are ripe for Trump to target after he ran on a platform of mass deportations and clamping down on border security. Bipartisan Biden-era bills (largely safe)The parts of Biden’s legacy that will be relatively safe are the bipartisan laws he passed, which are subject to filibusters and therefore give Democrats the power to protect them.

Former President Donald Trump's campaign spent the final Sunday of the 2024 election on all-too-familiar turf: responding to the reaction to the candidate. Just hours earlier, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, made a very traditional — and politically safe — appearance on NBC's "Saturday Night Live." Trump campaign aides did not respond to a request for comment. Rob Godfrey, a South Carolina-based Republican strategist, said Trump has handed Harris gifts by playing into her strategy. Last week, Democrats had to perform clean-up duty on a surrogate who has largely been absent from her campaign: President Joe Biden appeared to say Trump's supporters are "garbage."

In a social media landscape often dominated by playful dances and aesthetic montages, one surprising trend remains steadfast: historical grave cleaning. Stacey Habecker, known as “The Clean Girl” online, caused intense controversy with her upbeat and vibrant approach to grave cleaning. Despite the outcry of comments, reaction videos and expert advice, “The Clean Girl” continued creating and re-uploading grave cleaning videos to YouTube, Instagram and TikTok — getting hundreds of millions of views across her platforms. In some cultures, grave cleaning is part of family duty and tradition, such as with Día de los Muertos in Mexican and Central American culture. For members like Justin Frost, the hobby of grave cleaning came as a natural extension of a desire to learn more about his family history.

Two reports released Monday provide a mixed but compelling outlook on the wave of book removals and challenges as the annual Banned Books Week begins for schools, stores and libraries nationwide. The ALA attributed the decline in book challenges in the first eight months of 2024, in part, to the work of anti-censorship activists and “success in courts” against laws that restrict book access. “But, you know, the First Amendment protects the rights of minors as well.”While the ALA’s report shows signs of book challenges abating, objections to certain titles still persist. Like the ALA, PEN said a large portion of the books targeted have racial or LGBTQ themes. It is supported by the ALA, PEN, the Authors Guild, the National Book Foundation and more than a dozen other organizations.
