CNN —Venezuelan authorities are investigating opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for alleged treason after she expressed support for a US bipartisan bill that seeks to block Washington from doing business with any entity that has commercial ties with the government of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro. CNN —Dozens of people detained during protests over Venezuela’s disputed presidential election have been released, according to the local rights group Foro Penal. Video footage from outside one of the prisons shows some of those released hugging loved ones surrounded by cheering crowds. Human Rights Watch has said there are “credible” reports of 24 people being killed during the crackdown on the protests. Jesús Manuel Martínez Medina, a member of the opposition party Vente Venezuela, was detained on August 2 and had been in hospital since October 11. But tens of thousands of tallies published by the opposition suggested a win for opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez.

The proposal would make the minimum age for marriage 18, and seeks to protect the rights and development opportunities for minors. “Minors are not sexual objects, they’re girls,” congresswoman Clara López Obregón said in a statement after the proposal was greenlit. Child marriage remains a widespread practice worldwide and affects around 12 million girls per year, according to the UN’s agency for children, UNICEF. CNN —Argentina was the only country to vote against a United Nations resolution promoting the end of all forms of online violence against women and girls. During Thursday’s UN General Assembly session, the South American nation argued that the resolution contained ambiguous terms such as “hate speech,” “misinformation,” and “disinformation” that could be used “abusively” to restrict freedom of expression. A total of 170 nations voted in favor, while 13 others abstained, including Iran, Russia, Nicaragua, and North Korea. Milei, who ran on a libertarian platform, has rolled out drastic social and economic measures in Argentina since taking office. CNN —Nearly three-quarters of firearms recovered in several Caribbean nations with high crime rates were manufactured in the US, according to the US’s Government Accountability Office (GAO). Almost 5,400 firearms recovered from crime scenes from 2018 to 2022 in several Caribbean nations - including Haiti, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago - can be sourced back to the US, the GAO said. The GAO said they analyzed data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to determine that 88 percent of the recovered and traced firearms in the 25 Caribbean countries they reviewed were handguns. The weapons are typically smuggled through criminal networks, as CNN has previously reported. “Haiti doesn’t produce guns and ammunition, yet the gang members don’t seem to have any trouble accessing those things,” Pierre Esperance, executive director of Haiti’s National Human Rights Defense Network told CNN last May.

Catfishing – often used on social media - is when a person uses false information and images to create a fake identity online with the intention of tricking, harassing, or scamming another person. According to authorities, McCartney pretended to be a young girl, befriended victims on social media and manipulated them into sending him nude images of themselves. “All McCartney’s victims were young, innocent children” as young as 10 years old and “struggling with identity and body image issues and had reached out for help on social media,” Kierans said. CNN —Thirty passengers were injured after a flight from Madrid to Uruguay was hit by “strong turbulence” and had to make an emergency landing in Brazil, Spanish airline Air Europa said on Monday. “Our flight UX045 bound for Montevideo has been diverted to the Natal airport (Brazil) due to strong turbulence,” Air Europa said in a post on X. The plane has the capacity to hold up to 339 passengers, according to Air Europa’s website. The Spanish airline said that another plane was set to depart later on Monday from Madrid and pick up the passengers stranded in Brazil to continue their journey to Uruguay. Air Europa added that anyone who is in need of healthcare is being treated in Brazil’s Natal airport.

Panama is home to the Darién Gap, a mountainous rainforest region connecting South and Central America, that has seen an increase in the number of migrants willing to risk their lives and safety to cross it. The 66-mile (106-kilometer) hike through the Darien Gap brings migrants from Colombia to Panama and is a crucial passage for those hoping to reach the United States and Canada. “The Darién must continue to be a great green lung, not only for us but for the entire region. Its biodiversity cannot be put at risk by illicit activities.”Panamanian figures show at least 174,513 migrants crossed the treacherous Darién Gap, from January to June 6 of this year.
