The Texas Board of Education narrowly voted Friday to allow Bible-based curriculum in elementary schools. Greg Abbott has voiced support for the lesson plans, which were provided by the state’s education agency that oversees the more than 5 million students in Texas public schools. Staci Childs, who is an attorney and a Democrat who voted against the Bible curriculum at Friday's hearing, said she believes it will be challenged in court. The new Texas curriculum follows Republican-led efforts in neighboring states to give religion more of a presence in public schools. The Texas Education Agency, which oversees public education for students statewide, created its instruction materials after a law passed in 2023 by the GOP-controlled Legislature required the agency to do so.

As President-elect Donald Trump doubles down on his mass deportation plan, some Republicans are trying to assuage fears amid growing questions of who will be forced out of the country. The prospect of mass deportations is generating fear and apprehension among families with noncitizen members and businesses that employ undocumented workers. The president-elect has also said he would withhold federal grants to police that don’t cooperate in his mass deportation plan as well as use the National Guard to carry it out. CNN —Sydney has been officially elevated to the ranks of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, becoming the seventh city to join the prestigious series. Starting in 2025, the Sydney Marathon will become the first major marathon in the Southern Hemisphere as it joins elite races in Boston, New York, Chicago, London, Berlin and Tokyo. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued an El Paso doctor on Tuesday, accusing him of providing transition-related medical care to nearly two dozen minors in violation of state law. Texas enacted a law, Senate Bill 14, last year banning gender-affirming care for anyone under 18. Laws restricting access to transition-related care for minors exist in 26 states, according to the Movement Advancement Project, an LGBTQ think tank. The Texas lawsuits come just ahead of the presidential election, where transition-related care has become somewhat of a flashpoint. Robert Roberson, 57, was set to become the first person in the U.S. executed in a "shaken baby" case until members of the state House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee issued a subpoena to have him testify at a legislative hearing this week. Despite efforts by the attorney general's office to appeal, as the execution was scheduled to get underway on the evening of Oct. 17, the Texas Supreme Court, in an 11th-hour decision, sided with the lawmakers, handing Roberson a temporary reprieve. APIA, Samoa — The leaders of the Commonwealth grouping of nations met on Thursday ahead of a summit in the South Pacific nation of Samoa that will feature talks on climate change and the question of reparations for Britain’s role in transatlantic slavery. More than half of the Commonwealth’s members are small nations, many of them low-lying islands at risk from rising sea levels caused by climate change. Among them is Tuvalu, whose climate change minister, Maina Vakafua Talia, urged the grouping to strive for the Paris Accord’s warming goal of 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F), calling new fossil fuel projects a “death sentence” for his country.
