What steps can people take to prevent diabetes? Another risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes is the third form of diabetes, which is gestational diabetes. It usually goes away after the birth of the child, but having gestational diabetes increases the risk of the woman later developing type 2 diabetes as well as the risk of the child developing type 2 diabetes. miodrag ignjatovic/E+/Getty ImagesCNN: What steps can people take to prevent developing diabetes? Employers can use health data to offer personalized support for employees with type 2 diabetes. "It's a growing epidemic," said Dr. Donna O'Shea, chief medical officer of population health, UnitedHealthcare. These stark differences emphasize the crucial role of data in helping employers support the health of their workforce. That leads to more targeted, precise and customized interventions for diabetes care, and in turn, healthier, more productive employees and lower health care costs," Kurtzweil said. Jacobs started monitoring changes to her blood sugar with the help of a device called a continuous glucose monitor — an increasingly trendy wearable. Continuous glucose monitors, or CGMs for short, were FDA-approved in 1999 for people with diabetes to keep constant tabs on their blood sugar levels. Your blood sugar level measures how much glucose is in your blood, which comes from breaking down carbohydrates you eat for energy. After reading about how age-related hormone changes can affect blood sugar, she started tracking hers, and noticed a pattern. Research doesn't support the fear that rising blood sugar after a meal is cause for concern in otherwise healthy people.

CNN —Scientists announced in December the successful creation of the Brain Care Score, a tool for assessing dementia or stroke risk without medical procedures. That score, which also helps patients and doctors identify beneficial lifestyle changes, may now also be able to predict the odds of developing depression later in life, according to a new study. The 21-point Brain Care Score, or BCS, refers to how a person fares on 12 health-related factors regarding physical, lifestyle and social-emotional components of health. “The Brain Care Score is a simple tool designed to help anyone in the world answer the question, ‘What can I do to take better care of my brain?’” said study author Dr. Jonathan Rosand, cofounder of the McCance Center for Brain Health at Massachusetts General Hospital and lead developer of the BCS, in a news release. The higher a participant’s score, the lower their risk of brain disease.

The primary difference is that the bodies of people with type 2 diabetes produce insulin and can't effectively process it. AdvertisementFor a while, I felt shame about my diagnosisI spent the first years of my diagnosis isolated in shame. I wore an insulin pump under my clothing. I switched from an insulin pump to shots, which makes me feel more in control of my dosing. Soon, I was surprised to find that the shame that kept me from hugging people years ago, scared they'd feel my insulin pump, had evaporated.

Read previewA vacation to Myrtle Beach last spring turned into a wake-up call for Jamie Bernardi and her family. Jamie BernardiThis is what researchers variously call the "trickle-down effect," "the ripple effect," or "the halo effect": when a person's lifestyle changes benefit their family members and close contacts who aren't under medical care. Doctors and researchers hope the trickle-down effect will help curb new cases of obesity. Taking controlThe trickle-down effect isn't just an added bonus. Just three weeks after she first jabbed her belly with Mounjaro, Bernardi bought everyone in her family generic watches to count their steps.

Inkinen said Virta can help patients quit GLP-1 drugs and keep weight off by adjusting the foods they eat to help them feel full, similar to how the drugs reduce feelings of hunger. About 82% of patients taking Wegovy experience gastrointestinal issues like nausea and diarrhea. WeightWatchers didn't provide Business Insider with published data to support its claims that it can help people keep weight off after quitting weight-loss drugs. GLP-1 drugs also slash the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and cardiac-related death.

The 21-point Brain Care Score refers to how a person fares on 12 health-related factors concerning physical, lifestyle and social-emotional components of health, according to the study published December 1 in the journal Frontiers in Neurology. Those in their 50s had a 32% lower risk of dementia and a 52% lower chance of stroke. Participants older than 59 had the lowest estimates, with an 8% lower risk of dementia and a 33% lower risk of stroke. But in terms of explaining the overall findings, many past studies have affirmed the benefits of these health components for brain health. “But as scientists, we always want to see proof.”Participating in studies like this one can be a good way to manage your brain health, Isaacson said — especially if you have limited access to health care.

“Controlling blood sugar is more important for those with type 2 diabetes, but losing weight (specifically visceral fat) usually leads to better blood sugar control,” she added. Apps such as Somryst — known as prescription digital therapeutics — aim to raise the bar for personal healthcare delivered via smartphone. Digital therapeutics show promise for treating IBS and insomniaFunding for digital therapeutics surged by 133% between 2020 and 2021, and the sector's global value is estimated to grow from roughly $7 billion to about $28 billion from now to 2030, Fortune Business Insights reported. In fact, many insurance companies want years of data on real-world use before covering digital therapeutics, Insider previously reported. While there are free nonprescription DTxs available from sources such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, those aren't cleared by the FDA, and privately made prescription digital therapeutics often cost hundreds of dollars. "Digital therapeutics are meant to increase access to care.

Tired after eating? Here’s why, and how to fix it
  + stars: | 2023-08-01 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
The tendency to get tired after eating isn’t inherently suggestive of something amiss. If you had a meal high in fat — such as fried foods or pizza — that could make you feel tired. “That can really be an energy zapper.”Just like high-sugar foods, sugary drinks can also make you feel tired once the crash hits, Stefanski said. Choosing more balanced meals and snacks can help you feel less tired after eating, experts said. The test measures average blood sugar levels and shows how much glucose is attached to hemoglobin in red blood cells, Stefanski said.

Patients who took Eli Lilly 's weight loss drug tirzepatide lost up to 34 pounds on average, or 16% of their body weight, the company said in clinical trial results released Thursday. Eli Lilly plans to complete its application for Food and Drug Administration approval of the drug in the coming weeks and expects regulatory action as early as later this year. The FDA approved tirzepatide for Type 2 diabetes last year, but the drug is not cleared for weight loss. The approval would open "up the opportunity for many more people to benefit from tirzepatide," Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks said Thursday on CNBC's "Squawk Box." He added that the drug sets a "new bar for weight loss and people with diabetes."
She found CanShipMeds.com, one of many websites that says it ships a similar drug, Ozempic, from Canada at a lower cost. Delp is hardly the only American searching for weight-loss drugs across the border in Canada or Mexico. Medicare, the federal program that provides health coverage for people 65 and older, doesn't cover weight-loss drugs at all, though there's a push to change that. Lilly said slightly more than 50% of commercial and Part D subscribers have access to the drug via their insurance plans. But new classes of weight loss medications are helping to change this mindset. Still, legislation will be necessary to get coverage of Mounjaro for obesity and overweight treatment by Medicare plans. By law, these plans are banned from paying for weight loss medications. GLP-1s also have been found to help with weight loss as they make individuals who use them feel fuller for a longer period of time. Using GLP-1s drug injections for weight loss has become one of the latest ways some big names in the market are shedding extra pounds. That's why his company has launched a program to offer GLP-1 drugs and corresponding medical care to individuals struggling with obesity or weight loss issues. Pairing personalized coaching with GLP-1s is the key to effective weight loss treatment, Reitano said, and helping patients maximize their results. A new real-time approach to weight managementReitano said it should not be an either/or scenario involving diabetes management of weight loss and that will change over the next decade.
MetroHealth quickly pivoted to telehealth to care for its diverse patient population in response to the pandemic. AdvertisementMetroHealth, a community hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, quickly ramped up its telehealth program for routine office visits and a Hospital at Home program to free up inpatient beds in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. "We flipped to doing pretty much all telehealth visits back in March of last year," said Dr. David M. Margolius, division director of internal medicine. The no-show rate for appointments has dropped from roughly 25% to 5% or less with telehealth visits. Training and support for healthcare providersMany clinicians and operational staff weren't accustomed to telehealth technology initially because nearly all healthcare delivery is based on an in-person care model.
