The Oklahoma City police officer who slammed a 71-year-old man onto the ground after a traffic stop has been charged with one count of aggravated assault and battery, the local district attorney announced Thursday. Body camera footage from the Oct. 27, 2024 incident showed Sgt. Joseph Gibson stop Lich Vu, 71, for an illegal U-turn after a minor incident. In the footage, Vu denied making U-turn, said his car was hit by another person and the officer asked him to sign the citation. The interaction happened within seconds and footage showed Vu hit the pavement headfirst.

No authentic post by Gibson resembling the fabricated screenshot could be found on any social media platforms. Gibson apologized in 2006 for antisemitic remarks he made during an arrest in Los Angeles for driving while intoxicated, according to reports by ABC News and The Guardian. Officials say the public can also play a critical role in this effort. A perverse byproduct of the rise in mass shootings is that it’s given investigators more and more useful information with which to draw a portrait of the typical killer. Gibson firmly believes some mass shootings can be prevented because mass shooters often follow a predictable pattern. While most mass shooters do not suffer from serious psychiatric illness, they can be troubled or distressed in some way. Ultimately, what makes the US so exceptional when it comes to mass shootings is how pervasive guns are.
