The revelations highlight the rising cyberthreats tied to geopolitics and nation-state actor rivals of the U.S., but inside the federal government, there's disagreement on how to fight back, with some advocates calling for the creation of an independent federal U.S. Cyber Force. Talent shortages, inconsistent training, and misaligned missions, are undermining CYBERCOM's capacity to respond effectively to complex cyber threats, it says. Known for his assertive national security measures, Trump's 2018 National Cyber Strategy emphasized embedding cyber capabilities across all elements of national power and focusing on cross-departmental coordination and public-private partnerships rather than creating a standalone cyber entity. Last month, the American Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage after its national supply fell by more than 25% in July. Shortages can be dire for patients since doctors have to make tough decisions about who needs blood transfusions the most. McConnell is CEO of a four-year-old startup called Safi Biotherapeutics, which is working to manufacture inexpensive red blood cells at scale. Scientists have already discovered how to grow red blood cells from stem cells, but it's a costly and complex process that typically yields small amounts at a time. Safi's goal is to build on these advancements and produce large quantities of blood that could eventually be used commercially to help care for patients and avoid blood shortages.

CNN —A US Air Force rescue team airlifted a civilian passenger needing urgent medical care this past weekend from a Carnival cruise ship that was hundreds of miles out in open Atlantic waters. The dramatic May 4 medical rescue involved three helicopter air-to-air refuelings to reach the Carnival Venezia, according to a news release from the 920th Rescue Wing. The mission was carried out by two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, two HC-130J Combat King II aircraft and two teams of rescuers. When the aircraft arrived, rescuers were hoisted down from the helicopters and began preparing the patient for transport, the release said. Neither the 920th Rescue Wing nor the cruise line had further information about the patient’s condition or where he was taken for treatment.

BANGKOK (AP) — A Nasdaq-listed Chinese technology company that makes parts for self-driving vehicles is threatening to sue the U.S. government after it was included in a list of companies the Pentagon says have links to the Chinese military. It was among 17 companies the U.S. Department of Defense recently added to its list of companies it considers “Chinese military companies.”The revised list also includes Megvii, a Beijing-based artificial intelligence company and IDG Capital, a major private equity investment company with holdings in many Chinese technology companies, and major Chinese energy, telecoms and aviation companies. In a statement issued last week, the company said its LiDARs were not designed to conform to military specifications. The U.S. Department of Defense plans to install two more groundwater treatment systems at a former Michigan military base to control contamination from so-called forever chemicals, U.S. Rep.
