  + stars: | 2024-06-25 | by ( Peter Valdes-Dapena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Rivian and Volkswagen Group are forming a joint venture to create vehicle software, the two companies announced Tuesday. The two automakers did not provide a name for the new joint venture company or name its leadership team. Rivian’s fundamental vehicle software design is expected to provide the basis for the new company’s software. The technologies designed by the company will include both the user-interface software that runs things like the entertainment system and gauges and deeper vehicle software that interacts with things like the vehicle’s motors. VW already has its own vehicle software subsidiary, Cariad, and that company will continue with its work, VW chief executive Oliver Blume said on a conference call.

EV maker Rivian to cut 6% of jobs amid price war
  + stars: | 2023-02-01 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
Reuters —Rivian Automotive is laying off 6% of its workforce in an effort to cut costs as the EV maker, already grappling with falling cash reserves and a weak economy, braces for an industry-wide price war. The company is focusing resources on ramping up vehicle production and reaching profitability, Chief Executive R.J. Scaringe said in an email to employees on Wednesday announcing the job cuts. Layoffs at Rivian come amid falling EV prices kicked off by cuts made recently by Elon Musk-led Tesla (TSLA) and Ford Motor Co. To further conserve its cash, Rivian late last year shelved plans to build delivery vans in Europe with Mercedes. Its cash and cash equivalents stood at $13.27 billion as of Sept. 30, 2022, down from over $18 billion a year earlier.
London CNN —Rivian said Monday it would no longer pursue a deal with Mercedes to build electric vans for businesses in Europe. “At this point in time, we believe focusing on our consumer business, as well as our existing commercial business, represent the most attractive near-term opportunities to maximize value for Rivian,” Scaringe said. A memorandum between Rivian and Mercedes was agreed just three months ago. They had planned to produce two large vans — one based on Mercedes’ engineering and another with “second-generation” Rivian engineering. Rivian, which is known for its electric trucks, generated huge hype when it made its public market debut in 2021.
