More Americans report that the coronavirus situation is getting worse following weeks of increasing hospital admissions, according to a new poll. Gallup found that 30% of people said that the pandemic was getting worse during a survey conducted Aug. 29-Sept. 5. CNN —Like many adults, a lot of teenagers don’t know what they want to do when they grow up. Even when they think they do, they may not have a realistic grasp of whether a given occupation or job is likely to be economically viable for them over time. After assessing all those elements, the role is assigned a CFI score — the higher the number, the more economically viable a job is. The gap between popular occupations and viable onesThe Gallup-Amazon report identifies, among other things, how wide the gap is between a given career’s economic viability score and how popular its ranking is among 15-year-olds. For instance, among jobs that largely employ people without a bachelor’s degree, 27 careers score at or above the average score for positions typically filled by college graduates.

Even with the unemployment rate tumbling to historic lows, nearly half (48%) of Americans say they have almost no confidence in Biden on the economy. Only 36% of Americans say they have confidence in Powell on the economy, a new low during Powell’s six-year tenure as Fed chief, while 28% say they have almost no confidence. The poll, taken April 3 to April 25, demonstrates how the anxiety caused by high inflation continues to overshadow the nation’s surprisingly strong job market. The economy added 253,000 jobs in April, dropping the unemployment rate to 3.4% — tied for the lowest since 1969. Gallup notes that confidence in leaders tends to rise and fall along with the fortunes of the economy.

Gallup’s Quarterly Workforce Indicator surveys consistently show that managers are a linchpin to employee engagement, retention, productivity and trust in leadership. As it turns out, effective training for managers is not a thing at many workplaces. “I would say 99% of employers don’t provide effective training — and I’m not exaggerating there,” said Ashley Herd, a former human resources executive who founded @ManagerMethod. In fact, how managers speak with employees — and how often — can go a long way to building employees’ trust and commitment, according to Gallup. Have that person then lead an internal training for managers and another one for employees about how to work with their managers.

The agency anticipates the new rules would mean EVs could also make up nearly half of all new medium-duty vehicles, like delivery trucks, by model year 2032. One expert told CNN the Biden administration’s proposal is a pivotal moment for the US auto industry and consumers. Six in 10 respondents said they believe EVs help the environment “only a little” or “not at all,” Gallup reported. “Folks who purchase electric vehicles will see a cost savings over the lifespan of the vehicle, because they’re not having to buy gas, having to pay for maintenance,” Regan said. That means much of the US car industry will already be transitioning ahead of the proposed federal rules.
