New York CNN —Tesla reported an increase in sales for the first time this year, although its year-to-date sales still trail the same period of 2023. But GM still had only a fraction of Tesla’s sales, with US EV sales coming in at 32,000 vehicles. Tesla doesn’t break out sales by market so it’s precise US sales are not known. During this latest quarter, Tesla stayed ahead of Chinese automaker BYD, which briefly passed Tesla in worldwide EV sales last year. BYD reported global third quarter battery electric sales of 313,000, and year-to-date sales of 1.2 million EVs.

A ‘harsh reality’ for EVsFord likes to brag about its growing EV sales, but its profit is still primarily coming from the sales of gasoline powered trucks and SUVs. Ford isn’t the only automaker pulling back on its EV plans and making new investment in ICE vehicles. This is not to say that the traditional automakers are dropping their EV plans altogether or that EV sales are falling. But EV sales, which initially grew at a double-digit pace, haven’t shot up exponentially as automakers hoped or expected. Those more concerned with the climate crisis are asking a bigger question: what does this all mean for the planet? Gas-powered cars, hybrids and EVs all emit roughly the same amount of pollution to manufacture, until you get to producing the battery. Fully electric cars use large batteries made of materials that require heavy mining. And that would still mean less climate pollution on the road overall. And fully electric cars won’t be truly “green” until the energy that charges them comes from renewable sources, like wind and solar.

CNN —With temperatures bottoming out across the country, electric vehicle drivers are probably noticing their driving range plummeting. Tests by the consumer advocacy group Consumer Reports showed that EV driving range dropped by about 25% in highway cruising, on average, in sub-freezing weather, compared to days with warmer outside temperatures. There are two main reasons for the drop in driving range, or how far the car can go before recharging: The battery, and the driver. That means driving range is reduced. “If you’re in cold weather, it’s actually going to activate the thermal management to heat up that battery,” he said.

Since 1978, the CEO compensation among America’s 300 biggest companies has gone up 1,460%, while the typical worker’s pay grew by just 18% (both adjusted for inflation), according to the Economic Policy Institute, a progressive think tank. Over the same period, CEO pay at the Big Three Detroit automakers — GM, Ford and Chrysler parent Stellantis — has jumped an average of 40%, or roughly how much of a raise striking workers are now demanding.
