CNN —The US men’s national soccer team (USMNT) booked its place in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals next year with a thrilling 4-2 win over Jamaica in St. Louis, Missouri, on Monday night. The victory secured a 5-2 aggregate win over the Reggae Boyz after a hard fought first leg in Jamaica finished 1-0 to the US last week. Mauricio Pochettino’s side opened up a 3-0 lead in the first half thanks to Christian Pulisic’s brace and Ricardo Pepi’s low strike from outside the box. The U.S. is one of few developed nations without federal laws that provide workers paid time off, and just over a dozen states have their own laws to offer paid sick leave. But last week, Americans in more states – Alaska, Missouri and Nebraska – voted to pass new ballot measures that will bring paid sick leave requirements to their workplaces in 2025. Prior to the November election, 15 states and Washington, D.C., had their own paid sick leave laws, as do a number of cities and localities across the country. CNN —The Kansas City Chiefs pulled off another unlikely victory on Sunday, blocking a 35-yard field goal attempt by Denver Broncos kicker Wil Lutz as time expired, to win 16-14 and improve to an undefeated 9-0 record this season. However, the Chiefs’ defense came up clutch when the team needed it the most, as Leo Chenal, among a bevy of Kansas City defenders, broke through to get an arm on the ball for the game-sealing block. Newsom is far from the only Democratic governor preparing to take on Trump. In blue states like Illinois, Massachusetts and New York, officials are already vowing to mount legal and policy fights against the incoming Trump administration on issues like abortion rights, environmental regulations, gun control, immigration enforcement and more. But the second Trump era will offer Democratic officials opportunities to showcase their own leadership as they position themselves for potential future runs. A less combative toneSome Democratic governors, including those widely seen as potential 2028 presidential contenders, did not immediately take aim at Trump’s incoming administration. “Finally, let’s root for the success of the new administration and keep working together to get things done.”Pennsylvania Gov.

While crisis pregnancy centers’ pattern of locating near abortion facilities is well documented, the new research, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Medical Internet Research, maps women’s geographic access to both crisis pregnancy centers and abortion facilities. The new study found that in 2021, crisis pregnancy centers outnumbered abortion clinics 3-to-1 in the U.S., but acknowledged that the figure is probably greater now post-Dobbs. On average, the distance between crisis pregnancy centers and abortion facilities in the U.S. was 5.5 miles. Abortion clinics offer other health careAbortion-rights advocates say that when communities lose abortion clinics, they also lose access to other health care services for women. Crisis pregnancy centers outnumber abortion clinics 9 to 1 in Texas, according to the crisis pregnancy center study.

Montana voters approved a ballot measure enshrining abortion in the state constitution, NBC News projects, delivering a victory to advocates for reproductive rights in a Western red state. The amendment will not change current law on abortion in Montana: Abortion is legal in the state until fetal viability, around the 23rd or 24th week of pregnancy, backed up by a 1999 ruling by the state Supreme Court. But advocates for the ballot measure wanted to guard against potential changes by the Legislature or state Supreme Court justices in the heavily Republican state. The measure also prevents the government from “penalizing patients, healthcare providers, or anyone who assists in exercising their right to make and carry out voluntary decisions about their pregnancy.”The ballot measure required a simple majority to pass. Nine other states considered constitutional amendments concerning abortion rights in this election: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New York and South Dakota.

Arizona voters on Tuesday approved an amendment enshrining abortion rights in the state constitution, NBC News projects. A fundamental right to abortion is part of the Arizona Constitution once and for all. In April, the conservative-leaning Arizona Supreme Court ruled to reinstate a near-total ban on abortion from 1864. Arizona for Abortion Access, the coalition of reproductive rights organizations behind the ballot effort, had shattered the record for the number of valid signatures gathered for a ballot initiative in the state. Constitutional amendments to enshrine abortion rights were on the general election ballots in nine other states Tuesday: Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New York and South Dakota.

Outside of the eight states with the ballot measures, certain cities and municipalities in three states, as well as Washington, D.C., have allowed noncitizens to vote in some local elections. Supporters of the ballot measures have argued that they are a way to get ahead of any potential problems related to noncitizen voting. Passage of the amendments marks the latest chapter of Republican's ongoing efforts to put unfounded claims of noncitizen voting at the center of a broader political strategy. Former President Donald Trump has long made false claims that noncitizen voting is resulting in widespread fraud and that Democrats have helped migrants enter the country to cast those ballots. The Republican National Committee’s election integrity campaign also highlighted noncitizen voting as a danger that it warned could be a source of widespread fraud in the 2024 election.

Pursuant to a 2013 Supreme Court decision, DOJ monitors only go inside polling places with the agreement of local officials, unless they have a court order. In their federal lawsuits, Missouri and Texas officials argued that their state laws did not permit federal officials to be present at polling places. Florida did not file a lawsuit, but Secretary of State Cord Byrd told the Justice Department in a letter Friday that state law does not allow DOJ officials in polling places. The DOJ was allowed to monitor polling places, he wrote, but was not allowed to send observers inside without a federal court order. Armed federal law enforcement officers are generally prohibited from entering polling places, which are secured by local law enforcement agencies.

ProPublica reported last week that two Texas women died after they faced delays in getting miscarriage care because of the state’s abortion ban. ProPublica’s coverage in September linked two deaths to Georgia’s abortion ban. “The nature of the strict abortion ban in Texas does not allow us as medical professionals to do our jobs,” they wrote. ArizonaThe Arizona Abortion Access Act would enshrine the right to an abortion in the state constitution up to fetal viability, around 22 to 24 weeks into pregnancy. Abortion rights supporters say the moment served as a stark reminder of what could come if reproductive rights aren’t enshrined in the state constitution. ColoradoThe Colorado Right to Abortion and Health Insurance Coverage Initiative would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution and approve the use of public funds for abortion. In Nevada, an amendment must be passed in two successive general elections before it can be added to the state constitution. While proponents have focused on abortion rights, opponents have used the measure’s broad nature to raise concerns about transgender and parental issues.

AP —Orlando Harris’ family pleaded with Missouri police to confiscate the 19-year-old’s bullet-proof vest, ammunition and AR-15-style rifle. The following August he met with a Washington University psychiatry resident, telling her he thought about shooting people at his old school. Harris’ family grew more concerned on October 15, when two packages from gun and ammunition suppliers arrived. She later drove her brother to a storage facility, which was about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the high school. She told police she “knew something was going to happen.”On October 24, shots rang out as Harris entered his former high school.
