DOHA, Qatar—The chief brokers of the Israel-Hamas hostage-prisoner exchange are pushing the two sides to prolong the truce in Gaza beyond the current two-day extension and start talks that would end the war, Egyptian and Qatari officials said. On Tuesday, Hamas released 12 hostages, including 10 Israelis, as part of the current extension of the truce with Israel. The hostages have arrived in Israel, according to Israeli and Egyptian officials.

India airlifted a high-powered drilling machine to assist in the rescue of dozens of road workers trapped underground. “The vertical drilling will disturb the rock formation and will cause vibrations to the mountain,” said Sundriyal, who is considered an expert in local rock formations. “However, it is difficult to say which one of the two methods would help us reach the trapped workers first,” he told reporters Monday. But for most of the families of the trapped men, the wait has been an agonizing switch between hope and despair. One of the trapped workers can be seen on camera.

Despite the seeming rush to shop, this Black Friday ushered in moderately higher promotions over last year and mixed in-store traffic, according to some Wall Street analysts. Black Friday winners Value-focused shopping destinations seemed to win big Friday, based on annual store checks from a slew of Wall Street shops. The Black Friday shopping extravaganza also ushered in some bullish sentiment toward Shopify . Black Friday losers Not every popular retailer seemed to kick off the holiday shopping period on a strong note. While Lululemon drove strong in-store traffic, helped in part by advertising use in Black Friday markdowns, Nike and Under Armour both showed higher promotions, said Piper Sandler's Abbie Zvejnieks.

Hong Kong CNN —A Kashmir journalist who was arrested under India’s sedition and anti-terror laws has returned home Thursday after being released on bail following nearly two years behind bars. Critics say Shah’s case highlights declining press freedoms in the contested region. Claimed in its entirety by both India and Pakistan, the mountainous Kashmir region has been at the epicenter of an often-violent territorial struggle between the nuclear-armed neighbors for more than 70 years. On Monday, the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court ordered his release and quashed some of the charges, according to a court document seen by CNN. “The arrest of Fahad Shah shows Jammu and Kashmir authorities’ utter disregard for press freedom and the fundamental right of journalists to report freely and safely,” said Steven Butler, Committee to Protect Journalists’ Asia program, at the time.

US pension plans lose bid to block cum-ex tax fraud case
  + stars: | 2023-11-21 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
COPENHAGEN, Nov 21 (Reuters) - A group of U.S. pension plans has lost a bid to block Denmark's tax agency from pursuing millions of dollars from them in a "cum-ex" tax fraud case after a judge in a New York district court ruled the trial could proceed. Danish tax agency in 2018 filed civil lawsuits in federal district courts across the United States, accusing more than 100 retirement and pension plans of inflating the size of their Danish stock holdings in order to obtain higher tax refunds. In a bellwether trial in the New York court to help anticipate the results of future similar cases, the judge rejected arguments brought by seven defendants, meaning the Danish tax authority can proceed with its case. The second bellwether defendant group is the Solo group, which includes five U.S.-based pension plans, a lawyer, two trusts and their trustees. The Danish tax agency claims that British hedge fund trader Sanjay Shah masterminded a fraudulent scheme that involved submitting wrongful applications for dividend tax refunds on behalf of investors and companies around the world between 2012 and 2015.

The Israeli military Wednesday said its troops came under fire outside Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest, as they entered part of the medical complex Israel says Hamas militants are operating from. A senior Israeli military official said Israeli soldiers killed four militants during the firefight on their way into the hospital and had found weapons inside, adding that they saw “concrete evidence” that Hamas militants were operating there.

Israeli soldiers moved into Gaza’s largest hospital, Al-Shifa, on Wednesday, searching buildings and questioning Palestinians sheltering there in an operation that carries high stakes for both sides of the war. The Israeli offensive has faced international criticism for the killing of civilians and destruction of infrastructure in the Gaza Strip. Israel contends the hospital compound sits atop underground complexes and a command center used by militants, a claim endorsed by the U.S. Hamas denies those claims.

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson did not say that a woman’s duties include giving birth to able-bodied workers, according to his spokesperson, despite posts online sharing the quote. The quote attributed to Johnson in a post on Instagram (archived), reads: “Every Woman has a duty to birth at least one able-bodied worker.” A similar quote was shared on Facebook (archived). In a May 2022 House Judiciary Committee hearing, Johnson did suggest that abortion deprives the national economy of potential “able-bodied workers”, during a discussion of the Supreme Court’s anticipated overturning of Roe v. Wade. We’re all struggling here to cover the bases of Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid and all the rest. U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson has previously suggested that millions of able-bodied workers were lost to the economy due to abortion, but has not stated publicly that a woman’s duty is to give birth to able-bodied workers.

Regulators have so far not mandated any minimum net worth or investor qualifications for those trading stock options, and the stock markets almost always rise each year - both recipes for higher risk-taking and complacency. The "stark" increase in daily options trading turnover raises issues of investor protection, said Ajay Tyagi, former SEBI chief. The platform has seen an uptick in futures and options trading activity, Zerodha said in response to Reuters queries. Sirul was arrested on an Interpol notice and has been held in an Australian immigration detention centre since January 2015, after fleeing Malaysia shortly before the verdict was handed down. Malaysia's top police official Razarudin Husain confirmed news of Sirul's release from Australian detention and said police would discuss with the Attorney-General and the courts the possibility of seeking extradition. Financial markets have been engaged in a growing debate over the risks that lurk in Treasurys, with prominent voices raising doubts. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn March, a Richard Bernstein Advisors note said spreads on credit default swaps have climbed for Treasurys since since 2011, when the federal government was issued its first credit downgrade. Then came this spring's debt-ceiling drama and the US credit downgrade in August from Fitch, which cited the rising debt burden and political dysfunction. If a downgrade follows, then US debt wouldn't be in the safest category for default risk at any of the three major ratings agencies. Several auctions for long-dated Treasurys have seen weak demand, and buyers are demanding higher compensation for the risk of carrying Treasurys.
