LAS VEGAS (AP) — The labor union representing tens of thousands of Las Vegas hospitality workers announced Wednesday that it had reached a tentative deal with casino giant Caesars Entertainment, a major breakthrough that could help avert an unprecedented strike at more than a dozen hotel-casinos on the Las Vegas Strip. A walkout could still happen if deals aren't reached by 5 a.m. Friday with MGM Resorts International and Wynn Resorts. Negotiations with MGM Resorts were scheduled for Wednesday and Wynn Resorts on Thursday. It would also follow hospitality workers walking off the job last month at Detroit’s three casinos, including MGM Grand Detroit. That includes the Bellagio, Paris Las Vegas and MGM Grand.

Although Asian and European stocks fell back a bit, Wall St stock futures were unchanged before the bell. Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on November 02, 2023 in New York City. U.S. stock futures were flat on Tuesday night after the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite notched their longest winning streaks in about two years. Futures tied to the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures oscillated near the flat line. Earlier in the day, the S&P 500 added 0.3% to clinch its seventh straight positive session. These gains come after about 80% of S&P 500 companies have beaten earnings estimates this season, while slowing demand means that only 59% have also topped revenue expectations.

We'll touch on Berkshire Hathaway's weekend report, review some interesting companies reporting in the week ahead and then analyze a curious call spread in Disney ahead of earnings. Our thinking, and the options sentiment suggested, that earnings might be the catalyst for a turnaround. It seems at least one institutional options trader thinks that earnings might be the catalyst for an upside move in the name. With Disney trading around $85 a share, apparently someone is willing to bet a small percentage of the current stock price that the stock could pop well over 10% post-earnings — something that hasn't happened since their August 2022 earnings release. BEFORE MAKING ANY FINANCIAL DECISIONS, YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR OWN FINANCIAL OR INVESTMENT ADVISOR.

The job market or spending? The spending argument: But there have been instances in which spending weakened before the job market. “I think it starts with the perception of the labor market,” Drew Matus, chief market strategist at MetLife Investment Management, told CNN. The ticket-industry giant said it has sold a record 140 million tickets so far this year, up 17% year-over-year and has already surpassed the 121 million tickets sold in all of 2022. In the third quarter, Ticketmaster sales surged 57% to $833 million and 90 million fee-bearing tickets were sold in the period.

Moscow will have to weigh how to best protect its vulnerable targets without limiting their usage. "If these helicopters are now pulled out of ATACMS range entirely, this will significantly limit the amount of time they can be deployed in front line action," he said. Alternatively, as it has done in other situations, Moscow may push vulnerable assets to locations beyond the range of Ukraine's ATACMS. "We allege that, for years, SolarWinds and Brown ignored repeated red flags about SolarWinds' cyber risks, which were well known throughout the company," SEC enforcement director Gurbir Grewal said in a press release. SolarWinds went public in 2018, and made only "generic" disclosures about cybersecurity risk in both its prospectus and in continued filings, the complaint said. However, the SEC alleged that SolarWinds and Brown knew that the company's cybersecurity practices were weak, pointing to an internal presentation from Brown that was made the same month SolarWinds went public. It appears to be one of the first times the SEC has alleged a company misled and defrauded investors over cybersecurity risks. In reality, Brown knew that the company was not following those best practices, the SEC alleged.

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSAN FRANCISCO, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Forty countries in a U.S.-led alliance plan to sign a pledge never to pay ransom to cybercriminals and to work toward eliminating the hackers' funding mechanism, a senior White House official said on Tuesday. The International Counter Ransomware Initiative comes as the number of ransomware attacks grows worldwide. In ransomware attacks, hackers encrypt an organization's systems and demand ransom payments in exchange for unlocking them. Partner countries will share a "black list" through the U.S. Department of Treasury that will include information on digital wallets being used to move ransomware payments, Neuberger said.

On a chilly Wednesday evening in October, the sounds filling Ambre Romero’s home were familiar: her grandchildren unloading the dishwasher, her husband, just off work, watching television. Ms. Romero was getting ready for her shift serving cocktails at the MGM Grand Detroit, the casino where she has worked since 1999. Ms. Romero, who has long reddish-brown hair and a wry smile, enjoys the predictability of her nights. The work is unceasingly social, which is just how Ms. Romero likes it; she’s a former dancer who turned to cocktail serving because it felt like performing. But Ms. Romero, like so many millions of Americans, has seen her job remade in recent years by the arrival of new technologies automating parts of her work.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Thousands of hotel workers fighting for new union contracts rallied on the Las Vegas Strip on Wednesday evening, halting rush-hour traffic before dozens were arrested for sitting in the street. Las Vegas police said 58 people were cited for assembling to disturb the peace, a misdemeanor. Leaders of the Culinary Workers Union said they wanted a show of force ahead of any potential strike. As the protest began, Kimberly Dopler, a cocktail server at Wynn Las Vegas since it opened in 2005, said she planned to halt traffic. A Las Vegas strike deadline has not yet been set as the union and casino companies return to the bargaining table this week.

A land warfare expert said even if Kyiv can't break enemy lines, it can still cause pain for Russian forces. But even if Kyiv's forces aren't necessarily able to break through the enemy lines, they could still inflict significant damage on Moscow's army throughout the winter, a land warfare expert says. The key could be drawing out Russian forces into the cold by pushing into opportunities rather than attempting to batter their defenses.
