Michael Chow Photo: HBOAmong his many talents, the celebrity restaurateur Michael Chow , the subject of “AKA Mr. Chow,” has the seemingly savant-ish ability to recall the first shot of any movie he’s seen. “Why are first scenes so important?” asks director Nick Hooker . “Is your birth important?” asks Mr. Chow. AKA Mr. Chow Sunday, 9 p.m., HBOA film-critic colleague once observed, or conceded, that few movies get any better after the first five minutes. Over the great operatic journey that is Mr. Chow’s life, can anything top the overture performed by this supremely self-confident, mildly abrasive, quasi-pugnacious but likable impresario-artist-actor and feeder of the elite?

Stewart informed staff Thursday that he and Apple executives agreed to part ways, according to multiple show staff members with whom Stewart discussed the matter. China worriesChina represents nearly a fifth of Apple’s sales and is the company’s fastest-growing region by far. Apple’s sales in China increased 8% between April and June (the most recent quarter for which Apple has reported its financial statement), while sales fell 6% in the Americas region during that same period. So a potentially critical look at China on Stewart’s show, streamed by Apple, may not have sat well with the consumers and officials Cook is hoping will help boost Apple’s bottom line in the region. But in its most recent season, Stewart started capturing more attention for his show, particularly in clips online, some of which went viral.

Jon Stewart’s show on Apple’s streaming service is abruptly coming to an end, according to several people with knowledge of the decision, the result of creative differences between the tech giant and the former “Daily Show” host. Mr. Stewart and Apple executives decided to part ways in recent days, two of the people said. The Apple show, “The Problem With Jon Stewart,” debuted to some fanfare two years ago as Mr. Stewart’s return to the talk show format after a six-year hiatus. But Mr. Stewart and Apple executives had disagreements over some of the topics and guests on “The Problem,” two of the people said. Mr. Stewart told members of his staff on Thursday that potential show topics related to China and artificial intelligence were causing concern among Apple executives, a person with knowledge of the meeting said.

‘Rick and Morty’ reveals its new voice actors

It was more of the same, save for two major changes: the voices of Rick and Morty themselves. Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden provide the new voices of Rick and Morty, respectively. They replace Justin Roiland, series co-creator and voice of both Rick and Morty (as well as several supporting characters), who departed the show in January following since-dropped charges of domestic violence. Adult Swim didn’t reveal the new actors’ identities until minutes into Sunday’s episode. “Rick and Morty” has been a mega-hit for Adult Swim over its acclaimed run, which began in 2013.

It’s hot in there and we’re not just talking about the steam in the showers, though there’s a lot of that, too. A naval base in real life, it has a picturesque location on a pier; the show’s Italian title, “Mare Fuori,” translates more literally to “The Sea Outside,” as in the sea outside the prison windows. Italian viewers are getting ready for Season 4, whose filming was occasionally interrupted by the screams of fans clustered outside the prison gates. Based on the first season, it is easy enough to understand the impact of “The Sea Beyond” on T-shirt sales and young heart rates. Its heart is pure soap opera, and the writing and direction do not aspire to more.

Drivers in Los Angeles heading north on La Cienega Boulevard these days might notice a bronzed gentleman smiling down at them from billboards poised on either side of the street. But as one of the billboards explains, those were not the qualifications that led to his becoming the star of the newest “Bachelor” spinoff. He’s 72.”The appraisal was taken from a recent headline about Turner, who as the first “Golden Bachelor” is the center of a new spin on the franchise that features singles 60 and older. “This is certainly the first time in a ‘Bachelor’ campaign that we used a quote from AARP in our billboards,” said Shannon Ryan, who oversees the show’s marketing.

NEW YORK (AP) — Drew Barrymore, who drew criticism for taping new episodes of her daytime talk show despite the ongoing writers and actors strikes, now says she'll wait until the labor issues are resolved. “I have listened to everyone, and I am making the decision to pause the show’s premiere until the strike is over,” Barrymore posted on Instagram on Sunday. Ariel Dumas, head writer and supervising producer for “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” reacted on X, formerly Twitter: “This is really great,” she wrote, saying "The Drew Barrymore Show” “decided to do the right thing. That’s because talk shows are covered under a separate contract — the so-called Network Code — from the one actors and writers are striking. The Network Code also covers reality TV, sports, morning news shows, soap operas and game shows.

CNN —Drew Barrymore announced on Sunday that she will pause the premiere of her talk show after receiving backlash over her decision to resume production as more than 11,000 television and film writers remain on strike. Barrymore’s statement comes after a turbulent week for the actress and TV host, who faced criticism from the Writers Guild of America (WGA) after defending her decision to resume production without WGA writers amidst the ongoing dual strikes in Hollywood. In a statement shared on Instagram earlier this month, Barrymore explained her position about bringing her show back. “The Guild has, and will continue to, picket struck shows that are in production during the strike. In response to that criticism, the show said the negative comments were surprising. This time around, “Your Face Sounds Familiar,” which is in its 19th season, has not yet publicly responded. The show’s Instagram account indicates that multiple contestants have dressed in blackface to perform as Black singers, including Snoop Dogg, Ray Charles, Bill Withers and Missy Elliott. She said the continued use of blackface on the show might be because the stigma surrounding it is smaller in Poland, which has a population that is overwhelmingly white, than it is in the United States. About 97 percent of Poland’s population identifies as ethnically Polish, according to Minority Rights Group International.

The network said that the show would be returning on Sept. 18 without written material that is “covered by the W.G.A. strike,” a similar approach to that taken by “The View,” which began airing episodes from its new season this month, circumventing union writers. Barrymore, who had stepped down as the host of the MTV Movie and TV Awards in May in solidarity with the striking Hollywood writers, was greeted by a wave of critical backlash online after the decision to go back on air. Representatives for Barrymore and her show did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Explore How Income Influences Attendance at 139 Top CollegesAt many selective private colleges, being very rich is a door to entry — students with parents earning in the top 1 percent attend at much higher rates than other similarly qualified students, new data shows. The data is available for 139 colleges, including the top private colleges according to Barron’s and many of the top public and private colleges in U.S. News & World Report. The researchers also had access to internal admissions data for several of the most elite private colleges. In much of the next tier of elite private colleges, rich students have a similar advantage. Even though college attendance rises with parental income, when it comes to educating the majority of America’s four-year college students, public universities play a vital role — regardless of how much their parents make.

“I always say that if there were a marble Olympics, our team would definitely take the gold,” Bob Shaw bragged. The scenic artists of “The Gilded Age” can paint a half-dozen distinct marble varieties. To pause at nearly any frame of the show is to marvel at the meticulous mix of authentic materials and brilliant fakes. Look closely at the candelabras, for example: They are fitted with fire-safe LEDs hooked to wavering filaments that substitute for open flame. Though production design is often seen as a mere backdrop to the action, the scenery, furnishings, finishes and props have their own stories to tell.
