Building collapse in Havana kills at least one, others trapped
  + stars: | 2023-10-04 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
HAVANA, Oct 4 (Reuters) - A building partially collapsed in the Cuban capital Havana on Tuesday night, killing at least one person and leaving at least two others trapped beneath the rubble, the municipal government said. The collapse in the Old Havana tourist district gutted the insides of the decrepit building that was home to 13 families and 54 people. It wrenched terraces off its facade and trapped many people beneath piles of rubble and rebar. One person had been killed and two others were hospitalized in critical condition, the municipal government said in a statement. The building collapse is the latest in a series of disasters that have beset crisis-racked Cuba, including a gas explosion that destroyed Havana´s Saratoga Hotel in 2022 and a massive tank farm fire in Matanzas, an hour east of the capital, several months later.

Dummy tanks have been used since WWI and were used to great effect during WWII. High-tech equipment makes it hard for even the best inflatable tanks to work. AdvertisementAdvertisementRecent videos appear to show inflatable tank decoys being used on the battlefield in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. A drone spotted a cluster of tanks in a forest, but a tank spotted away from the trees shattered the facade. The cluster of tanks turned out to be a group of inflatable decoys, a military tactic used in an attempt to get the enemy to waste ammunition.

REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 3 (Reuters) - General Motors Co's (GM.N) third-quarter U.S. auto sales jumped about 21%, the company said on Tuesday, fueled by improved supply and sustained demand for its SUVs and pickup trucks. The Detroit automaker's quarterly sales rose to 674,336 vehicles, from 555,580 vehicles a year earlier. Rival Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) reported a 12.2% rise in third-quarter U.S. auto sales. While it did not address the impact of the latest strike, a 40-day UAW strike in 2019 led to a 6% fall in sales in the fourth quarter of that year and cost the automaker $3.6 billion.

What could break under higher-for-longer interest rates?

Yet, the strain from interest rate hikes has just started to come through and with central banks signalling that rates will likely stay higher for longer, the notion of something "breaking" remains strong. Reuters Graphics Reuters Graphics1/ PROPERTY PAINNowhere is the impact of higher rates being felt more acutely than in real estate, still reeling from COVID-19. "We have many zombie companies in the United States and Europe from the low interest rates era, and I cannot imagine how they can survive now with high interest rates." Still, big question marks remain over their future, not least from a global property rout. Patients with private health insurance aren't likely to see a drop in costs from the negotiations. Longo said the price-setting provisions will drive research and investment away from treatment options for Medicare patients. If drug companies won't come to the negotiating table to lower drug prices paid by private insurers, those insurers could take the companies' drugs off their lists of covered medications. Or, if private insurance companies don't negotiate drug prices down for their patients, patients in some cases could seek out different insurance. "These are not full solutions, but they are the beginning of cracks in the facade" of drug companies' constant price hikes, Feldman said.

But Motil's self-described success was an elaborate façade, according to regulatory filings and Ohio bankruptcy proceedings. In a 29-page complaint, the SEC laid out how Motil issued "promissory notes" fully collateralized by property across Ohio to dozens of investors. "Nearly everything about his scheme was a lie," the financial regulator's complaint read. In one instance, according to the SEC, Motil managed to get more than $1 million from 20 different investors for just one single-family home valued at no more than $130,000. Motil and his wife, Amy, profited handsomely from the scheme, the SEC alleged.
