Matriculation day marks the beginning of the knobs' seven-month journey to joining the South Carolina Corps of Cadets at the Citadel, one of the oldest public senior military colleges in the US, which has been at the center of controversy for decades because of allegations of racism, sexism, and hazing and its historical ties to the Confederacy. After saying goodbye to their families, the knobs encounter a group of upperclassmen tasked with leading the new class during matriculation. Despite the school's complicated past, we saw some cadets making progress toward changing the Citadel's culture in real time.

Hopkins pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder last week in an unannounced hearing more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) from where the shootings took place. He kept shooting as more officers rushed to the scene to save their comrades, investigators said. Rescuers had to wait for an armored vehicle so they could get close enough to try to save the wounded officers. Hopkins', 33-year-old Seth Hopkins, pleaded guilty in 2019 to second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor and is serving 20 years in prison. Reporters were not told of the hearing where Hopkins pleaded guilty, although the families of the victims and the police agencies were notified.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia has benefited from waiting to reveal where he stands as the swing vote in a chamber closely divided between Democrats and Republicans. During a multi-day trip to West Virginia's capital this week, the 76-year-old expressed growing frustration with the polarized U.S. two-party system. He managed to win reelection in 2018 in one of former President Donald Trump's most loyal states as the last of his party to hold statewide office in now-deep red West Virginia. Still, Justice has a high approval rating in West Virginia, making him a formidable opponent for any candidate. Murdaugh will admit in federal court that he committed 22 counts of financial fraud and money laundering, his attorneys said in court papers filed this week.
