LONDON, July 8 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden will arrive in Britain on Sunday for a brief visit during which he will meet British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and discuss climate change issues with King Charles ahead of the upcoming NATO summit. Sunak's spokesperson said their discussions would likely include the upcoming NATO summit and Ukraine. The president and the king are due to discuss climate issues, a subject on which Charles, 74, has campaigned and spoken out about for more than five decades. When the two men met at the COP26 U.N. climate summit in Scotland two years ago, Biden praised Charles' leadership on the subject, telling him "We need you badly". Following the meeting, Biden and Sunak leave Britain for Lithuania where NATO leaders will gather for a key summit.

Jake Sullivan, Biden's national security adviser, said Ukraine will not be voted into NATO membership at the summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, but he encouraged Ukraine's President Volodomyr Zelenskiy to attend to discuss the matter. Also topping Biden's agenda in Vilnius will be Sweden, whose accession into NATO has been blocked by Turkey. Sullivan said Sweden will eventually gain NATO membership despite Turkey's opposition. He said Biden will discuss Sweden with Erdogan at some point during the summit but did not know the format for the talks. July 5 (Reuters) - Stellantis-LG Energy Solution (LGES) (STLAM.MI) will resume construction of an electric-vehicle battery plant in Canada after the federal government and province of Ontario increased subsidies for the C$5 billion ($3.7 billion) project. The companies said on Wednesday battery production at the plant in the city of Windsor in Ontario was now set to begin in 2024, creating some 2,500 new jobs and targeting annual production capacity over 45 gigawatt hours. Stellantis and LGES first announced their battery plant investment in March last year, but tensions emerged a few months later in August when the U.S. passed the IRA, which includes a massive package of clean-tech incentives for companies. In April, Canada agreed to provide up to C$13 billion in manufacturing tax credits and a C$700 million grant to lure German automaker Volkswagen AG to build its North American battery plant in the country. It was the biggest single investment ever in Canada's EV supply chain.

LONDON, June 29 (Reuters) - Soaring inflation has hit the finances of the British royals, pushing up expenditure, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday, as it revealed King Charles had ordered the heating in royal homes to be turned down to cut emissions. The report said 1.6 million pounds ($2 million) had been spent by the royals on the queen's funeral and related events. The British government said in May it had cost an estimated 162 million pounds overall, which includes the cost of policing and security. He said gas and heating emissions had fallen 19%, partly driven by the king having the thermostats turned down, and a 43% decrease in travel emissions. "The royals have long hidden their true cost, which we have worked out to be at least 345 million pounds.

CNN —Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, has undergone surgery after being diagnosed with breast cancer, she revealed in an episode of her “Tea Talks” podcast released Monday. During the podcast, which was recorded last week before her surgery, Ferguson said, “Tomorrow I’m going in for a mastectomy.”“I want every single person who is listening to this podcast to go get checked, go get screened, and go do it,” Ferguson said. According to PA, a spokesman for the duchess said: “Sarah, Duchess of York was recently diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer detected at a routine mammogram screening.”“She was advised she needed to undergo surgery which has taken place successfully,” according to PA.“The duchess is receiving the best medical care and her doctors have told her that the prognosis is good. They then also rejected a revised deal, the Windsor Framework, reached last February. The British government is in talks with the DUP on restoring the power-sharing system but Northern Ireland minister Chris Heaton-Harris declined to be drawn on the details of how those talks were going. As we shifted to indoor city life, outbreaks and pandemics whipped through society with alarming regularity. The viral story about New York veterans getting kicked out of a New York hotel was a hoax, the Mid Hudson News reported. Seven homeless men say they were part of a group of 15 who were supposed to act as vets to keep up the scheme. On May 12, the New York Post first reported that 20 homeless veterans were forced out of the Crossroads Hotel in Newburgh to make room for migrants the federal government was sending to New York. A graphics expert who works at the Mid Hudson News noticed the receipt appeared to have been doctored. The job came with a promise of $200 in addition to food and alcohol, Mid Hudson News reported.

LONDON — The state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II cost the U.K. government around £162 million ($201.4 million), the Treasury said on Thursday. The U.K.'s longest-serving monarch died on Sept. 8, 2022, aged 96, at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. A 10-day period of national mourning, during which most businesses and workplaces remained open but many events were canceled, was held ahead of her funeral in Westminster Abbey on Sept. 18. An estimated 250,000 members of the public saw the British queen lying in state in London during the mourning period, with many queuing in the streets of London for more than 24 hours. She was buried at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle, Berkshire.

Britain's EU exit largely severed its financial sector's previously unfettered access to the bloc, raising concerns over London's role as a global financial centre. As part of Brexit terms, the EU agreed to formalise cooperation between financial watchdogs. The MoU will create a joint EU-UK Financial Regulatory Forum, similar to one the EU already has with the United States. Joanna Penn, treasury minister in the UK parliament's upper house, welcomed the "positive move" given how EU and UK financial markets are deeply interconnected. The EU has granted 'equivalence' or EU market access to derivatives clearing houses in London until the end of June 2025.
