Jenny Craig is being revived online
  + stars: | 2023-07-05 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —Weight loss brand Jenny Craig is getting a second lease on life. Jenny Craig went bust in May after more than 40 years in business because of growing competition from trendy diets and weight loss drugs like Ozempic. One major change is that Jenny Craig’s weight loss centers won’t be reopened, and the company will live entirely online. Jenny Craig was one of the pioneers of weight loss and diet programs. Named after its founder, the Jenny Craig business started when she couldn’t lose weight after giving birth to her second child.

The Supreme Court struck down affirmative action policies at Harvard and UNC. Thomas said he's aware of the obstacles faced by 'my race,' but ruled affirmative action was discriminatory. Thomas declared "the Constitution prevails" in his opinion as the Supreme Court effectively outlawed affirmative action at US colleges and universities. In a 6-3 decision, the high court ruled that policies at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina were unconstitutional. Thomas then wrote affirmative action is also discrimination, calling the policies "rudderless, race-based preferences designed to ensure a particular racial mix in" Harvard and UNC's "entering classes."

Not long after Hannah Pick-Goslar’s family relocated from Berlin to Amsterdam in 1933, her mother made a friend at the grocery store — a fellow Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany who was accompanied by a dark-eyed girl around Pick-Goslar’s age. “Anne had trouble whistling, so sometimes she’d just hum the tune,” according to Pick-Goslar’s best-selling memoir, “My Friend Anne Frank,” written with Dina Kraft and published on June 6, six days before what would have been the diarist’s 94th birthday. The teenagers last saw each other from opposite sides of a barbed-wire fence at Bergen-Belsen in 1945. “As she began to fade, I wrote of her life,” Kraft explains in an afterword to their book, which is based on hundreds of hours of interviews conducted in person and via Zoom. “The Harvard and UNC admissions programs cannot be reconciled with the guarantees of the Equal Protection Clause. We have never permitted admissions programs to work in that way, and we will not do so today,” Roberts wrote. During oral arguments, Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar stressed the unique interests of the military and argued that race-based admissions programs further the nation’s compelling interest of diversity. Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law, said the decision will still not end the legal fight over college admissions. The Supreme Court stepped in to consider the case before it was heard by a federal appeals court.

In the latest blow to Reddit after its controversial billing changes, the makers of Minecraft — one of the best-selling video games of all time — have quit the platform. "Reddit management introduced changes recently that have led to rule and moderation changes across many subreddits," a tech lead at Mojang Studios, the Microsoft-owned company behind Minecraft, posted on the r/Minecraft Reddit community Tuesday. "Because of these changes, we no longer feel that Reddit is an appropriate place to post official content or refer our players to." An update to the post clarified that it is not an official policy for all of Mojang Studios, Xbox or Microsoft. The protests included the wildly popular r/Funny, with more than 40 million members, along with r/Music and r/Science, each boasting more than 30 million users.

Washington CNN —The Supreme Court’s landmark ruling Thursday on affirmative action pitted its two Black justices against each other, with the ideologically opposed jurists employing unusually sharp language attacking each other by name. Justice Clarence Thomas and the court’s other four conservatives joined Roberts’ opinion. Thomas has previously acknowledged that he made it to Yale Law School because of affirmative action, but he has long criticized such policies. (While Jackson recused herself from the Harvard case, she did hear the UNC case, and her dissent was focused on the latter.) In his memoir, “My Grandfather’s Son,” Thomas says he felt “tricked” by paternalistic Whites at Yale who recruited Black students.

Pixdeluxe | E+ | Getty ImagesAmericans often worry about hitting specific money goals for retirement, but a new report finds that the decision to retire often happens independently of reaching that "magic number." The report found that more than a third, 36%, of households ages 55 to 64 are already retired. In that age group, 27% are within five years of stopping full-time work and 37% expect to continue working full-time for more than five years. About a third, 35%, of people in that age group who have less than $50,000 in investable assets described themselves as retired. That may be especially true of those in the 55-plus age group, who may believe they have enough, but cannot predict whether they will live another four decades.

Americans on average have saved a fraction of what they think they'll need to "retire comfortably." A new study from Northwestern Mutual found that many age groups think they'll need over $1 million. People have saved 3% to 12% of their retirement goal, depending on which age group you look at. "At the end of the day, the 'magic number' for retirement savings and retirement age are personal for each of us," Kyle Menke, CEO of Menke Financial, a Northwestern Mutual firm, told Insider in an email. "It's clear that rising prices are impacting people's expectations for retirement savings," Menke said.

In Germany, this age group can vote in European elections, and the same goes for Belgium, on request. And, when Scotland held its referendum on Scottish independence back in 2014, it lowered the voting age from 18 to 16. In the US, some cities in the states of Maryland and California have lowered the voting age to 16 in certain local elections. The US-based NGO National Youth Rights Association argues that 16- and 17-year-olds should participate on decision making on medical autonomy, curfew, drinking age and age discrimination. “They work and are subject to taxation without representation: income tax, sales tax, payroll taxes and more… The US should continue its democratic tradition of extending voting rights,” he added.

Signage is displayed outside a permanently closed Bed Bath & Beyond retail store in Hawthorne, California, on May 1, 2023. Bed Bath & Beyond will live on in name only after Overstock.com won an auction for the failed home goods retailer's intellectual property and digital assets, according to court records filed early Thursday. In a rare move, Bed Bath chose to run a separate sale process for its Buy Buy Baby chain, considered the crown jewel of its assets. Buy Buy Baby assets garnered interest from buyers even before Bed Bath filed for bankruptcy in April. The auction for Buy Buy Baby's assets is slated to take place on Wednesday.

For the first time in generations, the PGA Tour was not the unrivaled signature show in American men’s golf. How might players who defected from the tour to LIV be allowed to return? And what about all of that money, said to be $100 million or more in some instances, that the wealth fund promised LIV golfers? Much about the framework agreement, though, is unclear, with bankers and lawyers still rushing to fill in blanks on matters as weighty as asset valuation. (“I don’t have enough information about the deal yet to have an unfavorable or favorable view about it,” Patrick Cantlay, a player who is on the PGA Tour’s board, said on Tuesday.)

Hadwin was quickly helped back to his feet, with footage showing him stood arm in arm with the security guard shortly after. A security guard stops Hadwin as Taylor celebrates. It put him level at the top of the leaderboard with England’s Tommy Fleetwood, in pursuit of a first PGA Tour title. That sent the pair into the first PGA Tour playoffs of their careers, and after three holes, they still could not be separated. A remarkable uphill putt saw Taylor eagle for the win to become the first Canadian since Pat Fletcher in 1954, and the sixth in history, to win his country’s National Open.

The town in the Zaporizhzhia region sits just five kilometers away from a frontline where Ukrainian forces have been making a recent push. “The town is shelled every 24 hours.”And with the Zaporizhzhia frontline becoming more active because of an anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive, aid deliveries may become more rare. The PGA Tour would remain a nonprofit organization and would retain full control over how its tournaments are played. After two years of sniping, lawsuits and ill will, the major men’s golf tours agreed to merge on Tuesday. The PGA Tour, which runs golf in North America; the PGA European Tour, which is known as the DP World Tour and holds events in much of the rest of the world; and the upstart LIV Tour agreed to merge their operations. The Saudi sovereign wealth fund, which spent billions to launch the LIV Tour, will invest in the new company, and the governor of that fund will become its chairman. The LIV Tour started last year and offered big-name players from the other tours huge sums to jump ship. Many players and officials of the PGA Tour were sharply critical of LIV, both for dividing the golf world and for associating with the Saudi government and its poor human rights record.
