A video showing a boat captain pulling parasites off a whale's head in a Mexican lagoon went viral. "People are going to get hurt because of that video," Bondy, told Insider in an interview. Bondy said that picking parasites like barnacles off a whale could hurt them because they have extremely thin and sensitive skin. "Whales, for thousands of years, have been surviving without people picking parasites off," she told Insider. Bondy is also worried that if tourists pick parasites from whales, the sea mammal could react aggressively toward them.

An entire pod of 55 pilot whales died on Sunday after a mass stranding on a beach in Scotland. The pod may have washed up on the beach because they wanted to help an injured female. An entire pod of 55 pilot whales died on Sunday morning after a mass stranding on a remote beach in Western Isles, Scotland, police said. Most of the whales died shortly after washing up in low-tide waters, although 15 of them were still breathing when rescue teams arrived on the beach. The incident is the "largest fatal mass stranding event we've had in Scotland for decades," the Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme said on Twitter on Sunday.

London CNN —A pod of more than 50 pilot whales has died after a mass stranding on a northwestern Scottish island, according to a marine charity on the ground. Pilot whales are sociable animals, so if one becomes stranded, experts believe others from the pod will follow and also become stranded. Known to be gregarious, pilot whales have “extremely strong social and emotional bonds with one another,” Jarvis told CNN. In the UK, the largest stranding of pilot whales was in Scotland in 2011, when 77 were found stuck on the country’s northerly shores, according to Jarvis. Tasmania’s largest stranding was in 2020, when more than 450 pilot whales were found.

More than 50 pilot whales died on Sunday after they were stranded along a beach on the Isle of Lewis in northwest Scotland. By the time responders arrived on the beach to administer first aid to the surviving whales, a majority were already dead, the charity added. The other whale restranded itself and subsequently died, British Divers Marine Life Rescue said. It can take a frantic effort to save a whale’s life after it is stranded. Pilot whales — which come from the same family as dolphins and porpoises — can grow to 24 feet in length and weigh up to 6,600 pounds.

With summer movie season at its midpoint, Hollywood typically begins to turn its gaze toward the fall, when a trio of major film festivals acts as the unofficial kickoff to Oscar season. That’s because SAG-AFTRA is prohibiting members from promoting any film while the strike is on, an across-the-board ban that includes interviews, photo calls and red-carpet duties. Without those appearances, festivals will be sapped of the star power that is invaluable to raising a film’s profile. The first event that will probably be affected is the Venice Film Festival, which begins its 80th edition on Aug. 30 with the premiere of the sexy tennis comedy “Challengers,” starring Zendaya. Venice has lately rivaled Cannes for glamour and headlines, so the loss of famous actors would be a big blow.

A dead 60-foot fin whale washed up on a shore in Ireland on Sunday. Experts near the dead whale, whose body washed on the beach on Sunday, noted that they heard "bubbling" when trying to cut into the whale to perform an animal autopsy. The IWDG later deemed the whale "not suitable for post-mortem examination" and abandoned it, according to a post on their site. According to the release, the Kerry city council intends to let the dead whale remain on site as it decomposes. Bloated, dead whales aren't uncommon though they can produce an unpleasant smell when they do happen.

Now gray whales in Baja California frequently interact with humans in a remarkable shift. The video showed a gray whale right beside a boat, allowing the captain to pick whale lice off its head. Still, the fact that the gray whales of the Baja lagoons interact with boats and humans at all baffles researchers. The gray whales then make the longest migration of any mammal, with most traveling more than 10,000 miles to their foraging grounds near Alaska. Hunting gray whales is illegal, with some exceptions for Indigenous peoples in Alaska, Canada, and Mexico.

Orcas are targeting boats near Spain while gray whales in Baja let humans pet them. "It isn't people running up to whales, it's whales coming to people." The gray whales befriending boats is especially interesting because just decades ago they were hunted to the brink of extinction in those same lagoons. But after conservation measures made whaling illegal, the North Pacific gray whales have dramatically recovered, allowing for these more friendly, social interactions between whales and humans. And it's not just the gray whales.

A Category 5 cyclone hit Western Australia the week we arrived. It was about 800 miles north of us, but on our first night, wind gusts tossed our R.V. A professor found a lump of ambergris, or "floating gold," worth 500,000 euros in a dead whale. The stone, which was worth 500,000 euros, or around $545,000, was made of ambergris — a strange, naturally-occurring substance that's known as "floating gold." It can be judged by the color of the ambergris, with black having the least ambrein and white the most. Top perfumes are usually made with white ambergris, while substitute chemicals are used in cheaper ones. In 2021, a group of fishermen in the Gulf of Aden sold a chunk of ambergris worth around $1.5 million to a buyer in the United Arab Emirates.

Grey whales in Mexico are approaching tourist boats to get help from humans, The Dodo reported. A video shows a whale-watching captain picking parasites off a whale's head as it spins around. The whale has repeatedly come to the captain to get its head picked, he told The Dodo. It shows a grey whale approaching the small tourist boat as the captain, identified as Paco Jimenez Franco, starts picking whale lice off its head. Speaking about his first one-on-one encounter with the whale, Franco said: "Once I removed the first one, she approached again so that I could continue to do so."

The protocol didn't seem to have an effect. "In very severe damage, when towing is required, we don't find significant evidence to follow or not follow our protocol," she said in the webinar. “We already think we’re teetering into a downturn, and this would just make things worse,” said Tony Stillo, director of economics for Canada at Oxford. The recent fires have left some lumber mills idle, for example, as workers have been evacuated. “It’s safe to say there’s going to be a supply crunch in Canada as we work through this,” Mr. Nighbor said. The tourism industry is also being hit, as the fires erupted just as operators were going into the crucial summer season — sometimes far from the fires. The road has since reopened, but only one lane at a time, and drivers need to wait up to an hour to get through.

Killer whales near the Iberian Peninsula have been striking boats since 2020. No doubt the encounters feel like attacks to the boaters, but experts say that may not be accurate. But in at least three cases the killer whales have managed to sink sailboats, prompting talk of an "orca uprising" in which the whales were finally fighting back. Despite one theory about a "traumatized" killer whale seeking revenge on boats, Trites and other experts have said they believe the orcas are most likely just playing. They appear to be picking up and mimicking the play behavior of other killer whales, suggesting it is being positively reinforced, or that they are getting pleasure or some sort of benefit from it.

Generally speaking, orcas in the wild do not pose a threat to humans. But the boat encounters are still dangerous, and swimming with a massive wild animal can be risky. Generally speaking, killer whales do not pose much of a threat to humans. The Iberian population members targeting boats also do not seem to be interested in humans, Strager noted. However, Strager said it's impossible to draw any conclusions about wild orcas based on the behavior of captive orcas, as they are in such an artificial environment.

Scientists believe the orca White Gladis was pregnant when she started ramming into boats in 2020. White Gladis later gave birth to her calf in 2021, following a 16-18 month pregnancy. White Gladis is just one among many orcas in this apparent uprising. White Gladis first started ramming boats in the summer of 2020 and later gave birth to her calf in 2021, according to LiveScience.
