CNN —Rescue crews have located the body of an Oregon climber who went missing earlier this week, according to local officials. After several days of searching by air, rescue crews in Oregon used drone footage Thursday to locate the body of 21-year-old Joel Tranby on North Sister mountain, according to a Facebook post from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office. Tranby “died after falling several hundred feet down a loose and rocky slope,” says the post. “Joel has gone to be with the Lord.”The sheriff’s office first received a call about Tranby’s fall on Monday, according to the sheriff’s office. “The caller reported that her boyfriend had fallen approximately 300-500ft down the slope and was severely injured,” says the post.

CNN —A tsunami advisory issued after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska late Saturday has since been canceled, officials said. The earthquake hit offshore about 55 miles southwest from Sand Point, Alaska, at a depth of 13 mi. The quake prompted a brief tsunami warning for parts of Alaska near the Aleutian islands, extending from Unimak Pass to Kennedy Entrance, before being revised to a tsunami advisory. There is no tsunami threat for other Pacific coasts in the US and Canada, the advisory said. There is a “watch” currently in effect for the Shishaldin volcano.

The rocks beneath an ancient volcano on the moon’s far side remain surprisingly warm, scientists have revealed using data from orbiting Chinese spacecraft. They point to a large slab of granite that solidified from magma in the geological plumbing beneath what is known as the Compton-Belkovich Volcanic Complex. “I would say we’re putting the nail in the coffin of this really is a volcanic feature,” said Matthew Siegler, a scientist at the Planetary Science Institute, headquartered in Tucson, Ariz., and who led the research. “But then what’s interesting is, it’s a very Earth-like volcanic feature.”The findings, which appeared last week in the journal Nature, help explain what happened long ago beneath an odd part of the moon. The study also highlights the scientific potential of data gathered by China’s space program, and how researchers in the United States have to circumvent obstacles to use that data.

LIMA, July 3 (Reuters) - Peru will declare emergency status in the area around the Ubinas volcano in the southern region of Moquegua, the prime minister said on Monday, as the country's most active volcano has been spewing ash for several days. Southern Peru, an area where there are important mining sites, is home to a dozen active volcanoes. Peru is also in the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," an area with a high incidence of earthquakes and volcanic activity. Prime Minister Alberto Otarola told reporters at the Government Palace that the emergency status will probably be declared in the next few days in order to provide "the necessary prevention measures" for the region. Peruvian authorities in 2019 evacuated hundreds of people living near the Ubinas volcano after explosions and ashes emissions.

JAKARTA, July 3 (Reuters) - An earthquake with a 6.2 magnitude struck off Indonesia's Papua province on Monday, the national geophysics agency said, adding there was no tsunami potential. The epicenter of the quake was at a depth of 33 km (20.51 miles) on land. The quake was strongly felt in Jayapura, the capital of Papua, the local police spokesperson Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo said, adding there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Indonesia straddles the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire", a highly seismically active zone, where different plates on the Earth's crust meet and create a large number of earthquakes and volcano activity.
