CNN —A pre-Women’s World Cup friendly between the Republic of Ireland and Colombia was abandoned after it was deemed “overly physical,” the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) said in a statement. The behind-closed-doors match in Brisbane, Australia ended after 20 minutes, the FAI said on Friday, with the team proceeding to take part in a full training session instead. “The game, which was held in Meakin Park, Brisbane, became overly physical and it was decided, following consultation with the match officials, to end the game,” the FAI said, per Reuters. One of Ireland’s key players, midfielder Denise O’Sullivan, had an x-ray and scans on an injury sustained during the friendly. Ireland begins its campaign against Australia on the opening day, while Colombia’s first match is against South Korea on July 25.

What is aspartame and what do the new WHO rulings mean?
  + stars: | 2023-07-13 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
Discovered in 1965 by American chemist James Schlatter, aspartame is about 200 times sweeter than regular table sugar. One group of experts, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), said aspartame is a "possible carcinogen". For aspartame, this limit is 40 milligrams of aspartame per kilogram of body weight per day. Aspartame's use in food products has been debated for decades and has also prompted some companies to remove the compound from their products. PepsiCo (PEP.O) removed aspartame from Diet Pepsi in 2015 but brought it back a year later.

Reuters reported last month that the cancer research arm of the World Health Organization (WHO), known as the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), was set to make that declaration on July 14, according to two sources with knowledge of the process. The designation as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" will provide an incentive to fund more rigorous research into the safety question, toxicology and cancer experts say. "We have been pushing for an IARC review for many years now." But no action was taken until 2022, after aspartame was again nominated for review by CSPI and Melnick in 2019. The research body has said "new evidence" prompted its aspartame review, without giving any details.

FRANKFURT/LONDON July 13 (Reuters) - Energy majors BP (BP.L) and TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) have won a 7 gigawatt (GW) offshore wind site auction in Germany worth a record 12.6 billion euros ($14.1 billion), allowing them entry to the central European market without a partnership. The awards for capacity due to come online in 2030 also excluded leading offshore wind developers, such as RWE (RWEG.DE) and Orsted (ORSTED.CO). AUCTION DESIGNThe 7 GW electronic auction officially opened in January and bidders had until June 1 to submit offers. In previous German lease auctions, companies have made low or negative bids with the expectation of subsidies from the state. Industry groups have said the high costs of the leases could drive up the cost of offshore wind projects.

Aspartame is one of the world's most popular sweeteners, used in products from Coca-Cola diet sodas to Mars' Extra chewing gum. In its first declaration on the additive, announced early on Friday, the Lyon-based International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said aspartame was a "possible carcinogen". Several scientists not associated with the reviews said the evidence linking aspartame to cancer is weak. There was also some limited evidence that aspartame has some chemical properties that are linked to cancer, the IARC said. Scientists with no links to the WHO reviews said the evidence that aspartame caused cancer was weak.

Companies Bp Plc FollowTotalEnergies SE FollowFRANKFURT/LONDON, July 12 (Reuters) - Oil majors BP (BP.L) and TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) emerged as the winners in a 7 gigawatt (GW) offshore wind site auction in Germany worth 12.6 billion euros ($13.96 billion), highlighting the appeal of renewable assets across Europe. "The results confirm the attractiveness of investments in offshore wind power in Germany," said Klaus Mueller, president of Germany's energy regulator Bundesnetzagentur. Analysts at Jefferies noted the high price for the auction, adding that it implied "high interest in European offshore wind sites from energy companies/developers". BP won the rights to develop two projects, marking its entry into offshore wind in continental Europe and representing 4 GW out of the total, it said in a separate statement. "This is a significant milestone for BP, showing our commitment to transitioning into an integrated energy company," BP head of offshore wind Matthias Bausenwein said.

FRANKFURT, July 12 (Reuters) - Germany is set to hold on to its hydrogen economy goals up to 2030 and beyond while pressing for speed and allowing greater leeway in transitioning from fossil fuels-based variants to renewables, a draft paper showed on Wednesday. The draft was seen by Reuters while being presented to the national hydrogen council prior to assessment and adoption by the Berlin cabinet. It will become a 2023 strategy update guiding stakeholders in production, transport and wholesale markets as well as infrastructure investors. The coalition government in 2021 installed a target of 10 gigawatts (GW) of green hydrogen production by 2030, which can receive direct financial support, doubling previous ambitions. There would be greater tolerance of fossil- and nuclear-derived hydrogen, partly with carbon sequestration until such time as renewables could fully meet hydrogen demand, Germany's draft paper said.

CNN —A judge has blocked New York City’s minimum wage law for food delivery workers from going into effect on July 12 until there is a hearing for a lawsuit filed by DoorDash and Grubhub against the city. The law, announced last month, would increase pay for app delivery workers to $17.96 per hour before tips on July 12 and bump up the minimum wage to nearly $20 per hour in April 2025. Uber — the parent company of Uber Eats — filed a separate lawsuit against the city challenging the law. New York City’s minimum wage law comes after online meal delivery services surged in popularity during the pandemic, and food delivery volumes still remain higher than pre-Covid levels. Rublev downs fellow Russian Karatsev to reach third round

It's really, really tough to play against him," Rublev said. The forecourt had been uncharted territory for Rublev early in the match but he then started coming to the net purposefully. The pair looked evenly matched for much of the near-three-hour contest as Karatsev entertained the crowd with his powerful groundstrokes. He struggled to break Rublev, however, and it was the five break points converted by Rublev to Karatsev's two that proved the difference and the seventh seed clinched victory on his first match point. Rublev, who did not play at Wimbledon last year due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players, will next face wildcard David Goffin or qualifier Tomas Barrios Vera.

New York CNN —The labor market just won’t quit, but this could be another case of “good news is bad news” for the Federal Reserve. But while job growth is a sign of a healthy economy, Fed Chair Jerome Powell has said that he wants to see more slack in the labor market in order to bring inflation down. But in April, the unemployment rate reached 3.4%, with the 12-month average of unemployment reaching a record low of 3.6%. Plus, the mass retirement of baby boomers, slowing of immigration rates and long-term health impacts of Covid have also permanently altered the labor market. Why it matters: These changes have led many economists to say that the labor market doesn’t matter anymore, said Kathryn Rooney Vera, chief market strategist at StoneX.

The assessment came as the EU executive released its latest rule of law report, which includes tips for democratic improvements across EU member states. Last year's snapshot highlighted serious concerns about the rule of law in Poland and Hungary. "This rule of law report shows that there is no radical worsening or backsliding in any member state," said EU Commissioner for Values and Transparency Vera Jourova. She noted some improvements to the independence of the judiciary in Hungary, as Budapest sought to unlock access to EU grants. But the report still called on the nation to make improvements in areas including the independence of media and prosecutions of high-level corruption.

Maggie Harrison’s War on Wine

But the friend kept calling, and eventually she relented, flew to Portland and drove to a hillside in Amity. In 2019, she began offering an annual seminar for wine professionals that she named Beauty School. In her pursuit of maximally beautiful wines, Harrison has devised possibly the world’s most laborious way of making them. This blending period is when Harrison’s wines find their identities. “Though they can be punishingly difficult,” Ready told me, “those blending sessions are about trusting yourself, believing in the process and letting go of the desire to second guess.”Punishingly difficult seems to be Harrison’s thing.

Up the wooden gangplank in a single-file line, nearly an entire Indigenous village squeezed onto the Aquidaban’s front deck. The Tomárahos had taken the boat downriver to vote in Paraguay’s national elections, and then had slept outside for four days, waiting for the Aquidaban to take them home. Now, more than 200 of them squatted on overturned buckets, crowded on hammocks and sprawled on the floor. No one was quite sure how many life jackets were aboard, but just about everyone was sure the Tomárahos outnumbered them. “Ever since I was a kid, there was always the Aquidaban,” said Griselda Vera Velazquez, 33, a craftswoman in the Tomáraho village, where there is no road.
