Increasingly, Europe’s centrist figureheads are dropping their once-high-minded rhetoric on irregular migration, reaching instead for positions that were previously the preserve of the continent’s populist rabble-rousers. In Poland, like in much of Europe, “voters across the board expect that border security and migration controls are the priority,” Kucharczyk said. But Thursday’s victory for Tusk in Brussels underscores a broader, rightward shift across Europe on the issue of irregular migration. “It’s an existential issue for this coalition, and they don’t want to take chances on issues like migration,” Kucharczyk said. The wider question is whether the longstanding principles of the border-free Schengen Area can survive an enduring era of rising migration and populist subversion.

Russian artillery depends on a complex supply chain vulnerable to sanctions, defense experts say. Each company has its own supply chain of subcontractors, such as factories that make special steel. Current Western sanctions tend to be too broad and sporadic to cripple Russian defense production. A better approach would be a mixture of economic sanctions and diplomatic pressure focused on Russia's artillery supply chain, concluded the report. AdvertisementNonetheless, sanctions might ultimately prove to be a more effective approach than trying to destroy Russian artillery in combat.

Advanced air defenses and anti-ship cruise missiles may also be on the table. Iran has ordered Su-35 fighters and also wants S-400 Triumf air defenses to, among other things, face Israel's superior missiles and air force. The BRICS group will generate most of the global economic growth in the coming years thanks to its size and relatively fast growth compared with that of developed Western nations, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday. The Kremlin leader is due to host a BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan on Oct. 22-24. "The countries in our association are essentially the drivers of global economic growth. In the foreseeable future, BRICS will generate the main increase in global GDP," Putin told officials and businessmen at BRICS business forum in Moscow. SUNLAND PARK, N.M. — In each of the last two summers, Laura Mae Williams, who recovers bodies for the New Mexico Medical Investigator’s Office, has had to visit the U.S.-Mexico borderlands multiple times a week. The Medical Investigator’s Office, part of the University of New Mexico Health System, used to recover only a handful of bodies a year. First responders, elected officials and advocates in New Mexico attribute the spike in deaths largely to Texas Gov. Officials, including the New Mexico Medical Investigator’s Office, also blame smugglers for the deaths, noting that in many cases they abandon people who fall behind — but only after they take their phones. “It raises an important question,” said Dr. Heather Jarrell, the chief medical examiner at the Medical Investigator’s Office, whose office marks the deaths as accidental.

Seoul, South Korea AP —South Korean intelligence has found that North Korea has dispatched 12,000 troops including special operation forces to support Russia’s war against Ukraine, news reports said Friday, a development that could bring a third country into the war and intensify a standoff between North Korea and the West. North Korea has 1.2 million troops, one of the largest militaries in the world, but it lacks actual combat experience. Many experts question how much the North Korean troop dispatch would help Russia, citing North Korea’s outdated equipment and shortage of battle experiences. The statement said participants of the meeting agreed that North Korea’s troop dispatch poses a grave security threat to South Korea and the international community. Outside officials and experts say North Korea in exchange possibly received badly needed food and economic aid and technology assistance aimed at upgrading Kim’s nuclear-armed military.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea has designated South Korea a “hostile state,” its state media said Thursday, confirming that its national assembly had amended the constitution in line with leader Kim Jong Un’s vow to drop unification as a national goal. South Korea’s Unification Ministry, which handles ties with the North, said it “strongly condemns” the constitution change and South Korea’s characterization as a hostile state, and that it will not waver in its efforts toward peaceful reunification. North Korea has previously announced summaries of amendments after several days of delay. North Korea sharply intensified its hostile rhetoric in recent days, accusing the South of intruding on its airspace by flying drones and vowing retaliation. South Korea’s government has declined to say whether its military or civilians flew the alleged drones.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy unveiled his much anticipated “victory plan” on Wednesday, calling on his allies to take urgent steps to bolster Kyiv at a precarious moment in a bid to end the war with Russia next year. His plan proposed establishing a “comprehensive non-nuclear strategic deterrence package” inside Ukraine to protect against threats from Russia and to destroy its military power. Zelenskyy said it was imperative Kyiv’s partners remained united. “If we start moving on this victory plan now, we may be able to end the war by next year at the latest,” he said. In a discussion on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said: "North Korea has, in fact, entered the war," per state-run outlet United24 Media.
