Morning Bid: ECB to follow Fed hike, Meta surges
  + stars: | 2023-07-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
Fed Chair Jerome Powell remained equivocal about whether there was one more policy rate rise left this year and said Fed staff were no longer forecasting a recession - but futures markets continue to see a less than 50% chance of another move. Global stocks (.MIWD00000PUS) hit their highest since April last year on Thursday, with European stocks up more than 1% ahead of the ECB decision. The euro pushed higher against a softer dollar ahead of the announcement and press conference from ECB chief Christine Lagarde. The yen also firmed as the Bank of Japan is expected to keep its easy policy unchanged on Friday. The euro zone's biggest bank BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA), by contrast, beat Q2 estimates and the stock jumped 4%.

Their risk-level assessments have been the basis for informing how much capital they need to hold on top of baseline requirements. Silicon Valley Bank accumulated a lot of paper losses, or unrealized losses, from holding bonds while the Fed hiked interest rates. But it did not need to hold capital to protect depositors from those losses. Some also expressed concerns that banks would pass on their higher capital costs to consumers in the form of higher fees to maintain their profit levels. However, UBS, Citizens Bank and Capital One will have to hold more capital.

NEW YORK, July 27 (Reuters) - Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan said U.S. authorities need to be careful when implementing new capital requirements of the Basel III accord to avoid reducing the ability of U.S. banks to compete globally. ... We're talking about a $30 or $40 billion bank, or a $100 billion bank, not being able to compete for a middle market loan because a bank or a supplier in Europe ... is getting a lower cost of capital", Moynihan added. U.S. banking regulators are expected to unveil on Thursday a sweeping proposal for stricter bank capital requirements. While the precise details aren't yet known, regulators have said the rules will apply to banks with $100 billion in assets or more. Bank of America expects a "slight" recession in the first part of next year and predicts the first interest rate cut will happen by mid-2024.

U.S. banking regulators will on Thursday unveil a sweeping proposal for stricter bank capital requirements known as the "Basel III endgame" aimed at ensuring the stability of big banks under international rules rolled out after the 2008 financial crisis. Holding more RWA will require banks to set aside more capital under the new standards. Most of the need to raise capital would come from assessments of the bank's operational risks and their trading books.

Some delivery drivers are shaming customers who leave tips that they think are too small. DoorDash said it's looking into a TikTok video that appears to show a delivery driver complaining about a $5 tip. It shows a screenshot of an apparent text message from a DoorDash delivery driver. DoorDash told Insider that it was looking into the video. Some DoorDash drivers have told Insider that they are highly dependent on tips for their earnings.

Delivery drivers are weighing in on a contentious debate over what constitutes a good tip. Some drivers say a good tip is roughly 15% to 20% gratuity on the total cost of a delivery order. The drivers Insider interviewed generally agreed that the baseline for a good tip is between 15% to 20% of the total bill — including taxes and fees. Percentage-based tips don't always account for the time and effort it takes to deliver an order, drivers said. Consider delivery time and distance when tipping, drivers sayWhether a $5 tip on a $20 order is good (or bad) can depend on the circumstances of the delivery.

Investors, worried about the economic atmosphere and the recent regional banking collapse, breathed a sigh of relief at the results. Jamie Dimon, head of JPMorgan Chase, commented on the bank’s Friday earnings call that non-bank financial rivals were “dancing in the streets” as regulators get ready to increase bank capital requirements. “This is great news for hedge funds, private equity, private credit, Apollo, Blackstone,” Dimon said of the proposed regulations. The change, they say, will increase the financial system’s resilience following the failures of three regional banks earlier this year. “The capital in the industry is sufficient,” said Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan on his company’s earnings call Tuesday morning.

REUTERS/Jason Reed/File Photo(Reuters) - U.S. bank regulators are set to release their plans next week for a sweeping overhaul of capital rules, with the latest draft including requirements for large lenders’ residential mortgages that go beyond international standards, Bloomberg News reported on Monday. The changes would be part of the U.S. version of a global accord known as Basel III that followed the financial crisis, according to the report. The OCC and the FDIC did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. The proposal is the first major rule led by Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr, who has launched a sweeping review of capital rules and is expected to be tough on Wall Street.

Potential buyers and sellers are also being deterred by the long wait for deal approvals by regulators, the experts said. The uncertainty over capital rules has created a "chilling effect" that could put a lid on mergers, while rising interest rates and a looming economic downturn could also damp activity, Adams said. That compares to $3.9 billion in bank deals for non-stressed institutions, the lowest seen over the first half of a year since 2010. "Instead of evaluating mergers based on competition and the needs of the community, political factors have become too important," she said. Regional banks will "have incentives to merge and reach larger scale since they will be subject to more regulatory scrutiny and capital,” Johnson said.

Wall Street has suffered severe layoffs amid a dealmaking drought and shaky economic outlook. Headcount is up in every division, not including thousands of First Republic employees onboarded in July. Jobs have grown in every division despite the non-stop news about industry layoffs (think Goldman) and consolidation (think Credit Suisse). Federal banking regulators are expected to introduce proposals in the coming weeks requiring banks to keep more cash on hand to ensure the financial system remains stable. The nation's largest lender may increase prices or abandon some products as a way to offset the higher capital costs, Barnum said. One key new expected rule would require banks to hold more capital against certain trades. Meanwhile, banks are staying cautious and preserving capital until there is more clarity around the rules. Wells Fargo was expecting capital requirements to climb and weighing the potential effect on stock buybacks, CEO Charlie Scharf told investors on its call.

Moscow this month pledged to cut exports by 500,000 bpd in August, while Saudi Arabia extended its 1 million bpd output cuts. Russia exports oil and products via the Pacific and a direct pipeline to China as well as its European ports. Three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that Russia had instructed oil companies to reduce supply plans for the next month. Russian offline primary oil refining capacity is seen rising by 40% in August from July, making additional oil export cuts next month even tougher for many. If Russia wants to cut oil exports in August from July, companies may postpone some planned works to autumn months to increase domestic oil consumption, or cut oil production, traders said.

However, it was 24-year-old Vondrousova who secured the crucial break at 4-4 when a baseline rally ended with Pegula sending a backhand long. The twists and turns kept coming, though, as Pegula began finding her range in the second set. LONDON, July 11 (Reuters) - Even the world's best players are not immune to crippling nerves as Iga Swiatek discovered when her Wimbledon dreams were turned to dust in a 7-5 6-7(5) 6-2 quarter-final defeat by Ukrainian wildcard Elina Svitolina on Tuesday. That sequence included breaking Swiatek's serve twice in succession, with the Polish top seed surrendering the first of those to love with a double fault. That interlude gave Swiatek a chance to re-evaluate her tactics and she came back to break Svitolina for a 2-1 lead in the second set. Swiatek earned two more break points in the ninth game but once those went begging neither player could break the deadlock and they headed into the tiebreak. There was no coming back for Swiatek from that gaping abyss and a forehand into the net handed Svitolina a remarkable win.

Americans feel bad about the economy, even though data shows a booming labor market. The recovery from the pandemic recession reset everyone's expectations about what a good economy looks like. Americans are feeling bad about the economy, and some of that is likely due to inflation eating at their budgets. Consumer confidence is still low, and, as JPMorgan Asset Management chief global strategist David Kelly writes, Americans feel an "unreasonable level of gloom." In short, the things that used to make Americans feel good or bad about the economy aren't as consequential anymore.

So I was just looking after my game," Dimitrov said. The first things Tiafoe highlighted when asked to give his thoughts on Dimitrov prior to the match were the Bulgarian's first serve, his net game and his slice. When they resumed on Sunday, Dimitrov consolidated an early break and a restless Tiafoe lost his cool in no time. Djokovic leads despite Hurkacz ace barrage

Hurkacz rocketed down 23 aces including one clocked at 141mph -- the fastest serve of the tournament so far. Djokovic will sleep a lot easier than he might have done if the 17th seed Hurkacz had taken the opening set after two aces saw him to 6-3 in the tiebreak. Djokovic won both his points on serve to close the gap and then returned a Hurkacz howitzer and the Pole could only roll a forehand into the net. This time Hurkacz's spinning volley crept over and Djokovic almost fell over the net as he missed the put-away. Another tiebreak arrived and Hurkacz won a stunning baseline rally to save a set point but two points later he sent a forehand out to hand Djokovic a two-set lead.
