The Olympic sendoff friendlies seemed to clue at an early theory: park the bus, play defense-first soccer and frustrate the United States until you find a chance to try an attack. Although having Coffey back from suspension helped toward that end, the United States was still thin in central areas. Berger and Naeher were both instrumental in keeping the score 0-0 throughout regulation, Berger moreso given the United States’ stronger attacking presence. Tournament Naeher is a different beast from any other level of her play. The United States heads to its first Olympic women’s gold medal match since the 2012 London Games.

But when my eldest son was a young child, there was no vaccine for rotavirus. Mohamed Bassyouni Gates MRIIt just so happened that my research back then supported clinical trials evaluating a vaccine candidate for rotavirus. In Saudi Arabia, where we were living at the time, my two younger children received their rotavirus shots as their doctors recommended. And researchers at the National Institutes of Health in the US determined that the vaccine also “substantially reduced hospitalization and deaths in Africa.”The expectation was that many lives would be saved around the globe thanks to the rotavirus vaccine. This could be the first new TB vaccine in 100 years.

Nearly 4% of clade 1b mpox cases are deadly, compared to less than 1% of the 2022 subtype, called clade 2b. Is the U.S. at risk for a similar mpox outbreak? The Jynneos mpox vaccine, given in two doses, is effective for both clade 1 and clade 2 of mpox, according to the CDC. Despite the dismal uptake, those vaccines are abundant in the U.S., compared to African countries. “I’m a lot more concerned for the people in African countries where those vaccines are not available,” she said.

Eugenicists used photographs and IQ tests to determine which people were "inferior," and sterilized those who didn't measure up — which usually turned out to be anyone who wasn't white and rich. Before he worked with photographs, Kosinski was interested in Facebook. It's just picking up on the way gay people present themselves on dating sites — which, not surprisingly, is often very different from the way straight people present themselves to potential partners. Kosinski thinks AI's ability to make the kind of personality judgments he studies will only get better. That is the future Kosinski fears — even as he continues to tinker with the very models that prove it will come to pass.

The Olympic men’s golf competition was in the hands of Jon Rahm. In the battle for bronze, Japan’s Hideki Matsuayama shot a final-round 65 to finish at 17-under-par, two shots behind Scheffler and one behind Fleetwood. Scheffler has won seven of his last 11 outings, all coming in majors or signature events with limited fields. The biggest winner this week was perhaps golf as an Olympic sport. Massive crowds all three days, genuine Olympic energy, and a star-stacked leaderboard proved the sport has a place in the Games.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —North Korea claims it is sending 250 new tactical ballistic missile launchers toward its border with South Korea, in the latest bellicose declaration by leader Kim Jong Un against its neighbor. Photographs published by the North Korean state newspaper Rodong Sinmun showed what appears to be vehicle-based missile launchers, with dozens of large green military trucks lined up in neat rows before Kim. Kim personally oversaw the transfer of equipment to military commanders and chiefs of staff, and delivered a speech claiming the new missile launchers were built with North Korean technology, state media reported. In response to the North Korean buildup, the US and South Korea – along with Japan – have stepped up their military cooperation via exercises and deployments that Pyongyang sees as a threat. There have been at least three incidents of South Korea firing warning shots since May after North Korean military personnel crossed the demarcation line, the midpoint of the Demilitarized Zone between the two countries.

Against Croatia’s Donna Vekić, Zheng produced a stunning display of powerful hitting on the clay of Roland Garros, triumphing 6-2, 6-3 in a hard-fought gold medal match. Upon winning match point, her delight was laid bare. Vekić, already making history as the first Croatian tennis player to reach an Olympic singles final, took longer to settle. “I’m really happy to be here, to have won the gold medal, to represent my country,” she added. “I’m supposed to become better, but after this gold medal, I feel I can finally play tennis a bit more relaxed.”Zheng’s path to the gold medal, not just because of her semifinal victory against bronze medalist Swiatek, has hardly been straightforward.

"That was unique," Ronald Rowe Jr., the acting director of the Secret Service, said Friday. The Secret Service has faced intense scrutiny in the wake of the incident. The Secret Service initially blamed local law enforcement but later conceded it was ultimately the agency's responsibility to ensure the building was covered. Secret Service personnel were in one command post, with a member of the Pennsylvania State Police, and their local partners were in an entirely separate space. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned last month in the wake of the attack and after a contentious House hearing about the attempt.

With Vice President Kamala Harris’s announcement of her running mate only days away, I should probably be placing odds on who will get the nod. They belie all the complaints until recently about the barren Democratic Party bench, constituting a whole gleaming bleachers section of their own. You allow yourself the bounty of Josh Shapiro, Mark Kelly, Andy Beshear and Tim Walz, all of whom reportedly reached the finals of consideration to join Harris on the Democratic ticket. You deny yourself the splendor of Gretchen Whitmer, Gina Raimondo and Pete Buttigieg, all of whom have been deemed long shots or nonstarters for reasons apart from their political talents. Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty ImagesThere is an "internal battle" happening within India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party over inviting Chinese investments, as the country strives to become Asia's manufacturing powerhouse, Alicia Garcia-Herrero, chief Asia Pacific economist at Natixis said. This proposal was shot down by Trade Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday who said that there was "no rethinking at present" on allowing Chinese investments into India, Reuters reported. Experts told CNBC that Chinese investments are needed in India's solar panel and battery manufacturing sectors — two areas that a report, citing Indian government sources last week, mentioned could see easing restrictions on Chinese investments. India increased scrutiny on Chinese investments into the country, and also blocked several Chinese mobile apps including TikTok following the incident.
