DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The biennial Dubai Air Show opened Monday as airlines are poised to make major aircraft purchases after rebounding from the groundings of the coronavirus pandemic, even as Israel's war with Hamas clouds regional security. That conflict, as well as Russia's war on Ukraine, likely will influence the five-day show at Al Maktoum Airport at Dubai World Central. It is the city-state's second airfield after Dubai International Airport, which is the world's busiest for international travel and home base for the long-haul carrier Emirates. Air traffic is now at 97% of pre-COVID levels, according to the International Air Transport Association. Emirates, a main economic engine for Dubai amid its booming real estate market, announced record half-year profits of $2.7 billion Thursday.

The discussions at the Dubai International Air Chiefs’ Conference, held ahead of the biennial Dubai Air Show this week, shows the delicate balancing act the federation of seven sheikhdoms faces. The UAE maintains diplomatic ties with Israel despite widespread and growing anger in the Arab world over the civilian casualties from Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip against Hamas. The Air Chiefs' Conference demonstrates how those ties continue, particularly as Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd., an Israeli defense manufacturer, was a sponsor of the summit. Sunday's summit drew attendees from across the world, though it did not appear there were any Israeli military officials on hand. The Relentless Longevity of Novak Djokovic
  + stars: | 2023-11-10 | by ( Joshua Robinson | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Novak Djokovic isn’t going anywhere. A full two decades after turning professional as a skinny teenager in 2003, Djokovic is just one match victory away from finishing a record eighth season as world No. By all normal expectations, the 36-year-old Djokovic should be showing signs of wear by now. Or have a whole generation of players bidding to tear him down. But as he joked this season: “It ain’t happening.”
Persons: Novak Djokovic isn’t, Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal,
For Novak Djokovic, his 2008 season, just a few years after he turned pro, was great by any measure. He not only won his first of six ATP Finals, but he began 2008 taking the Australian Open, the first of his 10 titles there and what would become 24 major championships overall. In the semifinals he upset the top seed, Roger Federer, and beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final. By season’s end, Djokovic had won two other tournaments, including Masters 1000s in Indian Wells and Rome. That year solidified Djokovic as a bona fide member of what was to become known as the Big Three, alongside Federer and Nadal.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Nuclear energy must be part of the equation to tackle climate change, the U.N. nuclear chief said Wednesday. Over a quarter of the electricity from nuclear power is low-carbon electricity and global carbon dioxide emissions would be considerably higher without nuclear power, Grossi said. More than 400 nuclear reactors in over 30 countries are supplying global electricity, and Grossi said more than 50 are under construction and many countries are extending their existing nuclear programs. Political Cartoons View All 1237 ImagesBut “nuclear power’s share of global electricity production decreased by about half" in the past two decades, he said. BEIJING, Nov 2 (Reuters) - The U.S. destroyer USS Rafael Peralta and a Royal Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Ottawa transited the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday, the U.S. 7th Fleet said in a statement, making their third joint transit in the region since June. Taiwan's defence ministry said the two warships sailed through the Taiwan Strait in a northerly direction on Wednesday night, adding it monitored the movement and the situation was "normal." The U.S. and Canadian navies made a similar transit in September. In June, the U.S. navy released a video of what it called an "unsafe interaction" in the Taiwan Strait in which a Chinese warship crossed in front of a U.S. destroyer. Shares of GE HealthCare surged roughly 5% Tuesday, to more than $66 apiece. Looking ahead to next year, our thesis is unchanged: GE HealthCare should be one of the big winners from recent advancements in Alzheimer's treatments. Last week, GE HealthCare's Dutch peer Phillips (PHG) said its orders fell 9% in the third quarter, marking its fifth-straight quarter of declines. The wide gap in orders between the two companies suggests to us that GE HealthCare is taking market share in the industry. Guidance GE HealthCare reaffirmed most of its 2023 outlook Tuesday.
