Source: General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of ChinaImage of Chinese customs officers holding bags of snakes seized at the Futian Port shared on July 9, 2024A man attempting to smuggle 104 live snakes in his pants was caught at a Chinese border this week, according to the country's customs authority. Upon inspection of his trousers, officers discovered six sealed bags containing a variety of exotic snakes, including milk snakes, western hognose snakes, corn snakes, Texas rat snakes and bullsnakes. An accompanying video showed two border agents holding up large transparent bags filled with the multi-colored live reptiles, often sought out as exotic pets. While none of the serpents were venomous, at least four of the species are considered alien to China, which could constitute a violation of Chinese biosafety law. The customs authority said it would hold the man legally responsible in accordance with the law without specifying an exact punishment.

Silkworm satay? Singapore approves insects as food

Singapore’s state food agency (SFA) has approved 16 species of edible insects for sale and consumption in the country, according to a July 8 public circular addressed to food traders. Insects approved by the SFA include locusts, grasshoppers, mealworms and several species of beetle. “Insects are an overlooked source of protein and a way to battle climate change,” according to a 2022 report by the World Economic Forum. Live insects are commonly sold in Singapore as food for pets like songbirds and reptiles, but they could be a new and exciting option for human diners. “As the insect industry is nascent and insects are a new food item here, SFA has developed an insect regulatory framework which puts in place guidelines for insects to be approved as food,” SFA said.

Waymo's autonomous driver is pretty damn smart, and aside from a few hesitations, the robotaxi offers a smooth, comfortable experience with competitive pricing against other ride-hailing apps. Lloyd Lee/Business InsiderWaymo's 5th generation autonomous driver could be best described as a safe but not an annoyingly cautious driver. It did the same thing to give itself more room when it detected a large parked bucket truck slightly in Waymo's lane. The expectation I had that the Waymo driver would be stiff, as the term "robot taxi" might suggest, was dispelled throughout the rides. The spokesperson said it's also possible I failed to notice something the Waymo car picked up.

California is likely to be especially hard hit, with highs passing 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius) in many areas. For instance, chicken should be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit, and ground beef should be cooked to at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit. That applies to cooked meat like hamburgers as well as perishable salads like potato salad and cole slaw. Not only can raw milk harbor bacteria, but it is also possible that raw milk can transmit the bird flu. It wasn’t advisable for people to drink raw milk or consume products made from raw milk prior to the bird flu outbreak, and it certainly is not advisable now.

The Science of Dogs
  + stars: | 2024-06-30 | by ( Emily Anthes | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
My career as a science journalist began with a story on canine genetics. Over the two decades since, I have seen dogs transform from an academic afterthought to the new “it” animal for scientific research. In the United States alone, tens of thousands of dogs are now enrolled in large, ongoing studies. In today’s newsletter, I’ll explain why dogs have become such popular scientific subjects. Big dog dataFirst, an important clarification: Dogs have long been the subject of invasive medical experiments, similar to lab rats and monkeys.

How Science Went to the Dogs (and Cats)

This article is part of our Pets special section on scientists’ growing interest in our animal companions. Every dog has its day, and July 14, 2004, belonged to a boxer named Tasha. “And everything has kind of exploded since then,” said Elaine Ostrander, a canine genomics expert at the National Human Genome Research Institute, who was part of the research team. In the 20 years since, geneticists have fallen hard for our canine companions, sequencing thousands upon thousands of dogs, including pedigreed purebreds, mysterious mutts, highly trained working dogs, free-ranging village dogs and even ancient canine remains. (“I didn’t want to study dogs,” said Alexandra Horowitz, who has since become a prominent researcher in the field of canine cognition.)

For 30 years, archaeologists have been digging at Jamestown, the first permanent British settlement in America. Now, some of the most intriguing clues are coming from bones — not of the people who lived in Jamestown, but of the dogs. The earliest written records of European colonists make only fleeting references to dogs. Some European dogs helped hunt down deer and birds, while others were sent into battle: When Powhatan forces attacked Jamestown, English soldiers retaliated by setting dogs loose on Powhatan villages.

The Costs of Caring for Pets

Pets these days are just like us. Their health care is becoming more human, too — for better and for worse. Decades ago, animal care was relatively rudimentary. Veterinarians usually owned their own clinics, and the options to treat a sick or injured pet were limited. For pets and the people who love them, the advances are welcome.

Are We Loving Our Pets to Death?
  + stars: | 2024-06-22 | by ( Linda Baker | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Pets are more popular than ever. The pet population in India hit 31 million in 2021, up from 10 million in 2011. And our pets are becoming ever more like us — or at least, that seems to be our goal. Now some animal welfare ethicists and veterinary scientists are wondering if, in our efforts to humanize our pets, we’ve gone too far. The more we treat pets like people, they argue, the more constrained and dependent on us our pets’ lives have become, and the more health and behavioral issues our pets develop.
