But now, as the dangers of a widening deficit and mounting debt grow, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are making little effort to address it. A budget deficit occurs when a country’s spending exceeds what it collects in revenue, primarily through taxes. The deficit is expected to widen under the status quo and could get even worse under proposals by both Harris and Trump, if enacted. During the Trump-Harris presidential debate earlier this month, the budget deficit was mentioned just twice, when Harris jabbed Trump for his proposals, which are expected to add considerably more to the deficit than hers. In the 2021 fiscal year, during which Trump left office, the country ran a $2.8 trillion deficit.

This week, Putin once again rattled the arms-control world by revealing proposed changes to his country’s nuclear doctrine. “In the current version of Russia’s nuclear doctrine, there is no distinction between an aggression by nuclear- and non-nuclear-weapon state,” he wrote. “There are two noteworthy points of departure from the previous 2020 Russian military doctrine,” she wrote on X. “2020 doctrine allowed the use of NW [nuclear weapons] in response to conventional aggression that jeopardizes the very existence of the state. And the results of Zelensky’s visit to the US may soon tell us whether anyone in Washington is listening to Putin’s nuclear talk.

Although CDC data suggests rates of cigarette smoking, which is the leading risk factor for lung cancer in the US, have declined significantly over the last few decades, rates of non-smokers getting lung cancer are rising. Doctors quickly identified she had stage four, non-small cell lung cancer, which had spread to her pelvis, right femur, and cervical spine. The OPEC+ alliance is once more cracking down on group compliance with oil output cuts, as it presses ahead with a three-pronged plan of formal and voluntary production trims. Eight OPEC+ members, including kingpin Saudi Arabia, were due to begin returning 2.2 million barrels per day of voluntary cuts to the market starting in October. Earlier this month, they postponed this phaseout to start in December instead. OPEC+ nations are operating two other production declines: under official policy, they will produce a combined 39.725 million bpd next year. The same aforementioned eight members are separately curbing their output by another 1.7 million bpd throughout 2025, also on a voluntary basis.

Air France announced that from 2025, it will offer ultra-high-speed WiFi free of charge to customers in every cabin. Musk celebrated the deal in a post on X, replying to Air France's post by saying: "Air France is installing Starlink!" The announcement comes just two weeks after United Airlines also confirmed it was signing up to become a Starlink customer.
