Ukraine's military chief on Saturday warned that the battlefield situation in the industrial east has "significantly worsened in recent days," as warming weather allowed Russian forces to launch a fresh push along several stretches of the more 1,000 km-long (620-mile) front line. It has increasingly used satellite-guided gliding bombs — which allow planes to drop them from a safe distance — to pummel Ukrainian forces beset by a shortage of troops and ammunition. Starting last month, Moscow renewed its assault on Ukrainian energy facilities. At least 10 of the strikes damaged energy infrastructure in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city. In the winter of 2022-2023, Russia took aim at Ukraine's power grid in an effort to deny civilians light and heating and chip away at the country's appetite for war.

By designing a balloon-popping tablet game and collecting data from 20 pet parrots, the researchers found that birds’ interest in the game indicated mental stimulation could be a potential benefit. Each parrot popped virtual balloons by using its tongue and beak, with eyes often very close to the screen. Rébecca KleinbergerResearchers designed the tablet game to be used by a parrot in collaboration with the bird's caretaker. One bird showed more interest in playing the game after researchers adjusted the tablets to only account for one tap per 300 milliseconds, she added. Ukraine has built up a formidable arsenal of drones capable of attacking Russian forces everywhere. But these systems are no alternative to the other weapons Kyiv needs, President Zelenskyy said Tuesday. Ukraine needs air defenses, missiles, and artillery, he told Axel Springer media outlets. That said, Kyiv's drone program does not make up for the weapons that the country really needs but doesn't have in its arsenal. Advertisement"If we don't have air-defense systems and the appropriate long-range weapons to match Putin, he will destroy our country," Zelenskyy said Tuesday.

It took 15 minutes for Colley and his team to make the shirt and hang it outside his customizable apparel shop, in New York's Upper West Side neighborhood. Colley didn't advertise it on social media, and priced the shirt at $10, not expecting to turn a large profit, he says. A customer told him that the shirt had been viewed almost 2 million times on social media platform X, he adds. The shop sold roughly 1,000 earthquake shirts over 21 hours on Friday and Saturday, resulting in more than $9,800 in revenue, according to documents reviewed by CNBC Make It. Tourists stopped by because their friends had seen videos of his shop on local news channels in Italy, says Colley.

Rob Hobson, a UK-based nutritionist, cut down on ultra-processed foods about a year ago after learning how many everyday items fell into this category and the potential health risks they could pose. Advertisement"I don't normally eat processed meat, but it's the easiest thing to grab if you're working in an office," he said. But it's important to note that studies have only identified a link and can't confirm that processed meat causes these illnesses.

Houthi attack drones have mostly been intercepted by US and allied warships in the Red Sea. Air-to-air combat has been much less common, but last month, a French helicopter shot down a drone. Read previewRussia has been pounding Ukraine's second largest city with strikes, intensifying its missile, drone, and glide bomb attacks on Kharkiv in recent weeks. The situation is dire, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said, and highlights the desperate need for more air-defense systems to keep Ukraine protected. On the heels of the attacks, Zelenskyy said the "situation in Kharkiv is very harsh," noting that "Russians began using guided aerial bombs against the city almost daily." And from March 18-24, just a six-day period, Russia dropped a staggering 700 glide bombs on Ukraine. Speaking about the Patriots on Saturday, Zelenskyy said that "there are air defense systems around the world that can help.

Zelenskyy separately acknowledged four people were killed in Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine on Thursday, following a Russian strike with an Iranian-make "Shahed" drone on a residential area. The toll included three rescuers from Ukraine's state emergency service. The Kyiv leader added he has spoken with the military to bolster air defense for Kharkiv, Sumy and the country's southern regions.

On Monday, April 8, millions of people will witness a rare total solar eclipse as it passes over Mexico, the United States and Canada. For starters, Pizza Hut will give customers a “Total Eclipse of the Hut” deal on eclipse day, offering any large-sized pizza for $12. This is the second time Krispy Kreme has created a new one pegged to a total solar eclipse. Back in 2017, during the last total solar eclipse in the US, the brand used chocolate to cover its original glazed doughnut. NASA recommends wearing a set of eclipse glasses that complies with the ISO 12312-2 international standard when viewing any solar eclipse.

When the largest earthquake in Taiwan in half a century struck off its east coast, the buildings in the closest city, Hualien, swayed and rocked. As more than 300 aftershocks rocked the island over the next 24 hours to Thursday morning, the buildings shook again and again. One of them, the rounded, red brick Uranus Building, which leaned precariously after its first floors collapsed, was mostly drawing curious onlookers. The building is a reminder of how much Taiwan has prepared for disasters like the magnitude-7.4 earthquake that jolted the island on Wednesday. Of Taiwan, he added: “And most of these deaths, it seems, have come from rock slides and boulders, rather than building collapses.”

Ukraine’s military had only one Bohdana artillery cannon in its arsenal when Russia invaded the country two years ago. Now, Ukraine’s arms industry is building eight of the self-propelled Bohdana artillery systems each month, and although officials will not say how many they’ve made in total, the increased output signals a potential boom in the country’s domestic weapons production. Russia’s war machine is already quadrupling weapons production in round-the-clock operations. Ukraine’s forces are losing territory in some key areas, including the strategic eastern town of Avdiivka, where they withdrew from in February. And while European defense firms are gingerly opening operations in Ukraine, major American weapons producers have yet to commit to setting up shop in the middle of a war.

A nor’easter is forecast to bring an April onslaught of snow, rain, high winds and coastal flooding to the Northeastern United States this week, the National Weather Service said. Rain will lash areas of New York, Southern Connecticut and Northern New Jersey starting on Tuesday. Heavy, wet snow is expected to blanket mainly parts of inland New England starting on Wednesday before tapering off into a light dusting on Friday, the weather prediction center said. “The biggest impact we are worried about from this storm is the heavy, wet nature of the snowfall” in northern New England, said Donald Dumont, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine. “All of New England is going to get it, but probably more rain in southern New England.”Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey could all, to varying degrees, feel the brunt of the stormy weather.

CNN —Ancient DNA recovered from the remains of a sixth century Chinese emperor who ruled during the country’s dark ages has shed some light on what the leader may have looked like. Emperor Wu ruled China as part of the Northern Zhou dynasty from 560 to 580 and is credited with unifying the northern part of ancient China during a particularly chaotic period. “Our analysis shows Emperor Wu had typical East or Northeast Asian facial characteristics.”The authors said they hoped ancient DNA might shed light on Wu’s cause of death. The genetic analysis showed that Emperor Wu intermarried with ethnically Han Chinese, China’s dominant ethnic group today. “It’s interesting to see the genetic study, but none of the findings of this genetic study are surprising at all,” Miller said.
