Democratic former Rep. Tom Suozzi won Tuesday night's special election in New York. As a result, Trump took to Truth Social to insult the GOP's losing candidate, Mazi Pilip. AdvertisementFormer President Donald Trump railed against the GOP's losing candidate in New York's 3rd Congressional District's special election on Tuesday, attributing her loss to not having supported him enough. Democratic former Rep. Tom Suozzi bested Republican candidate Mazi Pilip on Tuesday by just under 8 percentage points, surpassing expectations set from prior polling amid a heavy New York snowstorm. Trump wrote, referring to Pilip being registered to vote as a Democrat for over a decade when chosen as the GOP's nominee.

ET, and polls are closing in New York's 3rd Congressional District where voters are casting their ballots in a special election to fill the vacant seat of former GOP Rep. George Santos. Nominees were chosen by county party leaders in the district. Democrats nominated former Rep. Tom Suozzi, who represented a previous version of the 3rd District for three terms before launching an unsuccessful primary campaign for governor in 2022. Republicans nominated Mazi Pilip, a county legislator who was born in Ethiopia and immigrated to the US from Israel. The contest has national stakes and could serve as a bellwether for the mood of the electorate this presidential cycle.

Read previewAs voters in New York's 3rd Congressional District cast their votes in Tuesday's special election, heavy snowfall across the region may play a key role in downsizing the Republican Party's already narrow House majority. In the weeks leading up to the special election, polling indicated that Suozzi appeared to possess a 4 percentage point advantage over Pilip. Politico reported on February 10 that Suozzi, at the time, possessed a lead in reported early votes. Nevertheless, there's still hope for Pilip and the Republican Party: the aforementioned research report also noted that "poor weather" tends to benefit the GOP more than Democrats.

Voting signs are seen outside city hall for New York's 3rd Congressional District special election in Glen Cove, N.Y., on Sunday, February 4, 2024. Democrat Tom Suozzi, who previously represented New York's 3rd Congressional District, is facing off against Republican Mazi Pilip, in a special election to fill the seat left vacant by Santos' ouster. Democrats might typically hold an advantage in a special election to replace a disgraced Republican who has been denounced by his own party. Including the seat most recently held by Santos, Republicans represent all four Nassau County-area congressional districts. So it's no surprise that national Republicans are working to keep Santos' district red and avoid further narrowing the party's already razor-thin majority in the House.

A special election in the suburbs of New York to replace disgraced former Rep. George Santos could offer clues about the mindset of suburban voters everywhere as 2024 election contests ramp up across the country. “This is a big concern for my district,” Pilip said. He had a comfortable victory in his last race in the district in 2020, defeating Santos, then a relatively unknown Republican. Another question that has loomed over the race has been whether the district will exist in its current form for much longer. The ruling was a major win for Democrats in the state who have angled for more favorable congressional districts.

Plans that strengthen infrastructure for temporary and permanent affordable housing, and increase local support for demographics most vulnerable to homelessness, were consistently successful. Building paths to permanent housing in those cities improved overall housing access, researchers said. But Seattle has higher rates of unsheltered homelessness, so resources were better directed to building more temporary housing options. Chicago and New York have seen longer-term success in reducing homelessness, but both saw a spike between 2022 and 2023. The main driver of homelessness is the severe housing shortage across the country, so the most fundamental solution is creating more affordable housing.

Delta Air Lines ' popular airport lounges are getting a more exclusive tier, in the airline's latest push to cater to high-spending travelers. The first "premium" lounge is scheduled to open in June at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, and at 38,000 square feet, it will be the largest of the carrier's lounges, Delta said on Thursday. Other high-end Delta lounges will open in Boston and Los Angeles later this year. The new strategy shows Delta moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach for its airport travelers. The airline is joining United Airlines , which operates Polaris lounges, and American Airlines ' which has Flagship lounges, along with standard airport clubs.

Allen Howard Weisselberg, the former Trump Organization CFO, appears for sentencing for tax fraud scheme in New York State Supreme Court in the Manhattan borough of New York City, January 10, 2023. The New York judge set to deliver a verdict in the civil business fraud trial of Donald Trump has ordered attorneys in the case to give him details about possible perjury by former Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg. That report, which cited people with knowledge of the matter, said that Weisselberg would have to admit that he lied during his testimony at Trump's fraud trial in Manhattan Supreme Court. Weisselberg last year spent three months at New York's notorious Rikers Island jail after pleading guilty to tax fraud in a criminal case related to his work at the Trump Organization. After his October testimony in the AG's civil fraud trial, Forbes magazine accused Weisselberg of lying under oath when he suggested he had not paid attention to the valuation of Trump's penthouse apartment.

Since most Americans last voted for Congress, thousands of people have been added to certain voting districts — and subtracted from others — under new political maps enacted following court rulings. Here's a look at how voting districts have changed — or could change — before the November elections and what affect that could have on the battle for control of Congress. Perhaps the most notable is Florida, where a trial judge in September ruled that U.S. House districts pushed by Republican Gov. Litigation over congressional districts also is lingering in Arkansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin. The reshaping of voting districts matters, but doesn't necessarily pre-determine the outcome of elections.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A federal judge has rejected a challenge to New York state’s licensing program to sell legal marijuana, a system two California applicants say unconstitutionally discriminates against out-of-state residents. The ruling Friday by Albany Judge Anne M. Nardacci may spur New York into issuing hundreds of licenses in a state where most marijuana is sold by unlicensed businesses. She said the main purpose of the dormant Commerce Clause plaintiffs argued should allow them to access New York's market doesn’t apply to the federally illegal cannabis trade. Critics blame New York’s slow retail growth partly on bureaucratic issues, like delays in setting up a $200 million “social equity” fund to help applicants open shops. The rollout also was hobbled by lawsuits on behalf of people and businesses excluded from the first wave of retail licenses.

The day before awarding Carroll $83.3 million in damages — Trump's penance for calling her a lying "whack job" when she told the world he'd sexually assaulted her — jurors heard, firsthand, how rich he was. AdvertisementTrump's "I'm rich" boasts hurt him in both the Carroll verdict and the upcoming fraud trial verdict, Snell said. Punitive damages in defamation cases are supposed to have a deterrent effect, to stop the defamation from happening again. AdvertisementTrump's wealth also illustrates why the jury imposed enormous punitive damages compared to the $18.3 million to compensate Carroll. The Carroll jury also heard Trump boast about the value of his "brand."

By Jack QueenNEW YORK (Reuters) -A ruling in the New York state attorney general's $370 million civil fraud case against former U.S. president Donald Trump will not come until early to-mid February, a court spokesperson said Thursday. Trump has denied wrongdoing and called the case a political vendetta by James, an elected Democrat. Engoron previously ruled in September that Trump had engaged in fraud and ordered his business empire be partially dissolved. Closing arguments were delivered in the case on Jan. 11, with Engoron saying on that day he had hoped to issue a ruling by Jan. 31. On the day of closing arguments, Trump lashed out at the judge in the courtroom, telling him, "You have your own agenda.

Donald Trump on Monday lashed out at the financial monitor overseeing the Trump Organization and urged a judge to fire her days after she reported a range of issues — and flagged a questionable $48 million loan — in the former president's New York civil business fraud case. New York Attorney General Letitia James has asked Engoron to order that Jones continue to monitor the Trump Organization for at least five years as part of his judgment in the case. Robert made that argument three days after Jones submitted a report to Engoron accusing the Trump Organization of providing incomplete, inconsistent or incorrect information about its financial disclosures. In a footnote in that report, Jones said she identified a loan between Trump himself and an entity related to Trump Chicago Tower that later turned out not to exist. She also seeks five-year bans with the same conditions for Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, who took over the Trump Organization after their father became president in 2017.

Will Trump keep that up, now that he's been hit with a $83.3 million defamation judgment? A jury on Friday found that Trump had maliciously damaged Carroll's reputation in 2019 after she went public with her accusations. If both judgments stand, Trump would owe her a total of $88.3 million. THE FIRST TRIALCarroll sued Trump for defamation in 2019, saying his statements about her were false and damaged her reputation. The $88.3 million in judgments against Trump are actually less than what some of his supporters have faced in recent defamation cases.
