CNN —At least 26 people have been killed in an explosion in the town of Finote Selam in northwestern Ethiopia, amid heavy fighting between government forces and a local militia group. Tenaw told CNN that people reported hearing only one explosion, the cause of which is unclear. The Ethiopian government declared a six-month state of emergency in the Amhara region on August 4 after days of clashes. The United Nations “called on all sides to respect human rights and take steps to deescalate the situation,” noting that “previous states of emergency have been accompanied by violations of human rights” in a statement Friday. CNN —On Sunday, The New York Times published a front-page article titled “How Trump Benefits From an Indictment Effect.” As the Times wrote, “Donors sent checks. Trump’s trial over the 2020 election interference may start in early 2024 if special counsel Jack Smith has his way. And while Trump’s criminal charges yielded “an online gold mine,” according to The New York Times, it’s unclear how much this bump in “bigly” fundraising will continue. Given our polarized electorate, the 2024 presidential election will be close regardless of who the Republican nominee is. But with Trump facing 78 criminal charges — as well as possibly more to come — his sugar high in the GOP primary is going to come crashing down.

The DOJ announced Thursday that 2 US Navy sailors were arrested this week. The DOJ accused Navy service member Wenhen Zhao, 26, of giving military info to China for $14,866. The two sailors were charged with similar crimes, but they were charged in separate cases, and it wasn't clear Thursday if the two were connected or if they were courted or paid by the same Chinese intelligence officer. CNN —Two US Navy sailors have been indicted and arrested for allegedly sending sensitive US military information to Chinese intelligence officers. The other sailor who has been arrested, Petty Officer Wenheng Zhao, worked at Naval Base Ventura County in Port Hueneme in California. In return, Wei allegedly received thousands of dollars.
