Former President Donald J. Trump posted a video on Monday afternoon that features images of hypothetical newspaper articles celebrating a 2024 victory for him and referring to “the creation of a unified Reich” under the headline “What’s next for America?”The 30-second video, which Mr. Trump posted on his social media site, Truth Social, features several articles styled like newspapers from the early 1900s — and apparently recycling text from reports on World War I, including references to “German industrial strength” and “peace through strength.” One article in the video asserts that Mr. Trump would deport 15 million migrants in a second term, while text onscreen lists the start and end days of World War I. Another headline in the video suggests that Mr. Trump in a second term would reject “globalists,” using a term that has been widely adopted on the far right and that scholars say can be used as a signal of antisemitism. The Trump campaign said in a statement that the video had been posted by a staff member while Mr. Trump was in his criminal trial in Manhattan. The video was still up on his account late Monday night, and his campaign did not respond to a question about why it had not been taken down.

Another earnings report, another sell-off in extended trading for Palo Alto Networks . Palo Alto Networks Why we own it: We believe cybersecurity is a secular growth market as bad actors are relentless and companies simply cannot afford to not invest in defense. We believe Palo Alto Networks, in particular, is uniquely positioned to win due to its best-in-class tools and broad product portfolio that allows it to provide an all-encompassing "platform" solution to cybersecurity. This transaction was the largest in the history of Palo Alto Networks at nearly $150 million" of total contract value. Stock futures are near flat Monday night after the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite closed at an all-time high. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures lost just 27 points, while S&P 500 futures also sat near its flatline. Those moves come after a mixed day on Wall Street. But the blue-chip Dow slipped almost 200 points, or 0.5%. Monday's action follows a notable week on Wall Street amid renewed hopes about the state of inflation and monetary policy.

Shortly after the opening bell, we will be selling 25 shares of Palo Alto Networks at roughly $315.50. We talked Wednesday on our Morning Meeting about how Palo Alto Networks may have a positive setup into earnings Monday night , according to Morgan Stanley. We thought Morgan Stanley's call was pointing out because into earnings in February, Morgan Stanley said it was "sitting this quarter out." Its call proved prescient when Palo Alto shares fell almost 30% in a single session after missing estimates on billings and reducing its outlook. For example, Morgan Stanley says this deal benefits Palo Alto it several ways, helping it accelerate market share in security analytics.

CNN —The NFL is distancing itself from controversial comments by Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker during a recent commencement address. However, plenty of women (and Taylor Swift fans) have made their feelings plainly known. Harrison Butker of the Kansas City Chiefs speaks to the media ahead of Super Bowl LVIII on February 5, 2024, in Las Vegas. Conservative voices have praised Butker’s speech for being “100% correct” and for reflecting his self-professed deep Catholic faith. Meme stocks are having a moment, but the broader market is rallying as well. While GameStop's 74% rally got a lot of attention Monday ( "meme stocks are back!" ), the evidence indicates that a broad rally is dragging up a lot of stuff that hasn't been performing well this year. The S & P 600 Small Cap advance/decline is also near the highest levels since December, while the S & P Mid Cap 400 advance/decline line is at a new high. So when you hear the tired old refrain, "meme stocks are back," take a look at the rest of the market.

President Biden signed a bill into law on Monday night banning the import of uranium enriched in Russia. Russia controls nearly half the world’s enrichment capacity, and American electric utilities have been spending around $1 billion per year on the fuel to run their reactors. It provides waivers for utilities that would be forced to shut down nuclear reactors, allowing them to continue imports until 2028. Russia’s government has threatened in the past to unilaterally halt exports to the United States if a ban were put into effect. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, did not reiterate the threat but called the bill “unfair.”

The last story in her last book evoked her mother’s death. Does it seem reductive or limiting to derive a kind of artist’s statement from the title of that early book? Munro was hardly a doctrinaire feminist, but with implacable authority and command she demonstrated throughout her career that the lives of girls and women were as rich, as tumultuous, as dramatic and as important as the lives of men and boys. For a writer whose book titles gestured repeatedly at love (“The Progress of Love,” “The Love of a Good Woman,” “Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage”), her narratives recoiled from sentimentality. You got the feeling that, if the GPS ever offered her a shorter route, she would decline.

Her family announced the death, at a care home, to the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail. A representative of her publisher, Penguin Random House Canada, said Ms. Munro died in Port Hope, on Lake Ontario, east of Toronto, The Associated Press said. Ms. Munro was a member of the rare breed of writer, like Katherine Anne Porter and Raymond Carver, who made their reputations in the notoriously difficult literary arena of the short story, and did so with great success. Ms. Munro’s stories were widely considered to be without equal, a mixture of ordinary people and extraordinary themes. She portrayed small-town folks, often in rural southwestern Ontario, facing situations that made the fantastic seem an everyday occurrence.

Watching the red carpet at Monday night’s Met Gala, I couldn’t help but recall a prediction I’d heard from Emily Kirkpatrick, who writes the Substack newsletter “I <3 Mess.” She’d told me recently that, before the end of 2024, it’s possible that “someone is going to show up fully nude on a red carpet.”That didn’t happen at this year’s gala, but it got very close, as Doja Cat — who appeared earlier this year at the Grammy Awards in what was called “the most naked dress ever” — presented at the Met Gala in a long, clinging, soaking wet, transparent and entirely revealing white T-shirt by the label Vetements. Near-nudity is everywhere, at least on celebrities and the celebrity adjacent. Bianca Censori, Kanye West’s 29 year-old partner, wandered around Paris wearing a cropped jacket with sheer pantyhose and seemingly nothing on underneath, her modesty preserved only by the stockings’ single center seam. Julia Fox attended a fashion launch with three silver medallions covering her private parts under a long — and frequently parted — trench coat. This nearly nude look is not, as one might imagine, evidence of an increasingly oversexed culture, but rather of a culture that’s increasingly over sex.

CNN —Denver Nuggets star point guard Jamal Murray has come under criticism after he was spotted throwing a heat pack onto the court during the reigning champions’ 106-80 playoff loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. While on the bench toward the end of the second quarter, Murray could be seen throwing the heat pack while the Timberwolves were on offense. The object landed near the basket with several players in the vicinity of the heat pack. Murray’s behavior was described as “inexcusable” and “dangerous” by Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch following the conclusion of the game. The announcement by Hamas on Monday that it had accepted terms of a cease-fire added to the uncertainty that began over the weekend, when officials said that the armed group and Israel had reached an impasse after months of talks. As if to underscore that the fighting would continue, Hamas militants on Sunday launched rockets from Rafah, their last stronghold in Gaza, killing four Israeli soldiers. The terms Hamas had agreed to were not immediately clear, but a senior Israeli official quickly said that the terms were not those that Israel had agreed to. Hamas wants a permanent cease-fire. Israel wants a temporary truce.
