A fake campaign by environmental activists said Barbie-maker Mattel would go plastic-free by 2030. Outlets like People, The Washington Times , and Dow Jones Newswires reported that Mattel, the maker of Barbie and other toys like American Girl dolls and Hot Wheels, would go plastic-free by 2030. "With our plastic-free commitment, we denounce the empty promises of plastic recycling and take a bold step towards real ecological sustainability. By the end of the day, Yahoo News had the exclusive on the team behind the stunt : The Barbie Liberation Organization. When I wrote my college-admissions essay, I took a risk and wrote: "I want to be like Barbie." I thought about what I liked; I liked film. Barbie chose all of her dreams, and through pursuing film as a career, I could too. With help from Barbie, I consistently chose it all, and through film, I could bring my ballerina-astronaut dreams to life. Now, two years later, I'm entering my sophomore year of studying film and television production at Chapman University, one of the world's top film schools.

Sequoia picks the right moment to ditch deadwood

The $85 billion venture firm downsized the commitments it expects its investors to make to vehicles targeting cryptocurrency and its own peers, the Wall Street Journal reported. With those investors, known as limited partners, now less pressed to flee private markets, it’s a smart time for Sequoia to help them shift into more promising opportunities. As last year's downturn tanked their public investments, LPs found themselves relatively overinvested in still-highly-valued private markets, forcing them to pull back from the likes of venture funds. As public markets recover – the S&P 500 Index (.SPX) is up almost 20% this year – this “denominator effect” is fading, a Capstone Partners survey suggests. And with LPs once again keen on private markets, they may be more likely to stick around, despite Sequoia’s self-admitted mistakes on investments like now-bankrupt FTX.

By marketing Barbie products to adults, large retailers may be able to get them to buy similar products for kids. With Barbie products that appeal to grown-ups, marketers are “getting that interactivity between adults and children, that bonding,” which can also be used as a selling point. For Your Broken Heart, Consider a Breakup Budget

For a month after a breakup in early June, I wavered between empowered mania and “Wuthering Heights” anguish. If I’d had access to moors I would have roamed them nightly à la the book’s brutish, tormented hero, Heathcliff, wild-haired and sporting a messy cravat, but I was in Austin, Texas, where there is nary a moor and it’s too hot for roaming. After this most recent split, however, I left the sphere of retail therapy and waltzed on the plane of shopping addiction. Instead, I bought a ticket to Mexico to join my sister at a resort I couldn’t afford. I spent $165 on a deep-tissue massage and $130 on an annual subscription to MasterClass.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index (.IXIC) has rallied this year, helped by outsized gains in rate-sensitive megacap growth companies and hopes for an end to the U.S. Federal Reserve's tightening cycle. The S&P composite 1500 passenger airlines sub index (.SPCOMAIR) dropped 3.45%, bogged down by a 9.7% fall in Alaska Air (ALK.N) after the airline's annual revenue growth outlook missed expectations. New York CNN —It’s easy to watch Lionel Messi play in the United States, but dressing like him is a bit more difficult. Fans hoping to purchase an authentic Inter Miami jersey featuring its newest star’s name will have to wait until mid-October (notably, that’s when the Major League Soccer season ends). Shortly after Messi announced his intention of coming to the US in June, online retailer Soccer.com said that it sold six months’ worth of generic Inter Miami jerseys in one day, and they’re still sold out. Messi maniaMessi’s first appearance with Inter Miami ended with him scoring the game-winning goal in extra time. His signing is also expected to be a boon for Apple’s nascent streaming package, MLS Season Pass.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File PhotoJuly 24 (Reuters) - Meme stocks have surged in the last few weeks as retail investors shun pricier stocks for cheaper speculative names, but some experts worry that this could choke the current rally in broader markets. At a time when the wider rally has made some stocks, especially in the tech space, too expensive, the return of meme stocks is offering retail investors a more affordable option to participate in 2023's market rebound and pocket big returns. Roundhill's Meme index (.MEME) hit a one-year high last week and was last up 60% for 2023 so far, dwarfing gains of more than 18% recorded by the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX). Retail investors poured in $1.27 billion per day on average into U.S. equities in July, closing in on the all-time record of $1.5 billion a day in March, Vanda Research said. The meme index consists of 25 equal-weighted U.S.-listed stocks with a combination of elevated social media activity and high short interest.

Remember the GameStop mania of 2021, fueled as it was by forcing short sellers to cover their bets? However, when the stock jumps instead, it forces short sellers to buy back shares in order to limit their losses. The stock market is in the middle of a strong rally as inflation pressures ease and the Fed nears the end of its rate-hiking campaign. GameStop was once the most shorted stock in the market, with short interest as a percentage of shares available for trading exceeding 100%. Carvana , Novavax, Lucid Group and Beyond Meat were also heavily targeted by short sellers.

A weapons engineer turned doll maker is the unexpected link to "Barbenheimer," the affectionately dubbed duo from Warner Bros.′ "Barbie" and Universal's "Oppenheimer." Before designing the world's most famous doll, Jack Ryan worked for aerospace giant Raytheon and helped create the weapons that formed the backbone of America's missile defense. David Rosenberg warned the buzz around stocks today is similar to the mania before past crashes. The economist noted that American consumers are running short of cash and struggling to borrow more. The veteran economist and Rosenberg Research president also rang the alarm on the US economy in a research note on Wednesday. "The balloon does have a lot of hot air in it," Rosenberg noted, suggesting it was hard to say when speculation and emotion would cease trumping fundamentals and rational thought. That has raised borrowing costs for consumers and businesses, and wreaked havoc on debt-fueled industries such as commercial real estate.

Shares of Palantir have surged 181% this year as investors bet on its potential in the booming artificial intelligence race. The company, founded in 2003, is already making strides in AI, even lending its tools to hospitals . In its latest earnings release in early May, CEO Alex Karp called demand for Palantir's AI platform, which allows commercial and government sectors to use LLMs with their own private data, "without precedent." While some analysts see promise in Palantir's AI capabilities, many remain cautious on the immediate profit contribution of the technology and view the stock as ripe for a pullback. In a note to clients in May, Morgan Stanley's Keith Weiss noted that the rally in Palantir shares and premium valuation creates an unfavorable near-term risk-reward.
